PW BOOT GUARD 2.01

Copyright (C) 1992 Lonnie L. Logue

-- THE FLOPPY BOOT PREVENTATIVE --

FEATURES

1. Disables access to the hard drive if the computer was booted
from a floppy diskette, thereby preventing the bypass of
config.sys or autoexec.bat password programs.

INSTALLATION

Syntax: PWBG [switch]

Switch: /i = install
/r = remove

*** WARNING ***

Please run this program only on a bootable floppy disk to
guarantee complete recovery on non-compatible systems.

After installation, write protect and store the floppy in a safe
place. It contains the file PWBG.DAT which is NEEDED to remove
PWBG 2.01. Make backup copies of this file and store in a safe
place. You can even ZIP them up if you like.

COMPATIBLES

PW Boot Guard 2.01 has been tested on IBM Compatibles under the
following conditions:

OPERATING SYSTEMS: a. MS-DOS 3.3
b. MS-DOS 4.01
c. MS-DOS 5.0
d. DR DOS 6.0

NOTE: This product is not compatible with Microsoft Windows
running in 32 bit disk access mode.

ERROR MESSAGES

1. REQUIRES DOS VERSION 2.0 OR ABOVE

DOS version 2.0 or above is required for the operation
of this program.

2. PROGRAM MUST BE USED FROM DRIVE A:

In order to guarantee complete recovery from
installations on non-compatible systems, it is necessary
for this program to run from a bootable floppy disk in
drive A.

3. PW BOOT GUARD ALREADY INSTALLED

PW Boot Guard is already installed. Use the /r switch
to remove.

4. PW BOOT GUARD NOT INSTALLED

PW Boot Guard is not installed. Use the /i switch
to install.

NOTE: You may receive this message if PWBG is receiving
interference from a software disk cache. Make sure you
boot from a system floppy before attempting removal.

If PWBG 2.01 has been relocated or damaged by a boot
sector virus you may also receive this message. If you
believe this to be the case, boot from the write
protected system diskette on which you stored PWBG.DAT
and use the hidden /e emergency removal switch by
typing: PWBG /e This will restore your Master Boot
Record and Partition Table using the data contained in
the PWBG.DAT file.

5. UNABLE TO LOCATE PWBG.DAT

PW Boot Guard is unable to locate the file PWBG.DAT.
Be sure this file, and the program file PWBG.EXE are
located on a bootable floppy diskette in drive A: before
trying to remove PW Boot Guard.

6. PWBG.DAT SERIAL NUMBER MISMATCH

The file PWBG.DAT has a different serial number than
that assigned during the most recent installation of
PWBG 2.01. It may be that you keep several PWBG.DAT
files stored in various places and they just got mixed
up.

The unique serial number safeguards against restoring
the PWBG.DAT file of another computer, whose Master Boot
Record and Partition Table may be entirely different
than yours, onto your computer which may result in the
inability to access the hard drive or the loss of data.
This may be corrected by restoring immediately with the
correct PWBG.DAT file.

NOTE: There is also the chance that the PWBG 2.01 Master Boot
Record has been damaged by a virus or other program and
no longer contains a correct serial number. If you
believe this to be the case, you may use the hidden /e
switch to force emergency removal after first booting
from the write protected system diskette on which you
stored the PWBG.DAT file. If you have a boot sector
virus, booting from a floppy will make sure that the
virus is unable to setup any protection that might
prevent it's removal. It will also disable PWBG 2.01's
own write protection mechanism which may also prevent
PWBG 2.01 from overwriting the virus.

7. PWBG.DAT IS CORRUPT

The CRC integrity check on PWBG.DAT has failed. This
file has been corrupted and is unsuitable for use in the
removal process. Use another copy of PWBG.DAT.

PWBG.DAT is NEEDED for removal of PWBG 2.01, therefore
make backup copies of PWBG.DAT and store in a safe
place. You can even ZIP them up if you like.

NOTE: You will also get this message by trying to use versions
of PWBG.DAT files prior to 2.0 as they used a different
form of error checking. To view the version of the
PWBG.DAT file, at the DOS prompt type: TYPE PWBG.DAT and
press Enter. (versions 2.0 - 2.01 display PWBG 2.0)

8. FIXED DISK NOT PRESENT OR INVALID

There is no fixed disk on this system, or it is
invalid.

9. INVALID PARTITION TABLE

PWBG 2.01 will only install onto systems that have a
standard 512 byte Master Boot Record which contains a
valid, bootable Partition Table.

If you receive this error message, check to make sure
that you don't have a program similar to PWBG 2.01
already installed. Also, boot from a write protected
system diskette and scan the C: drive for boot sector
viruses using a good virus scanner (i.e. Norton's Anti
Virus, SCAN, FPROT etc.) as a virus may have altered the
Partition Table, or may have overwritten or relocated
PWBG 2.01 if you already had it installed.

10. READ SECTOR FAIL

PWBG 2.01 encountered a disk sector error while
attempting to read the Master Boot Record. This may be
a sign of hard drive trouble. Boot from a system
diskette and try again. If you have no trouble this
time, it may be that a virus or other program is
intercepting the sector reads.

11. WRITE SECTOR FAIL

PWBG 2.01 encountered a disk sector error while
attempting to write the Master Boot Record. This may be
a sign of hard drive trouble. It may also mean that a
program (ie. PWMBR or maybe even a virus) has write
protected your Master Boot Record.

If you have the program PWMBR installed, you must first
remove it before installing PWBG 2.01. If you don't
have PWMBR installed, boot from a write protected system
diskette and scan your hard drive for a boot sector
virus.

NOTE: PWMBR is another program I've written. It is a small
and efficient MBR password program which disables floppy
diskette boots entirely.

UPDATES

1.0 ......... Initial release of this program.
Dated 6-4-92 1:00:00am

1.1 ......... Bugfix - Found to be non-compatible with SCSI
hard drives. Version 1.0 saved a hidden control
file to the root directory of drive C. The
program needed to access this file to remove
itself. When the SCSI hard drive would not boot
it became impossible for the user to access the
hard drive without reformating or contacting me.
Version 1.1 solves this problem nicely by
restricting it's operation to drive A. It saves
a non-hidden encrypted control file. This file
is needed for removal, please make backups and
store in a safe place.
Dated 6-21-92 1:10:00am

1.2 ......... Bugfix - If the disk in drive A were full
(unlikely, but possible), the program would
continue installation even though the control
file was not properly saved. This version
corrects the problem. Tightened code, modified
control file signature to prevent the reading of
previous versions control files.
Dated 7-4-92 1:20:00am

2.0 ......... Now compatible with SCSI drives as Partition
Table is no longer scrambled. Norton's Disk
Doctor will no longer recognize a defect in the
Partition Table. Added a /e trapdoor switch so
that PWBG 2.0 will use any valid version 2.0 or
higher PWBG.DAT file to restore the Master Boot
Record and Partition Table even if the PWBG.DAT
serial number doesn't match as might be the case
if the Master Boot Record has been damaged by a
virus or other program.
Dated 12-12-92 2:00:00am

2.01 ........ Bugfix - corrected a problem PWBG20 had with
extended partitions.
Dated 12-27-92 2:01:00am
