Poker Solitare v1.2 for Windows
Copyright (c)1994 Derek Jones

NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE THE FILE VBRUN200.DLL IN YOUR
WINDOWS SYSTEM DIRECTORY. I DID NOT INCLUDE IT
IN THE ZIPFILE TO KEEP THE SIZE SMALL AND THE
UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD TIME SHORT. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE
THIS FILE ALREADY, YOU MAY OBTAIN IT BY SENDING
A FLOPPY DISK (3 1/2 OR 5 1/4) TO THE ADDRESS
AT THE END OF THIS FILE, ALONG WITH YOUR ADDRESS
AND 50 CENTS TO COVER MAILING COSTS. THIS FILE
IS ALSO LIKELY TO BE FOUND ON VARIOUS BBS's AS
WELL.

If you have already installed this game, skip down
to Playing The Game.

To install Poker Solitare Shareware Version 1.2 for
Windows, copy all of the files that you unzipped into one
directory, ideally a blank floppy disk.

Then in Windows, select File/Run and in the text box
type:

A:SETUP
or
B:SETUP

Replacing the drive letters above with the appropriate drive
letter\directory.

The setup program will then kick in and have you ready to go.
Don't forget to read the other two files included with this
game, REG_INFO.DOC and the order form, ORDER.DOC.

----Playing The Game

Poker Solitare is a simple game to play, like most solitare
games, but is difficult to master.

The cards are first shuffled (there is no computer cheating
in this game.)

Then what basically happens is that you "turn up" the first
21 cards. The first card turned up is shown above the card
that you play next. This card is considered to be in EACH
hand to make five cards in each hand. You place the cards
as they turn up in an array four cards wide and four cards
deep. Each card may be placed anywhere in this array that
does not already have a card in it. Once a card is placed
it may not be moved.

The object is to score as high a count as possible in the ten
Poker hands formed by the 4 rows, 4 columns, and the 2
diagonals all at the same time.

Scoring-- The two scoring systems below are used in this

game. The default is English because it is based on how
hard it is to form these hands in this particular game. The
American system follows the ranking of hands in the game of
poker, and as you can see is more generous.

Hand English American
--------------------------------------------------------
Straight Flush 30 75
Four of a Kind 16 50
Full House 10 25
Flush 5 20
Straight 12 15
Three of a Kind 6 10
Two Pair 3 5
One Pair 1 2
No Hand -2 -4

I also apologize that the shareware version does not score
a Royal Flush as more, and that a low straight (A,2,3,4,5)
does not count. This is remedied in the commercial
version.
Once you start to play the game, you will catch on quickly.
Hopefully it isn't too addicting, or I will have to include
a boss key in my next version. Hey...that's a thought!

Oh, and there are a few common questions asked by my
beta testers..

---Sometimes the cards change do wierd things and they
have funny colors. What's wrong?

Poker Solitare was written in 16 colors to have a
larger marketing audience. If you are
experiencing this, it is most likely because you
are in 256 colors and either your computer or
video card isn't fast enough to process the
refreshing of the cards on the screen. If it
becomes a problem, just switch down to 16 colors.

---What is the purpose of the "Stop Game" button?

The Stop Game button allows you to quit the current
game and change options. I put this in the program
to allow you to change the type of scoring.
Yes, it does completely wipe your current game,
but when you change scoring methods, it has to to
keep it fair!

---How can I keep my high scores?

This is an option only offered in the registered
version of Poker Solitare.

---My sound option in the Options menu is always dim, but
I have a sound card. How come I can't have sounds?

Again, the sounds are only offered in the commercial
version. They do add to the game, I might add.

Registration information can be found in REG_INFO.DOC and
the order form is ORDER.DOC

This is a shareware program, not freeware. It is not a free
game. Shareware is merely a type of marketing, a "try before
you buy" with the best guarantee. If you like the product,
you register and get a souped-up commercial version. If you
don't, (here's your money back guarantee) you simply delete
the game from your hard drive and owe nothing.

If you continue to use this game for over a trial period of
two weeks, you must register. The registration fee is very
modest ($10.95), and you get so many benefits, it is all
worth it. Please support the shareware concept and register.
Just print the ORDER.DOC file, complete it, and mail it in.
Most orders are processed withing 24 hours.
