NOTES ON HACK
-------------

If you wear gloves, weild a dead cockatrice to turn other creatures to stone. DO NOT touch a dead cockatrice yourself!
Dragons can breathe fire for full damage. Wands of sleep are nearly useless, use a wand of death of polymorph.
Shopkeepers are excellent fighters. Do not attack UNLESS STR = 18/000, HP = 80, AC = -3.
Wands of digging are always found under dead minotarus.
Wands of wishing are always found under a rock in a cul-de-sac in the mazes.
Name two-handed swords 'Orcrist' and score extra damage against Orcs.
Worm teeth are found under dead lon worms, and are transformed into crysknives by a scroll of enchant weapon.
Engraving 'Elbereth' acts as a scare monster scroll as long as you neither move not attack (teleporting doesn't count).
Attack a long worm from the rear. It's tooth/crysknife is equal to a +5 dagger.
Purple worms, Lurkers, Trappers, and Chamelions can swallow and digest you. Use a wand of digging or teleport out.
Chamelions disguise themselves as other monsters, while Mimics disguise themselves as items.
Xans biting you on the leg decrease you carrying capacity by 4, then 8 food rations. Further hits are useless.
Demons reproduce quickly, so kill them to survive.
Nurses will heal you if you take off ALL you armor and don't weild any weapons.
Applying pick-axes will NOT violate Elbereth.
Longswords are easiest to hit with, two handed swords the hardest. All other weapons have equal chances to hit.
At 18/00 strength, throwing arrows is the same as using a bow.
Wishes: can be 1 piece of armor, weapon, wand, or other large item, or 3 of any potion, scroll, or gem.
Diamonds are the most valuble gems. Wish for those if you have spare charges.

THE FINAL BATTLE
----------------

The object of the game is to kill the Wizard of Yendor and retrieve the Amulet. To do this, you must descent to the
39th level. You cannot descend below the 27th by normal means. You will need: A ring of teleport control, a ring of fire resistance
(or equivalent), a ring of teleportation (or equivalent), a potion of confusion (or equivalent), and a scroll of teleport. Drink
the potion, wear the rings, read the scroll. Choose the 39th level.
After you arrive, the Wizard and a Hound of Hell reside in a bunker, inside a moat at the center of the level. The bunker
is a solid wall, and you cannot teleport into it. It is surrounded by a moat, which can only be crossed by a wand of fire, pushing
a rock into it, or a potion of levitattion. Attack the bunker from the right to fight the Wizard first. If you fail to kill
the Wizard, he teleports up to the next level, and gets weaker the higher he goes. At each level, you get one chance to kill
the Wizard.
Sucessfully leaving with the Amulet will add 5000 points to your score, and double it. The Amulet itself has no magical
properties whatsoever.

ITEM EATEN EFFECTS
---------- -------
Spinach (in tin) Increases strength.
Salmon (in tin) Makes you drop weapons & rings.
Royal Jelly Cures leg wounds. Increases HP's and STR
Carrot Cures blindness?
Dead Lizard Lessens confusion

Poisonous things do damage and lower strength.
Things that make you sick do damage.
Rotten food has no nutritional value.

bdegmnoswCDILPSTUY are large monsters.
abhksADKSV are always poisonous.

WHAT ACTIONS AFFECT YOUR LUCK IN HACK
-------------------------------------

Throwing identified gems at unicorns +5
Throwing unidentified gems at unicorns +1
Playing Hack during a full moon +1
Attacking a blinded floating eye -1 (1:500 chance)
Killing a peaceful/tame monster -1
Killing a shopkeeper -2
Killing a unicorn -5

Luck is a variable between 10 and -10.
'Tame' means tamed by you or tame by itself.
The only 'peaceful' creatures are shopkeepers.
Tame monsters will never attack you.
Peaceful monsters fight only if provoked.
Luck affects your ability to hit creatures.
If luck < 0, wands of wishing may not work.
If luck < -3, wands of wishing do not work.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
