Notes on SHERIFF.ARC: 26 March 1987
This is an excellent multi-user security system. The documentation,
however, has some problems. It took me days to figure out how to enter
software into the system. I finally made it!!! Here is how you do it.
Do all your configurations on a floppy and the place it on your hard disk.
Simply unarc the files unto a floppy then:
SHERIFF [ENTER]
SYSADM {AT THE NAME PROMPT} [ENTER]
START {AT THE PASSWORD PROMPT} [ENTER]
--- SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR MENU ---
F8 {TO ADD A USER---"YOU"}
SYSADM {AT THE NAME PROMPT} [ENTER]
"ANY PASSWORD YOU WANT" [ENTER]
--- SOFTWARE ENTRY MENU ---
ADD THE NAMES OF THE SOFTWARE [RETURN]
A SECOND [RETURN] WHEN DONE
--- BACK TO SYSTEM ADM. MENU --
F9 {TO ADD SOFTWARE}
FOLLOW PROMPTS
You will become real frustrated if you try to install software while on hard
disk. The system will usually not take the first piece of software and will
definitely lock up on the second. We have had no problems while installing
on the floppy.
One last item: The manual states that there should be a SHERIFF.SYS file
with the package. The author has withheld that file in the PD version.
This ARC does contain the SYS file for our Registered Users. This file should
be used only by experienced user
because it prevents bat file aborts and warm boots. Forget what your doing
and you really lock yourself out of the system! If you get your hands on
the SHERIFF.SYS file, keep it out of your config file until your sure you
have your name and password correct...
Also, remember, your name should go in first as SYSADM. The SYSADM name
lets you into the administrator section.
We have been looking for some time for a good multi-user security system. I
would appreciate hearing from anyone that comes across any other systems
such as SHERIFF.
