How to Make an Outrageously Long Null Modem Cable With Phone Cable

Recently I was trying to connect serially to another computer,
and needed a way to go over 100 feet, and also not have a cable as thick
as a tree trunk. One of my co-workers had a sketch of how to accomplish
what I needed to do with regular phone line and some connectors which I
easily obtained for $5.00 each at my local electronics store. The sketch
my co-worker had was written in the back of a book, and what I am trying to
do is to preserve the plan so that others may benefit from it, and I will be
able to find it again.

This is how to make an outrageously long null modem cable:

You will need the following materials...
o 2 rj11 to 25pin female or 2 rj11 to 9pin female or one
rj11 to 25pin female and one rj11 to 9pin female
serial kits. (Whatever fits the back of your serial
port) serial kits.
o A long 4 wire phone cable.
(As long as your installation needs)

o 2 rj11 ends for 4 or 6 wire cable
(the 6 wire ends will work on 4 wire cable, but
you just have to be carefull when you center it
before crimping it).

o A rj11 end stripping and crimping tool.
(Most expensive thing, like $20.00).


Steps to build cable:

1. Make rj11 cable. (Colors opposite at each end)
(One end is Black, Red, Green, Yellow, and other is
Yellow, Green, Black and Red).

2. Wire 1st kit from template 1. (25 pin or 9 pin)

3. Wire 2nd kit from template 2. (25 pin or 9 pin)

4. Snap the connectors to the rj11 cable and plug the ends in.


** Massively important note, be sure to build one kit from one of the
** Template ones and one kit from one of the Template twos.
** Otherwise it won't work!!

Template 1 for 25 pin Connectors:

Jumper 4 and 5 together
