ÐBl Ð This is a demonstration file for WPXREF. (The pages are
small to make the file easier to create.)Ñÿÿ
JÃ*$ÃPage of @Zƒ
ÿÑ This file contains
several footnotes, which have codes to establish cross references
to footnotes.âÿ
JThis is the first footnote. It ends with a code to which
we can later refer.==Aâ We can for example, refer to what is now the
first footnote this way: note number =A. That works because the
code that ends the previous sentence refers to the code I put
into the first footnote. Processing through WPXREF will replace
that code by the appropriate number. We can refer to what is nowÜÜ the second footnoteâÿ
JThis is the second footnote. It also ends with a code,
chosen to show that you can use the letters in any order you
want.==Pâ with a similar kind of reference, like this:
note =P. Move these footnotes around in editing, and the
references remain established: the codes in the text get
replaced by the proper numbers. We can also refer to footnotes
for which we have not established codes. For example, note =d
will be replaced by what is now number three for the third
footnote, which goes at the end of this sentence.â
ÿ
JThird footnote.==dâ@@AÜ ܌
The code at the end of the last paragraph is a page number
target specifier. We can refer to the appropriate page this way:
page no. @A. And we can refer to pages not defined yet, like
this: page no. @Q. The target will be the next page. And we can
refer to pages that never get defined: page no. @M. An error
message results, and the reference gets replaced by asterisks.

We can also refer to outline sections. For that, we need to
establish some outline sections. So we establish some.
ï€ïFirst level heading.
ïïSubhead, to which we will refer.!!a
ï‚ïSubsubhead, which refers to section !a, above.
ï€ïNext main heading, which refers to its subheading !b below.Ü܌ ïïThis is what gets referred to.!!b

@@QThe paragraph began with that code because we needed a
target for an earlier page reference.

Again, the significance of all this is that as things get
changed around in the editing process, the references remain
correct, and the correct entries appear after you use WPXREF.

Look at the parts of this document you have not already seen
©© the footnotes and the footer. Then run WPXREF from the DOS
prompt this way:

>WPXREF wpxref.tst outfile F P HÜ܌
WPXREF will create the file "outfile". Read that file into
WordPerfect. Fix up the formatting of the text, footer, and
footnotes by running the spelling checker on the entire document,
using only the word count option. Then take a look at the
document, perhaps using the preview function.

To get a better idea of what WPXREF can do, edit this test
file to move the references around, and then run the test
again.@@Z That page code is for the footer, which as a result
will know the total number of pages in the document.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
