Printer Notes
=================================================

QMS IS X320T (Imageserver X320T)
--------------------------------
- When using the QMS Windows PostScript Printer Driver, the default language
for this printer should be set to "UltraScript".
- When selecting either A3 or B4 paper sizes from the driver, the printer
will use the default size "letter". The driver issues the UltraScript
commands "a3tray" and b4tray" to select these paper sizes. These commands
are not supported on version 6.0T Rev.A of the printer and it defaults to
letter paper size. To get either A3 or B4 paper sizes it is necessary to
spool the UltraScript output and change the commands "a3tray" and "b4tray"
to "a3" and "b4" respectively.
- When the driver is used to select specific paper tray and a specific paper
size and the specified tray does not, in fact, contain the specified paper
size, the printer's console will display "Engine Not Ready; Waiting For
Paper Size...". To avoid this situation select the "Match Papersize"
option as the paper source in the driver or insure the desired paper size
is in the desired paper tray.

Software Notes
=================================================

Ventura Publisher
--------------------
The driver name needs to be the same as the released Microsoft PSCRIPT.DRV
driver. Ventura Publisher determines whether the printer is a PostScript
device by looking at the name. Therefore, you will only be able to use
either the QMS or the Microsoft driver.

Micrografx Designer
----------------------
Certain Micrografx Designer files do not print properly with both the QMS
PostScript driver and the Microsoft PostScript driver. If you encounter
problems, use the Micrografx driver supplied with Designer.

Selecting Paper Source
=================================================

When selecting your paper source, also take into consideration tray
chaining, selecting by paper size, and selecting by tray.

Tray Chaining
----------------------
Tray chaining, when enabled (on), allows the printer to automatically switch
paper trays when the current tray runs out of paper. When chaining is enabled,
the printer assumes that any tray is an acceptable substitute for the other
trays.

Tray chaining must be disabled (off) to select a particular paper tray. The
printer ignores paper tray selection commands when tray chaining is enabled.

Disable tray chaining from the printer front panel.

Selecting by Size
-----------------------
The current paper source may be set to match the selected paper size. To use
an available paper size, in the Printer Setup dialog box, select Match
Papersize from the Paper Source list. Next, select the desired size from the
Paper Size list. This sets the printer to use paper from any tray containing
this paper size.

Selecting by Tray
-----------------------
The current paper source may be set to any available paper tray. To select
a particular tray, in the Printer Setup dialog box, select the desired paper
tray from the Paper Source list (do not select Match Papersize). Next,
select the paper size contained in the selected tray from the Paper Size
list. This sets the printer to use paper from the selected tray.

Printing TrueType Fonts
=================================================

For each TrueType font you are using, you may choose to substitute a
printer font for the TrueType font or download the TrueType font to the
printer as a Type 1 or Type 3 soft font.

Substituting a printer font for a TrueType font is appropriate for TrueType
fonts like Courier New which is almost identical to the Courier printer font.
Font substitution generally provides faster printing than font downloading.

TrueType fonts can be downloaded to the printer as Type 1 or Type 3 soft
fonts. Type 1 fonts are outline fonts which require less data than Type 3
bitmap fonts. Type 1 fonts generally print faster than Type 3 fonts.

To determine how TrueType fonts are printed follow these steps:

1) Click Options in the Printer Setup dialog box.

2) Click Advanced in the Options dialog box.

3) In the Advanced Options dialog box, remove the check from the Use
Printer Fonts for all TrueType Fonts box.

4) Check the Use Substitution Table box.

5) Select Adobe Type 1 from the Send to Printer As list to use outline
fonts during downloading or select Bitmap (Type 3) to use bitmaps.

6) Click on Edit Substitution Table.

7) For each TrueType font in the For TrueType Font list, click on the
TrueType font and then click on the printer font to be substituted
in the Use Printer Font list.

If you prefer to download the selected TrueType font, click
Download as SoftFont in the Use Printer Font list.

8) Click on OK twice to return to the Printer Setup dialog box.

WPD Files
=================================================
The Windows driver disk contains WPD (Windows Printer Description) files for
QMS printers and other PostScript printers. Most available PostScript drivers
for Windows were based on the original Microsoft driver which provided the
capability to add support for additional printers by installing WPD files.
The QMS WPD files work with most Windows 3.0 and 3.1 PostScript drivers.

WPD files for QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\QMS subdirectory so
that support for a QMS printer can be added to most Windows PostScript
drivers. This might be helpful if you are required to use some other driver
instead of the QMS driver which already supports all QMS printers.

WPD files for non-QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\OTHERS subdirectory
so that support for a non-QMS printer can be added to the QMS driver which
only supports QMS printers. This might be helpful if you need to print to
both a QMS and non-QMS printer.

View or print the README.TXT file in the \WPDS\QMS or \WPDS\OTHERS
subdirectory for complete WPD installation and removal instructions.

WPD Files for Other PostScript Printers

This disk contains WPD files for some other PostScript printers. These files
will allow you to add a particular printer to the list of supported
printers in the QMS Windows 3.x PostScript driver.

NOTE:
The QMS PostScript driver for Windows 3.x already supports all QMS
printers. It is available from the QMS Bulletin Board at (205) 633-3632
or in the QMS section of the DTPVEN forum on Compuserve. Unless you have
a particular reason for keeping your current driver and adding printers,
it is probably better to just use the QMS driver.

To add printers using WPD files follow these steps:

1) In Windows, at the Program Manager dialog box, double click on the Control
Panel icon.

2) In the Control Panel dialog box, double click on the Printers icon.

3) Click on your PostScript driver entry in the Installed Printers list and
then click on Configure (for Windows 3.1 click on Setup and proceed to
Step #5).

4) In the Configure dialog box, click on Setup.

5) In the Setup dialog box, click on Add Printer.

6) You will be prompted to insert a disk into drive A. If you are using drive
A, insert the disk containing the WPD files into that drive. If you are
using another drive, type in the appropriate drive name and insert the disk
there. Add the path name "\WPDS\OTHERS". (ex. b:\wpds\others). Click on OK.

7) Click on the desired printer and Click on Add to install the printer.

You may add up to 5 external printers to most drivers. See the Removing
External Printers section of this document if you need to remove a printer
to make room for others.

8) Click on Done.

9) Select the printer you just added in the Printer list and set the
desired paper source and size.

10) Click on OK through all subsequent screens to exit. Close the Control
Panel dialog box and exit Windows to insure that your changes take effect.

The printer has been added to the list of printers supported by your
driver as an external printer.

Removing External Printers
-----------------------------------

The QMS Windows 3.x PostScript driver only allows you to add up to 5 external
printers with WPD files. If you have already added 5 external printers and
need to install a different printer, you must remove a previously installed
external printer.

Follow these steps to remove an external printer:

1) Make a backup copy of the WIN.INI file in your windows directory.
Edit the WIN.INI file with an ASCII text editor.

2) Search for a [PSCRIPT] entry containing a list of external printers with
the following format.

[PSCRIPT]
External Printers=5
printer1=401917US
printer2=401939US
printer3=9000_493
printer4=AGFAP400
printer5=APPLE230

3) Remove individual printers by deleting "printer?=??????" lines. Renumber
the "printer?=??????" entries so that they are consecutive.

4) Change the number of printers indicated in the "External Printers=?" entry.
The value in this entry must equal the number of "printer?=?????" entries.

EXAMPLE: Removing the Agfa Compugraphic 400PS printer entry.

BEFORE:

[PSCRIPT]
External Printers=5
printer1=401917US
printer2=401939US
printer3=9000_493
printer4=AGFAP400
printer5=APPLE230

AFTER:

[PSCRIPT]
External Printers=4
printer1=401917US
printer2=401939US
printer3=9000_493
printer4=APPLE230
