MINES [textfile] [[/parameter]...]
The objective of mines is to walk from the upper left corner of a
mine field to the bottom right corner, which is marked with a percent
sign. You are represented as an at-sign, and must navigate using
information about the area around you. But if you happen to make a
mistake and step on a mine, you will be blown up and have to start
all over with a fresh mine field.
To move, use the directional keypad (known as the arrow keys).
Diagonal steps may be taken by using the numbers (1, 3, 7, and 9)
between the marked arrow keys. The number of mines adjacent to your
position, including diagonals, will be displayed. If no mines are
adjacent, the SPACE bar may be used to clear the area around your
position. [Note that the center of any keypad will also have the
same affect, but Num Lock must be on when using the directional

familiar with other computers. They are as follows:

You may get navigational help by pressing a question mark; this
will also state whether you may use the five key in the directional
keypad, or if you must use the SPACE bar. This will not give hints
on where mines are located.

When the game starts, a 14 by 9 grid will appear on the screen.
You will be asked how many mines you wish to have to navigate around.
Just pressing return will assume the normal 25 mines. Any number of
mines from 10 to 50 may be selected. (10 is very easy and 50 is
%$#@ hard!) Not all games can be won.
Unexplored land is labeled with stars. Underneath, a mine may be
hidden, or there may be nothing. Use the number of adjacent mines to
verify wether or not a spot is safe to step on. If you die, you will
see where the mines were placed as well as the one that got you.
You may quit any time during the moving phase by pressing ESCape
and answering the prompts.
Mines version 2.0 offers a "BOSS" key. This is a special key that
flips to a screen that looks like work (a special feature allowing
game play during office hours). Unfortunately, games that offer this
feature usually display an empty spread sheet or a graph. Mines,
however, allows you to design a custom screen so your "BOSS screen"
fits right into with what you should have been doing in the first
Any text file you desire may be supplied as an argument to MINES.
The first 25 lines are read and are stored away. During the game,
depressing any function key or ALT-key combination will instantly
bring up the "BOSS screen" and then sit there until another key is
If you invoke the "BOSS screen" without specifying a file to MINES
at the begining, the screen will go blank as if a screen save utility
has just activated to save your screen from burning out.
Mines v3.0 allows a few selectable options to be specified at the
command line as parameters.
/CLEAR - Anytime you have no mines around you, the area is
automatically erased as if you hit the space bar.
This saves you some work, but it can be distracting
/QUIET - Supresses the beep when you die. Otherwise known
as an option for playing in business environments.
/MARK - Allows you to mark areas as suspect mines. You can
mark areas that are not mines as well. Use this
option if you have a poor memory.
To mark a spot adjacent to you as questionable, use
the directional keyboard with the Alternate key.

Note some programs will prevent you from being able
to use these keys.
/PROTECT - Does not allow you to step on areas that you have
marked as possibly being unsafe. Protect mode will
automatically invoke mark mode. This option is for
preventing dumb mistakes or fast keyboards that
stutter or repeat.
/UNMAPPED - When you die all mines are uncovered by removing
unexplored territory. This mode reveals the mines
but also lets you see where you haven't been. Good
for analyzing where you made a mistake.
/RETRY - The option for cheats. Allows you to continue,
after you've gotten blown up. What makes this game
addactive is that you have to restart when you make
a mistake... "Drat! I almost has it; let me try
again." (This removes that element of the game for
the sake of -oh, I hit the wrong key-.
/ALL - Invokes all the options listed above.
Mines v3.1 has cosmetic changes. When using the /RETRY parameter
the mine field is not displayed until the game is over. /QUIET is
now assumed to be the office-environment switch. It now clears the
screen when you leave as well as supressing noises. Several of the
prompts have been cleaned up to make field entry feel more natural.
It was discovered that some programs will prevent the Alt-keypad
keys for marking mines from being used. Using Control with the
keypad should now work, although Control-Up and Control-Down may also
