I: What you have

Files enclosed:

coding so as to not interfere with the IBM Line Drawing
characters of WP 5.1 (Times-Roman Typeface)

CYRILLIC.SFL: 12 Pt. Landscape font, good especially for envelopes

HPRUS.PRS: Printer file for these fonts. This is modified HPLASEII.PRS

so be sure the font files are in your WP directory OR that
you have properly set the DOWNLOAD PATH section of the
printer setup.

RUSSIAN.EGA: The EGA Font file, encoded as the ALTERNATIVE VARIANT.

LOADRUS.EXE: Loads the Russian SCREEN font. Both LOADRUS.EXE and
Á``ÁÁ¸¸ ÁÁÁRUSSIAN.EGA must be in the same subdirectory.

RESETVID.COM: If you have an VGA, the screen will shrink when the font
is loaded. If you wish to reset the screen, run RESETVID.
The Russian font will be erased, and your display returned
to normal.

SETRUS.WPM: WordPerfect 5.1 MACRO to automatically setup the Laser
printer for Russian by SELECTING the HPRUS.PRS printer
file. It will also automatically setup your screen so that
when you load WordPerfect, the Russian font is not erased.

RUSLAS.DOC: This file in WP5.1 Format

RUSLAS.TXT: This file in DOS TEXT Format

RUSSKEY.COM: Loads the Russian Keyboard Driver. This provides a phonetic
key assignment that can be toggled with SCROLL LOCK.

RUSSKEY.ASM: The assembly file. You can change the keys to anything
that suits your needs. Then reassemble it.

RUSSIAN.TXT: Some sample Russian text in ASCII format

RUSSIAN.DOC: Some sample Russian text in WP5.1 Document format.

PRINT RUSSIAN.

In order to properly install the HPRUS.PRS driver, make the following choices:
Ôh)0*0*0*°°ԌSHIFT-F7 (PRINTER SETUP)
(S) SELECT printer
(A) ADDITIONAL printers
(L) LIST printer files
Highlight HPRUS.PRS
(S) to select this printer file. Read the HELP file, and press F7.
(5) or (F) to select initial font. Highlight CYRILLIC 12 Pt. and press
(S) for select the font. Take this opportunity to also set you
downloadable font file path, if the files are not in your working
directory.

Press F7 to exit, the MAKE SURE! you also SELECT this printer on
the Printer Selection screen. Press F7 to return.

You may also set your font with CONTROL©F8. The normal font in the
lower ASCII positions of CYRILLIC is a Times Roman 12 Pt. font.

That's all there is to setting up the printer. When you exit, you
choices will automatically be saved so that when you again enter WP5.1
the printer will be automatically setup.

If you do not get Russian characters try Initializing the printer with
SHIFT©F7 (I). However, the characters should be downloaded automatically
as needed.

You may also EXECUTE the SETRUS.WPM macro, by typing ALT©F10 then SETRUS.
Assuming that your HPRUS.PRS file is in the default WordPerfect directory,
everything should be fine.

EGA/VGA FONT SETUP:
©©©©©©©
In order to actually be able to see what you are editing in Russian,
you will need THREE files:

RUSSIAN.EGA: is the Russian EGA (VGA) font file. The codes conform to theÔh)0*0*0*°°Ԍ AL'TERNITIVNYJ variant.

LOADRUS.EXE: A font loader program to automatically load the Russian font.
LOADRUS.EXE AND RUSSIAN.EGA must be in the same subdirectory.

RUSSKEY.COM: Is a replacement KEYBOARD DRIVER. It will allow you to toggle
between English Key assignments and Russian (phonetic) key
assignments by pressing SCROLL LOCK. You can enter WP5.1,
edit in English, press SCROLL LOCK, edit in Russian, and
press SCROLL LOCK again to get back to English. BE AWARE!!
while Russian is active your WP5.1 keyboard command letters will
NOT function properly. To execute WP commands switch back to
ENGLISH.

Typical Batch file to set up RUSSIAN EGA screen font:

LOADRUS
RUSSKEY
WP

Because this is free, there will be very limited support. You can
play around with it as much as you like. I just ask that you DONT
change to ASCII code assignments for the Russian.

A note on the keyboard:
The keyboard is phonetically arranged. This does not conform to any
standard at all. If you want to change it, I have included the RUSSKEY.ASM
file. You might want to use the Soviet Standard, though unless you
really NEED to learn it to type on Soviet Keyboards, my layout is much
faster. Here are the EXCEPTIONS:

Q=SHCH W=SH U=Y Y=Yerih [=YA ]=YU \=YAW ©=backward E ==Short i.\
~=Hard sign ;=soft sign J=CH H=ZH X=X C=TS

That's it folks!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
