INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Master Station Log. This program emulates
DD FORM 1753. Basicly it works like a typewriter with
a few characteristics of a computer. In this manual, you
will be given instuctions on the use of this program.

USE OF MASTER STATION LOG

Use of this program on a computer owned or operated by
the United States government is permitted. This program
was written entirely on a government owned computer and
because of that fact, is itself government owned property.
Also I, the author, of this program give all rights of law
and copywrite to the U.S. government. Some military
departments require special authorization before running
any software. Please check local requirements before
using.

2

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for this program are simple. First,
you need an IBM compatable computer. Second, you need a
EPSON compatable printer. Other printers will work if
they use IBM EXTENDED CHARACTER SET. Either a hard disk
or floppy disk drive is also required.

TECHNICAL NOTES

There are 12 program files in Master Station Log.
MSL.EXE
MSL.TXT
MSL.TAN
MSL.MOD
MSL.ENT
MSL.SPR
MSL.SP1
MSL.ARC
MSL.AR1
MSL.DOC
MSLUTIL.EXE
BRUN20.EXE
To install program onto a hard disk drive, run the
file called MSLUTIL.EXE. It is on the original MSL disk
you have. MSL may be copied an unlimited number of times.
The MSLUTIL utility will copy the entire MSL system onto
any disk you wish. If installing to a hard disk,
a subdirectory call MSL is created. NOTE: NEVER write-
protect the MSL disk you are installing from.

Master Station Log is written in GWBASIC and has been
compiled. BRUN20.EXE is the compiler `tag-a-long' file
and must be in the path anytime this program is run.

MASTER STATION LOG MAIN MENU

When you first run the program, you will see the main
menu. Here you have eight options. To choose an option,
press the first letter is the option title. For example,
you see P>RINT LOG. If you wish to print a log, then
press P. You may also go to the program utilities from
here. Just press F5 to do so. In the following pages,
each of the menu options is explained.

If you wish the program to automatically go to the ADD
ENTRY area when executed, see ON START GOTO in the
OPTIONS area.

5

TIME AND DATE LINE

The time and date line will be on the top of the
screen most of the time you're in Master Station Log. It
shows current zulu time, current date, current RAYDAY,
and also displays current shift on duty.

The zulu time dislayed is current computer time. If
your computer runs on local or normal time, disregard
the word ZULU.

All of the settings in the time and date line can be
changed in C>HANGE SETUP. See that option for more
information.

6

ADD LOG ENTRY

Enter this area if you wish to start your log or add an
entry. Before starting the MSL, please verify all
information on the time and date line and the log form is
correct and current.

To make an entry just type in the information like you
would on a typewriter. Just try typing a few lines here.
You'll get the hang of it real fast.

ZULU time and IN areas have default settings. These
will appear as you enter the area. If you wish to accept
the default, just press enter. If you wish to change the
area, type in what you wish. The time you choose must be
between 0001 and 2400. The initials you type in must be
two or three characters long. If you type in a three
character initial then MSL will put you in the next area.

To save an entry, press enter with an empty
ACTION/EVENT line or press the F10 key.

If a mistake is made on a saved entry, see MODIFY
ENTRY.

Auto-dot will place dots (.) at the end of all
entries that do not reach the far right line.
7

MSL uses a destuctive backspace only.

To return to the MSL main menu, press the F1 key. If
you have an entry pending, you will be asked to save it or
not.

If you wish to exit the program here press the [Esc]
key. If you have an entry pending, you will be asked
to save it or not.

The start time of your log will be the time of the
first entry. If there is no entry, then 0001Z is
displayed.

NOTE: If screen blank activates while you have an
entry pending, you will lose that data. For more info
see SCREEN BLANK in the OPTIONS area.

8

MODIFY LOG ENTRY

In this area you may modify saved entries. Any
modifications made in this option with reflect on the
current log, but a copy of the original entry will also
be saved under another file. All modifications may be
printed along with the log so long as the LOG MOD PRINT
switch is turned on. For more info see OPTIONS.

When you first enter this area you are asked to enter
the number of entry to modify. After doing so, you are
asked which area to modify. After all modifications are
made press the [Esc] key to leave.

Deletions are also done here. Like modifications, the
original data is saved and may be printed later.

To leave this area, press the [Esc] key. If changes
or modifications have been made, you will be asked to save
them or not.

9

VIEW ENTIRE LOG

Here you can see the entire log without it scrolling
off the screen. If the log is to big to fit on the
screen, you will be told to press [SPACE] to see more.
If not, you will be told to press [SPACE] to leave. This
area is good for counting entries for modifying.

10

PRINT LOG

In this area, you can print a copy of the current log
or print a saved (archived) log.

If you choose to print an archived log, you will be
shown a menu of archived logs. Type in the date of the
log you wish to print.

If you wish that all MSL modifications be printed, see
OPTIONS to verify that the LOG MOD PRINT switch is on.

To abandon this area at any time, press the [Esc] key.

All start and stop times are the first and last entry's
times.

Some printers will not print a double line.

11

RESTART LOG

Under RESTART LOG, you have two options. Both will
erase the currunt log.

The number one option is for normal restarting like -
shift changes, RADAY change overs, and such. The current
log will be saved and may be printed up later. Archiving
the current log will also advance the page number by one.

Number two, RESTART LOG, is for the times when the log
just needs to be dumped and started over. No data is
saved.

12

CHANGE SETUP

Here you will be able to change most of the Master
Station Log variables. Anything on the time and date
line may be altered here. Choose the number you wish to
change.

1. TIME is the computer time and also what the
program knows as ZULU time.

2. The date may be changed here.

3. FACILITY may be ten characters long with no commas.

4. The page of the MSL may be changed here.

5. SHIFT/IN is where you set the default shift and
initials. Valid shifts are A, B, C, and D. The default
initials may be two or three characters long. If it is
two, [ENTER] must be pressed to save the input.

6. RADAY is entered here. Entry must be from 001 to
365.

Changes are saved instantly so you will not be asked
to save.

13

OPTIONS

In this area, you are able to set four switches.

ON START GOTO: This is where the program is going to
go when it loads up. Either main menu area or add entry
area.

LOG MOD PRINT: If yes, then after any printing of a
log, all entries that were changed or deleted will be
printed. This is also true when printing archived logs.

ARCHIVE SETTING: Is the number of full days logs that
will be saved. Number must be one through thirty.

SCREEN SAVER: This sets the seconds before the screen
blanks. Everytime a key is pressed, the countdown is
started over. Settings are sixty seconds through three
hundred seconds. Or OFF which disables the screen saver.
When activated, you must press any key to return to the
program. NOTE: Screen saver returns to the program by
running from the start. If an entry is pending when the
screen saver activates, that data is lost! Remember to
always save your entries. For more info see ADD ENTRY.

Press the [Esc] key to leave UTILITIES area.

14

EXIL MSL

To exit MSL in the main menu, press E.

To exit MSL in the add entry area, press the [Esc] key.
If you have an entry pending you will be asked to save it
or not.

15

MSLUTIL.EXE

To run this program, TYPE MSLUTIL in DOS or press F5
while in the MSL main menu.

In this utility, you may, install or plant the MSL
program on any disk, recover from a program/system error,
or print this documentation.

To install this program just follow the instuctions as
you go. If you are installing onto C: or D: drive, a
subdirectory called \MSL will be created. When an
installation is done, all MSL setting are changed to
default settings and all data is erased on the new copy.
If you wish to copy the MSL program and NOT erase the
data, you must use the COPY command in DOS.

Running the recover from error utility should ONLY be
done if a program error has haulted the use of the
program. M>INOR recovery should be tried first. If you
still have problems, use C>RITICAL recovery. Both of
these recovery utilities will wipe out any current data
you have. C>RITICAL will wipe out all archived logs also.

To print this documentation, run the third option.
this booklet does not print in page format so cutting to
size will be required.
