WordPerfect Installation Program

Written by Derrick Cedars
with assistance from Steven Fuller
distributed by Start With Software, Chico, CA.

Note: This program was written with the intention of helping WordPerfect 5.0
owners (the legitimate ones) install the program onto hard disk drives. This
version supports those owners who have either a "C" or "D" drive. This
installation is not intended for copying the program onto floppy diskettes.
We sincerely hope you will find this program beneficial.
All of this is for NON-COMMERCIAL use ONLY. Freely copy it and give it to new
5.0 owners... it's just intended to be helpful because I felt WP's install was
a little "messy" in the way it set up the directories.

What the program does:

This program will install the contents of your WordPerfect program into the
following directories:

\WP5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . (main program files)
\WP5\DATA. . . . . . . . . (data and graphic files)
\WP5\LEARN . . . . . .(tutorial and workbook files)
\WP5\MACROS. .(macros and alternate keyboard files)
\WP5\PRINTERS. . . . . . . . . . . .(printer files)
\WP5\SPELLER . . . (dictionary and thesaurus files)

It helps to have your disks arranged in the proper order before
you begin the installation procedure.

The proper order of the disks you will need to install is as
follows:
1) The WordPerfect Installation Disk
2) WordPerfect 1
3) WordPerfect 2
4) Speller
5) Thesaurus
6) Fonts/Graphics
7) Printer 1
8) Printer 2
9) Printer 3
10) Printer 4
11) Conversion (referred to as "Convert")
12) PTR Program
13) Learning (referred to as "Learn")

How do I use the install program?

1) Boot your system and go the DOS prompt ("C>" or "C:\" or
whatever you use).
2) Place the installation disk in the "A" drive and type
"A:", then press the return key.
3) Type "install" followed by the return key. Then simply
follow the prompts.

After you run the installation program you should place your original
WordPerfect diskettes in their sleeves and put them away somewhere safe.

How do I start the WordPerfect program?

From the prompt "A>", type C: (then return), type "CD\WP5"
followed by the return key. Then simply type "WP" and press
the return key again.

How do I start the WordPerfect tutorial program?

From the C> dos prompt type "CD\WP5" [return] and then
"Learn" [return]
(page break)
SETTING UP LIBRARY FOR WORDPERFECT VERSION 5:

1) At the Library main menu press "4" for setup.
2) Select the letter option you want for WordPerfect 5.0.
3) Press "1" to edit that entry.
4) On the first line, enter the Title you want to appear on the
menu (for example: "WordPerfect 5.0")
5) On the second line, enter "C:\WP5\WP.EXE".
6) On the third line, enter "C:\WP5\DATA".
7) On the line that asks whether or not this is a WordPerfect
program, answer yes.
8) Then press the F7 key twice to return to the main menu.

Note for the Tutorial program: Set it up the same way as above
except when it asks for the program type "Learn.bat" and where it
asks if this is a DOS command, say "Yes".

AT LAST...

Once you start up WordPerfect, you should immediately identify
which printer (or printers) you are using. Do the following:

Press "Shift F7", then press "S" to select printer. Next, select
"2" to add a printer. Move the highlight to your printer name and
press the return key. Answer the prompts according to your printer
specs.
For more information on setting up your printer, see page 305 in
the reference section of the main manual.

Once you have selected your printer you may delete the master
printer files from your hard disk Do as follows:

1) Exit to dos and type "CD\WP5\PRINTERS" [return]
2) type "del *.all" [return]

This will give you back about 1 mgb of drive space.

Enjoy your new program and remember WordPerfect's technical
support "HOT-LINE": (800) 321-5906 They are open from 7am to 6pm
Rocky Mountain Time (five days a week, half days on Saturday).

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
