ABOUT PROFIT PARTNER
Profit Partner is a Windows 3.x program that performs basic profit analysis calculations. Profit Partner can help determine the extent to which your ideas for a product or service can be turned into a profitable venture. Fixed costs, unit variable costs, unit sales price, total profit desired and monthly sales estimates are all entered through the use of scroll bars. Project information can be saved to a file for later recall, and a push-button report writer is provided.

(If you have the demo version of Profit Partner, see DEMO VERSION below.)

SETUP
Profit Partner consists of three files:

winprof.exe - the program file
winprof.pro - saved project file
winprof.wri - the file you are reading

These files should be copied into a suitable directory on your hard disk. A new Program Item for Profit Partner should then be set up in Program Manager, referencing the program file winprof.exe.

Profit Partner also requires that Microsoft's vbrun100.dll be present in your Windows directory. This file is supplied with your registered copy of Profit Partner and is available on many Bulletin Boards.

SETTING PROGRAM VARIABLES
Mouse and keyboard input (TAB, PgUp. PgDn, arrows, etc.) are both supported.

Horizontal scroll bars are used to set the five main program variables. The precision of each scroll bar is controlled by the small button to the left of the respective scroll bar. (H) stands for High Range and will result in large changes as the scroll bar is adjusted. (L) stands for Low Range and will result in smaller changes as the scroll bar is adjusted.

Total Fixed Costs - Fixed costs are the startup and overhead costs that will be incurred whether or not any products or services are ever actually sold. Examples include equipment purchases, advertising, permits, rent, utilities, etc.

(H) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the total fixed costs by $100. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/increase the total fixed costs by $1,000. (L) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the total fixed costs by $1. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/ increase the total fixed costs by $10. In either range, the scroll indicator can be dragged to any point on the scroll bar. The maximum total fixed costs amount supported by Profit Partner is $30,000.

Unit Variable Cost - Unit variable cost is the cost directly associated with each unit of production. Examples include materials, supplies, postage, hired labor, etc.

(H) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the unit variable cost by $10. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/increase the unit variable cost by $100. (L) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the unit variable cost by $0.05. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/ increase the unit variable cost by $1. In either range, the scroll indicator can be dragged to any point on the scroll bar. The maximum unit variable cost amount supported by Profit Partner is $1,000.

Unit Sales Price - Unit sales price is the actual price charged to the customer for each unit of production that is sold.

(H) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the unit sales price by $10. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/increase the unit sales price by $100. (L) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the unit sales price by $0.05. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/ increase the unit sales price by $1. In either range, the scroll indicator can be dragged to any point on the scroll bar. The maximum unit sales price amount supported by Profit Partner is $1,500.

Total Profit Desired - Total profit desired is the total amount of money (net of all costs) that is desired as a result of undertaking the project.

(H) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the total profit desired by $100. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/increase the total profit desired by $1,000. (L) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the total profit desired by $1. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/ increase the total profit desired by $10. In either range, the scroll indicator can be dragged to any point on the scroll bar. The maximum total profit desired amount supported by Profit Partner is $30,000.

Monthly Unit Sales - Monthly unit sales is the number of units expected to be sold each month. Sales volume is entered in order to calculate the number of months required to reach the break even point and the desired profit level.

(H) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/increase the monthly unit sales by 100 units. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/increase the monthly unit sales by 1,000 units. (L) The left/right scroll arrows will decrease/ increase the monthly unit sales by 1 unit. Clicking to the left/right of the scroll indicator will decrease/ increase the monthly unit sales by 10 units. In either range, the scroll indicator can be dragged to any point on the scroll bar. The maximum monthly unit sales amount supported by Profit Partner is 5,000 units.

PROJECT FILE
A list box and three command buttons are provided to enable project information to be stored for later retrieval.

The list box always displays the name of the currently selected project record. Other project names (when present) are listed by clicking on the list box's down arrow. To select one of these records, simply click on the project record's name. If a scroll bar appears on the right side of the list, it can be used to scroll through additional project names. When a project record is selected, all information in Profit Partner is immediately updated to reflect the stored values of that record.

The New command button is used to add records to the project file. When New is pressed, a window will appear in which the name of the new project record can be entered. After entering the new project name press the OK button to add the record to the project file. The initial project record values are set to zero. Profit Partner can store up to 10 project records.

The Save command button is used to update the project record in the project file with the currently displayed settings.

The Delete command button is used to remove the current project record from the project file. When Delete is pressed a confirmation window will appear.

REPORT WRITER
Select - This button causes the currently displayed project information to be captured as a print line for a Profit Scenario report. A Profit Scenario report is useful for comparing various cost/pricing combinations. An unlimited number of print lines can be included in a Profit Scenario report.

Print - This button causes the current Profit Scenario report to be sent to Windows Print Manager, and ultimately to the printer.

HELP, ABOUT, EXIT
Help uses Windows Write to display this program documentation. (Windows Write must reside in the directory \windows on the current disk drive.)

About displays the program version number and provides information for contacting the author of Profit Partner.

Exit provides a one-button method of exiting the program.

TIPS ON USING PROFIT PARTNER
Profit Partner can be used to present a variety of scenarios. Some examples are:

Assembly/Manufacturing - This is the classic case for which Profit Partner was originally designed. Deciding whether or not certain costs are fixed or variable can sometimes be difficult. If a bulk supplies are used, classifying them as fixed costs will have the added advantage of taking scrap material into account.

Services - Profit Partner can analyze most service-oriented projects. The unit variable cost should not include labor costs unless someone else is being paid to perform the service. The unit sales price can often be used to represent your hourly billing rate. The units of output in this case will be billable hours, and the total profit desired can be adjusted to fit your schedule.

Monthly Figures - To determine how many units or hours need to be produced each month, reduce the fixed costs to a monthly figure. (Imagine monthly payments on capital expenditures rather than the total investment amount.) Also include monthly expenses such as rent, phone, etc. as fixed costs. At the Break Even level of production all monthly expenses will be covered. The total profit desired figure can then be used to determine the minimum level of activity required to achieve the monthly income specified.
