W A R N I N G: Do NOT rename DISKFLAG.EXE! The Flag Values you select for
each disk are stored WITHIN THE PROGRAM. If the program file
is renamed, then it cannot "find" itself, and will give you
an error message.

DESCRIPTION:

This version of DISKFLAG, (3.1) incorporates a number of new features. For
one thing, it uses no external files of any kind. The Flag Value for each
Disk Drive selected is stored WITHIN THE PROGRAM ITSELF! I use binary read
and write to update the Flag Values for up to TEN drives in a pre-allocated
buffer area. (Yes, you read that right, up to 10 drives, hard OR floppy!)
Because DISKFLAG does not use any external files, it can be placed in any
directory on your boot drive, so long as there is a path to that directory.
This version also featurs LOTUS style pop-down menuing.

DISKFLAG is now in COLOR! The program will recognize and adjust to most
color adapters (CGA, EGA, VGA, etc.). If you have a monochrome adapter, or
a monochrome display on a color adapter, DISKFLAG will also know that, and
output its screens in black and white. If you have an adapter/display that
is unknown to DISKFLAG, and you get strange results on your screen, merely
add /C (for color), or /M )for Monochrome) to the command line.

DISKFLAG is VERY FAST! When it runs, if no Drives are flagged, it should
take only a second to complete. All memory used to run DISKFLAG is fully
recoverable for use by other programs.

DISKFLAG is a stand-alone program that is used to automatically compare the
percentage of used space on a hard disk to a percentage value that can be
changed by the user. When the program runs, it does a DOS system call for
each drive selected, and reads the disk size information. It compares that
to a user-selected Flag Value (percentage used). If the percentage of disk
space used is LESS THAN, or EQUAL TO the user-defined percentage, the
program automatically terminates and no further action is taken. If the
percentage of disk space used is MORE THAN the user-defined percentage,
the program presents a warning screen with the pertinent information
presented in an easy-to-read format with a message to "Please backup unused
files and remove them from the disk now."

The DISKFLAG program can be installed in any directory of your hard disk.
It should be called automatically by AUTOEXEC.BAT at system boot (IPL)
time. Your system boots at power-on time, and whenever you press the combi-
nation of ALT, CONTROL, and DEL keys.

INSTALLATION:

1. Insert the supplied DISKFLAG diskette into your system's A drive.

2. Using the DOS copy command, copy DISKFLAG.EXE to any directory on your
hard disk.

3. Then, using EDLIN or your favorite editor, add the statement
DISKFLAG to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
IN ORDER TO BE EFFECTIVE, DISKFLAG MUST RUN BEFORE ANY OTHER PROGRAMS.

4. Upon installation, all Disk Drives and Flag Values are stored as nulls.
You MUST run the program DISKFLAG one time, and follow the instructions
on the screen to set the initial Flag Values. After this, DISKFLAG will
run automatically at boot time.

OPERATION:

1. When DISKFLAG runs, (should be from AUTOEXEC.BAT), if no disk is flagged
as having more space used than its Flag Value, the screen will remain
unchanged. (If you want to check your Flag Values, see No. 2 below.). If
any disks' used space exceeds the Flag Value, the warning message will
appear and the computer's alarm will sound. After noting the information
on the screen, pressing any key will end the DISKFLAG program.

2. Once DISKFLAG is installed, you can check the status of your disks' used
space versus your Flag Values at anytime by entering DISKFLAG /S

. . . means PRESS THE ENTER KEY. Do NOT type in !

3. DISKFLAG can monitor up to ten (10) disk drives, including floppies. If
you want to check a floppy diskette, make sure you have the proper one
in the proper drive prior to executing DISKFLAG. DISKFLAG cannot tell if
it is reading the right diskette, only the right drive.

4. To bypass the automatic color/monochrome selection, just add /C or /M to
the command line. /C or /M may be used alone, or in any combination with
/S (see 2 above), or /U (see 1 below).
EXAMPLES:

DISKFLAG
DISKFLAG /M
DISKFLAG /M /S
DISKFLAG /S /M

CHANGING USER-DEFINED FLAG VALUE(S):

1. Run the program DISKFLAG any time from your C> prompt using the /U Parm.
In other words, type in DISKFLAG /U . The pull-down menus are
self-explanatory.

OTHER INFORMATION:

DISKFLAG is NOT a memory-resident (TSR) program. After DISKFLAG runs, it is
cleared from memory. DISKFLAG should run on all IBM and IBM-compatible
microcomputers.

DISKFLAG does not create any files. It updates the user's Flag Value(s)
by writing to a special buffer area in the program file (DISKFLAG.EXE). For
this reason, it is important NOT to rename DISKFLAG.EXE. The program looks
for its own name, and if it cannot be found, an error message will appear
giving instructions on how to continue.

DISKFLAG was written and compiled in MICROSOFT QuickBASIC Ver 4.5. It also
uses CRESCENT SOFTWARE's great QuickPak Professional programming tools.

***************************************************************************

DISKFLAG is NOT a free program! If you use DISKFLAG, and agree that it can
increase productivity by eliminating the worry of "How Much Disk Space
Do I Have Left?", then please become a registered user. Registered users
are supported if any bugs should appear in the program, and they will be
notified of all future upgrades.

REGISTERED USERS WILL ALSO RECEIVE THE QUICKBASIC SOURCE CODE FOR DISKFLAG!
