When WordPerfect prints graphics, it uses one of three graphics fonts which
WordPerfect recognizes. The question arises as to how to know which of the
fonts will be used especially when a CGM file is imported.

Where possible WP picks the closest match. In some formats, there is no font
description, only a font number. An example of this is Harvard Graphics.
Harvard Graphics knows that font number one is Times Roman, font two is
Century SchoolBook and so on. The font is saved out in CGM format, which
does not contain any information about what the font is. In a situation like
this, WordPerfect basically guesses.

CGM will also not give any indication of what the width of the characters is,
so WordPerfect takes an educated guess, figuring that the width is 75% of the
height. This educated guess works out in some cases, but in others there are
problems causing text in a CGM conversion to print incorrectly. There is
really no way WPCorp can fix this because they do not have anyway of figuring
what the original font is.

When WordPerfect makes the conversion of a CGM graphic file, it makes the
following conversion of graphic font information:
ÐÐX°` ¸ hÀpÈ xÐ (#€%ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ` ¸ hÀpÈ xÐ (#ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿXÿÿÐÐ
°ÂÂX` ` ÂFont number one is Courier ƀ%` Æ
°ÂÂX` ` ÂFont number two is Helvetica ƀ%` Æ
°ÂÂX` ` ÂFont number three is Times Romanƀ%` Æ

Any number higher than 3 in the font table is Helvetica.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
