HACK (v 1.0.1)

HACKCLUE.TXT

Tips/Clues for v 1.0.1:

Beginning (Dungeon lvls. 1-3)
-----------------------------
When starting out:
KNIGHTS: Due to your low armor class and nice weapons, you
are usually the most successful. When you begin,
you need to find food! The are descriminatory towards
you are far as rations go.
FIGHTERS: You start out as the second strongest character, and
you have a two-handed sword to back up your strength.
When you first start out, the sword won't hit much
because of your low experience, as you gain exp., you
should hit more often. You start out with Ac 7, which
isn't too bad, but I'd find better if I were you!
CAVEMEN: You are the strongest character at the onset (18), and
with your +1 bow/arrows and your mace, you are a rather
formidable character indeed. Your Ac is a bit high (8),
so it's best to find some armor quickly. Due to your
'Neandrathalness' you have a hard time finding secret
doors.
TOURISTS: You have a nice offensive weapon (30+ +2 darts) but that
is it besides your camera. You have enough food for a
couple of armies, so no need to worry about that.
SPELEOLOGISTS: Average strength (13) but no weapon at onset.
You have a refrigerator (thought no use has been
fathomed for it as of yet). Find a weapon/armor!
WIZARDS: Best starting potential. First, (P)ut on your rings. If
your Strength goes down or Ac up, take it off! If vice
versa, then applaud. Read your scrolls, they could be
helpful. (Z)ap your wands....if you have a wishing wand,
there should be no stopping you!

Food
----
Keep ANY food you get your hands on! As you get down to about the
15th level, the food becomes more and more scarce. I've lost
many a character to starvation down there. Their ghosts are not pretty.

Ghosts
------
Speaking of ghosts, unless you are about 10th lvl and have a +3
weapon, run away from ghosts! I killed one by luck when I was
5th lvl. Take the ghost into a room and then double back and get
it's possessions. NEVER get trapped in a dead-end corridor, only
go where you know it is safe, and go down as quickly as possible.
Ghost data is stored in the BONES.* files where * is the level the
ghost is on.

Monsters to Watch out For
-------------------------

Bats (B): Flit around making a major nusciance of themselves.
Imps (i): Almost impossible to hit.

Middle (Dungeon lvls. 4-10)
---------------------------

Shops
-----
If you have gold, buy the items you need. If you have any of the following,
use them! (Sometimes the following can also be found in the shop you are
trying to rob!):

Wand of Fire: Needs to hit the keeper 2 or 3 times, but it's worth it. You
get a heap of Exp. and all the keeper's gold.
Wand of Digging: Dig your way out to the nearest passage.
Wand of Cold: Same as Fire.
Wand of Polymorph: (Untested) Should turn the keeper into something more
managable (like a Dragon)
Wand of Teleport Monster: (Untested) Should work.
Ring/Scroll of Teleportation: Pops you out to another location on the
level (sometimes back into shop..aaa!)
Wand of Death: Kills the keepers right out.
Others: If you find any new ways, tell me!

Monsters to Watch out For
-------------------------
Cockatrices (c): Turn you to stone w/o saving throw!
I genocide them if possible. Kill at ALL costs!
Wraiths (W): Will drain Experience.....not nice.
Nymphs (N): Seduce you to give them your armor.

Lower (Dungeon lvls. 11-?; lowest I've reached is 20th)
-------------------------------------------------------

The Amulet
----------
The object of you quest is hidden anywhere from the 20th lvl down.
It is seen as the " symbol. Get it and leave! Magical properties
unknown.

Masses
------
The monsters get smart and attack in groups of 5 or 6. This gets
mean when you get hit six times in one attack round...go to a door
and kill them one at a time as they come through.

Traps
-----
The traps are meaner, and most are poisoned; beware!

Monsters to Watch out For
-------------------------
Purple Worms (P): *VERY* mean. Get two attacks/round and hit you
for 30-40 points damage. They were able to slay
my 11th lvl knight who had -6 armor!
Snakes (S): Sometimes poisoness.
Killer Bees (k): Always travel in swarms. Sting is usually poisoness.
They reduced a 10th lvl fighter with 18/66 strength
to a doomed baby. Either get a poison resistance
ring or LOW armor class. My -6 knight wasn't hit.
Giant Ants (A): Drain Strength
Long Worm (W~~~~~~~~~): Only found one. They get upwards of 12 attacks
a round. Attack the tail where the head can't
attack.
Xorn (X): Unkillable (so far.) Was hit with 3 fireballs and 2 +5 sword
attacks by a 9th lvl fighter with 18 strength to no avail.
Xut (x): Prick your legs so you can't move or attack. Better have
something to zap `em with....
Dragon (D): Breathes fire for upwards of 80 points damage.

-------------------------------
Current High Score:
26751 by Op the Knight
(Run by Paul Johnson)

Humor
-----
Some wierd ways I have died:

Falling down the stairs
Choking on my Food
Levitating into the ceiling (bonk!)
Panic (disk error)
Hitting my self with a fumbled weapon
By my own ghost (of a former life)
By a poison dart (oh, mercy...)

Anyone else have any wierd ways?

Any questions or comments? Leave to the KHA in care of Paul Johnson
or Ian Schirado.

Happy Hacking!!!!!!!!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
