On April 27 someone overrode the signal to the HBO
satellite and instead of "The Falcon and the Snowman", the
following message appeared on millions of screens across
the country:

"Good evening, HBO, from Captian Midnight. $12.95 a month?
No way! Showtime / The Movie Channel beware!"

The message was a protest against HBO's desision to
scramble it's signal so it can only be recieved with an
expensive decoder. The $12.95 refers to the monthly charge
once the decoder has been purchased.

The Information Police couldn't have that! They spent LOTS
of our tax money to track down this communications criminal
and bring him to Information Justice.

Captain Midnight was John R. MacDougall of Ocala, Florida.
He is (was) an employee of Central Florida Teleport Uplink
station and runs his own home dish business, which isn't
doing too well. MacDougall was fined $5,000 for his crime
against the System. He can scarcely afford to pay it. One
member of the Information Establishment said: "Captain
Midnight never achieved folk-hero status... he didn't have
any no. 1 records written about him, and that's always an
indication." I say that yuppie is wrong, and we, the
hackers, can prove him wrong. I'm posting this message on
boards from D.C to L.A.. If only ** 500 ** of us
contribute just TEN dollars each, we can pay MacDougall's
WITH IT! That's only ten from each state. If we can pull
it off, and particularly if we can go over $5,000, the media
will take notice and we will have done more than just helped
the brave John MacDougall. We will have vindicated Captain

MY ten is in the bag, we only need 499 more.
If you feel as strongly about this as I do, send a check or
money order with a note "from the Cheshire Catylist", "from
The Cracker", etc in the corner, payable to John R. MacDougall,
and mail it to:

John R. MacDougall

Make sure you reference the CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT HACKER'S FUND.

Thank you, and Captain Midnight thanks you!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read:
