Features of PKFIND
------------------

o PKFIND File Finder Plus works like some other "whereis" type
programs, except with an important Plus. The Plus is that PKFIND
will not only search all the directories on your diskette or hard
disk like other "whereis" programs, but PKFIND will search
through archive files too. Once PKFIND finds the desired file,
PKFIND can automatically change to the subdirectory where the
file was found! PKFIND will allow you to find any file, archived
or not, simply and easily.

o PKFIND will run on any MS-DOS machine running MS-DOS version 2.0
or above, and requires only 32K of free memory to run.

o PKFIND is not copy protected.



Using PKFIND
------------

Recursively searches subdirectories + archives for specified files.

Usage: PKFIND [options] [d:path\] file [file...]

Options are:

-b - Brief listing.
-d - List directory names too.
-a - Search only archive files.
-n - Do not search archive files.
-c - Continuous listing, no query after each file.

d:path\ - Drive and/or path to start search. The default
is the root directory of the current drive. If
just a drive letter is given, the search will
start at the root directory of that drive. A
period "." can be used to denote the current
directory.

file [file...] - List of one or more files to search for. The
wildcards * and ? can be used as part of the
filename(s). If no extension is specified, then
".*" will be assumed.

The parameters to PKFIND can be supplied in any order, and are not
case sensitive. The options can be preceded by either the "-" or
"/" (DOS switch char) characters. Multiple options can be specified
together or seperately, in any order. For example, all the
following syntax are equivalent:

pkfind /dc d: startrek
pkfind d: -c startrek -d
pkfind startrek /cd d:

The files STARTREK.ARC, STARTREK.EXE, STARTREK.PIC, STARTREK.BAS
and STARTREK.DUM were found. The last four files are indented
and preceded by a * indicating that they were found in an archive
file. The name of the archive file is listed directly before the
file. For example, the file STARTREK.EXE is in the archive
STARTREK.ARC. Both the files STARTREK.BAS and STARTREK.DUM are in
the archive SIG0017.ARC.

Explanation of options
----------------------

-c After finding a matching file, PKFIND will display a
"More (ynj)?" prompt. Using the -c (continous listing)
option will suppress the "More (ynj)?" prompt and cause
PKFIND to list all matching files found without stopping.
PKFIND can be aborted at any time by pressing Ctrl C or
Ctrl Break. If DOS I/O redirection is used, this option
will default on.

Entering "y" in response to the "More (ynj)?" prompt will
cause PKFIND to search for the next matching file.
Entering "n" will end PKFIND. Entering "j" will cause
PKFIND to Jump to the drive and subdirectory where the file
was found.

-b When PKFIND finds a file it will display the file's name,
size, date, and time. If the -b (brief) option is used
only the file's name will be displayed.

-d Usually, PKFIND only searches for files. Using the -d
(directory) option will cause PKFIND to also display
any matching directory names as well.

-a The -a (archive only) option will force PKFIND to only
search archive files for the specified file. Files that
are not in an archive will not be found. If you know
that the desired file is in an archive, using this option
can yield better searching performance.

-n The -n (no archives) option is the opposite of the -a
option. Only normal files will be searched for. Files
within an archive will not be found. If you know that
the desired file is not in an archive, using this option
can yield better searching performance.

PKFIND messages
---------------

Error in archive: archive-name

There is an error in the displayed archive file. Searching of
the archive can not proceed. PKFIND will skip over this file.

PKFIND: Can't mix A and D options

PKFIND: Can't mix A and N options

The -a (archive only) option can not be mixed with either
the -d (directory) or -n (no archives) options.



PKFIND revision history

Since most of the time once a file was found, one would want to
change to the subdirectory where the file was located, this
function was added to PKFIND. The "j" (Jump to directory) response
was added to the "More ?" prompt to make PKFIND automatically
change to the drive and subdirectory where the file was found.

The DOS switch character is now supported as a valid option
separator.

Both '/' and '\' characters are now allowed in pathnames.

Wildcard file matching using '?' in the extension has been modified
to work exactly like DOS directory wildcard matching.
