HERE'S HOW HOOPSWARE WORKS:

You are encouraged to copy the SimplyWrite diskettes and share them
freely with others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete
programs, at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home or
workplace. This is not a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete
working version of the program.

If, after trying out the programs, you decide to continue to use them,
you are trusted to purchase SimplyWrite from the program's author, or
from an authorized dealer.

Why pay at all?
--------------------------------------------------------------
* You receive a CURRENT copy of the program
* You receive a professional printed manual
* The comfort that you own a pure, uninfected version
* You receive additional utilities or programs not included
on the shareware version
* Inexpensive upgrade offers
* Notification of new products
* Your input and ideas help shape future products
* Opputunity for technical support through mail
or PRODIGY EMAIL.
* A sense of pride and ownership, in having honestly
participated in the User Supported software revolution
* You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
distribution method which doesn't rely on expensive
advertising campaigns.

So please, dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
your friends and associates. But also be aware of the following
restrictions, designed to protect the community of User Supported software
users and authors, and to prevent greedy people from taking unfair advantage
of the trust, hard work, and good will of User Supported software authors:

1. No price or consideration may be charged. However, a distribution cost may
be charged for the cost of the diskettes, shipping, and handling, not to
exceed $10 total.

2. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified, deleted, nor
added to.

3. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.

4. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.

5. The Author retains all rights to the SimplyWrite programs.

6. The printed manual cannot be copied or reproduced in any way.

7. In the case of distribution via computerized "bulletin boards" or through
any other telecommunications link the following must be done:
* X-Modem or some other error checking protocol must be used
* All HoopsWare programs (and documentation files) must be
transferred in the original format.

8. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
you must provide them with the following written notice:

+-----------------------------------------------------+
These diskettes are distributed to you through the
courtesy of (your school or instructor name), and
Thomas Hoops. No royalty or registration fee has
been paid for the programs, which are for your use
and evaluation as a student.

If you wish to receive technical support from
HOOPSWARE, as well as announcements of updates and
improvements to the programs, you must first become
a "registered user." You do that by purchasing
each program you plan to use - from an authorized
dealer or directly from HOOPSWARE:

9. SimplyWrite may not be copied or shared outside the United States,
Canada, and England. We believe that most foreign users are best
served by their own publishers who sell licensed versions of SimplyWrite.

SimplyWrite comes with On-Line help, this should be enough for the
intuitive user. However, nothing beats a nice manual with graphic examples
and screens, simply not possible to distribute in the same manner as
the software itself. To get the full benefit of SimplyWrite, registration
is highly recommended. Registering the program with us will cause a manual
to be sent on its way to you.

SimplyWrite requires the following:

* Minimum 280K available RAM (more is recommended). Use the DOS CHKDSK
program to determine the amount of available RAM. The last line of
information from CHKDSK will show the amount of available memory. This
line should show at least 280,000 bytes free. For more information on
CHKDSK, please refer to your DOS manual.

* Minimum one 360K floppy disk drive. All DOS drives are supported.

* PC-DOS or MS-DOS version 2.1 or later.

* A monochrome, graphics, color, EGA or VGA monitor with 80 column display.

* A printer is optional. SimplyWrite will support any printer. However,
the printer should be able to print IBM graphics characters to realize
the full benefit of SimplyWrite.

INSTALLING SimplyWrite

While SimplyWrite only needs a system with a minimum of one 360K floppy
disk to run, it requires either two disk drives or a single 720K or
larger drive to unpack the installable version. This is because the
size of the self unarcing file plus the size of the unarced files
exceeds 360K. If you do not have this capability in your computer, you
may ask a friend with such a computer to assist you.

If you have at least 625K bytes free on a drive, copy the SWINSTAL.EXE to this
drive. Then type SWINSTALL. The files will automatically unpack, when you're
done, you may delete the SWINSTAL.EXE file.

If you have two floppy drives (for example two 360K drives), insert the disk
with SWINSTAL.EXE on in it into drive A:, with a blank formated floppy disk in
drive B: and (with A: your current drive), type "SWINSTAL B:"

SimplyWrite is wonderful for Laptops becuase it's so light-weight! You
only need the SW.EXE file at a minimum to run SimplyWrite. However, if
you want your on-line help to work, the help files *.hl? must be available.

Once SimplyWrite is unarced, you can configure it if you like:

CONFIGURE THE KEYBOARD TO ANY WAY YOU LIKE IT!!

As SimplyWrite comes, it is still key compatible with the key strokes
mentioned in the manual (which are nearly WordStar). However, a small
trade off has been made. earlier versions allowed several diffent
keystrokes to envoke the same function. For example ^K ^B performed
the same function in earlier versions as ^K B. Version 2.0 does not
have this feature - but you can establish how you want each function
invoked. In the case of the default settings, if more than one
keystroke invoked a particular function, the first sequence listed in
the manual is the one that is configured. For example the manual
states that a ^ or a ^ will move the cursor to the next word.
Therefore, the default setting allows the ^ to move to the next
word since it was the first keystroke denoted. The On-Line help will
show the current keystroke configurations if you have any doubts.

This may not be the way you like your functions set. To change them
a utility has been provided for you called SWSETUP. To change your
configuration, run SWSETUP. If you do not specifiy the SimplyWrite
configuration file after type SWSETUP (i.e. "SWSETUP MYCONFIG.SW") it
will assume the configuration file SW.CFG on the current drive and
directory. SW.CFG is the configuration file SimplyWrite will assume
unless it is otherwise instructed - see section on Networking
SimplyWrite.

When SWSETUP executes, you'll see a list of functions that
SimplyWrite supports in a column on the left and their associated
keystroke invocation in two columns on the right. To change a function
keystroke invocation, use your Up or Down arrow keys to position the
highlighted bar to the function you wish to change and press Enter.

The highlighted bar will then move to the "Prefix" column. This
column specifies the first keystroke in a two keystroke sequence. For
example, in the keystroke sequence ^O C (to center a line) the ^O would
be in this column and the C would be in the "Command" column. To
change the prefix, merely press the new key you wish to be the prefix
and the press Enter. If you don't wish to change the prefix, simply
press Enter by itself. If you wish to erase the Prefix keystroke,
press the Space bar then Enter. Once the Prefix column is set (by
pressing Enter) the highlight bar will move to the "Command" column.
Use the same procedure you used for setting the Prefix key to set this
key.

If you accidentally configure two or more commands with the same
Prefix and Command Sequence, only the first command with this sequence
will be invoked. When you have finished changing a the function
invocation, the highlight bar will return to the Function column
allowing you to change another function's invocation by using the same
method to selection that function as you had previously. When you're
all done configuring the keystrokes, press Esc while the highlight bar
is in the Function column and the new configuration will be saved and
SWSETUP will exit back to DOS.

PUT SimplyWrite ON YOUR NETWORK!

In earlier versions of SimplyWrite, SimplyWrite assumed the default
directory when looking for the files SW.CFG (the Configuration file),
SW.VID (the video configuration file), SW.PRT (the printer
configuration file) and SW.HL1 - SW.HL5 (the help files). If it could
not find these files upon execution it would create (all except SW.VID
and the help files). This caused SimplyWrites settings to be directory
dependent rather than user dependent.

In Version 2.0, SimplyWrite allows you to specify a path and/or a
specific path and file for each of these files. This is specified on
the command line when executing SimplyWrite. By setting up batch files
in the search path for each user that calls SimplyWRite with a
different file, or path and file specification, each user can have his
own settings for SimplyWrite and only one directory need contain the
actual SimplyWrite program.

The Files SimplyWrite currently uses are:
SW.PRT - the printer configuration file.
SW.VID - the video configuration file -See the CFGVIDEO Utility.
SW.CFG - the SimplyWrite configuration file.
SW.HL1 to SW.HL5 - the help files.

And new for Version 2.0 are the Macro files SWMACRO.XXX where .XXX
is .000 to .019.

To specify the path which all this files reside, invoke SimplyWrite
with a command-line parameter of /A immediately followed by the path
specification. For example, if there is a directory for your own
SimplyWrite configurations on drive H called MYSW and the directory the
SimplyWrite program itself is installed on is SYSSW; you would call
SimplyWrite as follows: "\SYSSW\SW /AH:\MYSW\". If there was an
exisiting file you wished to edit called Home.Txt you would type:
"\SYSSW\SW HOME.TXT /AH:\MYSW\". This can be rather tiring after a bit
so you may wish to create a batch file that you in particular use, this
batch file would look like this: "\SYSSW\SW %1 /AH:\MYSW\". You should
then place this batch file in a directory that is in your search path
and name it something unique to yourself like BOBSW.BAT - if your name
is Bob.

The /A parameter described above means All files. You may however
wish to have certain files common to users - like the help files or
printer configuration files. This can be done on the command-line by
specifying the exceptions after the /A parameter. The exception
parameters are:
/C - SW.CFG
/P - SW.PRT
/V - SW.VID
/M - macro files
/H - help files

So, if in the previous example, the help files were located on H:\SWSYS,
then the batch file should read:
"\SWSYS\SW %1 /AH:\MYSW\ /HH:\SWSYS\SW"
The final \SW is the file prefix for the help files - in this case they
are SW.HL1 through SW.HL5 (SimplyWrite will append the .HL? to the file

specification). The /H and the /M commands require the files path and
prefix name, but you cannot supply a suffix name since that varies for
each file. The /C, /P and /V parameters require a complete path and
file name.

NO MORE SLOW CURSOR!

In earlier versions the pokey cursor was avoided by way of "Speed Cursors".
Version 2.0 still supports the "Speed Cursor", but if you own an AT or
compatible computer, you can enjoy the benfit of being able to Fine Tune
your keyboard.

On a PC, the keystroke repeat rate hard set to 10 repitions per
second. The same rate is defaulted to on a AT, but can be changed to as
many as 30 repitions per second. The amount of time it takes for the
keyboard to go into its repeat mode can also be controlled.

Two new options have been added to the SimplyWRite parameters screen (the
Edit SimplyWRite Parameters option off the utilities menu from F1). These
are "AT Keyboard (Y/N)" and "AT Keyboard Value". To change your
keyboard, if its an AT or compatible, set the AT Keyboard (Y/N) field to
"Y". Then set the AT Keyboard Value field to one of the values which
fits your taste from the following table:

Reps Per Sec Seconds till repeat mode
.25 .50 .75 1.00
----------- -----------------------
30.0 0 32 64 96
26.7 1 33 65 97

2.3 29 61 93 125
2.1 30 62 94 126
2.0 31 63 95 127

Use the value in the row you wish for repitions per second. Of that
row, choose the value from the column which coresponds to the seconds
till repeat mode you wish. The typical Power-On value is 0, we find 4
comfortable.

A NEW CALCULATOR!

Earlier versions provided a pop-up calculator which performed date
calculations as well as numerical. Version 2.0's new calculator
provides those same functions, but in a more convenient and powerful
way. Additionally, Version 2.0's calculator has a built-in calendar.

The calculator is invoked the same way the calculator in earlier versions
was - the calculator option from the F1 key. The first thing you'll
notice different about it is its appearence. To perform a calculation,
merely enter the number, followed by the operation, then another number
and press "=" or Enter.

As you press each entry, you'll here a verification beep - if this
bothers you, press the "B" key. This toggles the beep on or off. A
beep indicator is provided in the top he left corner of the
calculator.

As you perform calculations, your previous values and operations will
be scrolled up on the virtual paper tape on top of the calculator. If
you wish to see previous lines, press the up arrow key or the "U" key.
To view forward, press the down arrow or "D" key. To move quickly
through the tape, the PageUp and PageDown keys may be used. If you wish
to get a hard copy of the tape, press the "P" key. The tape will be
erased every time you return to the SimplyWRite edit screen.

If the position of the calculator bothers you, you may reposition to
the top left corner of the screen by pressing F1. F2 will postion to
the top right corner of the screen, F3 to bottom left and F4 to bottom
right. This allows you to move it around to see text that may be under
it.

To change the precision, press the "F" key followed by a number from 0
to 9 for the number of decimal places you wish to see.

The Memory operations (additon, subtraction, recall and clear) are
performed by pressing the "M" key followed then by the operation key
("C" to clear and "R" to recall).

Pressing the "C" clears all the calculators registers, making way for
new calculations - but leaves the tape and memory intack. Pressing "E"
clears the last numerical entry.

Presing the Esc key returns you to the eidt window in SimplyWrite.

A CALENDAR!
Pressing the "X" changes the calculator from numerical to calendarical
mode. The day shown flashing is the current day (based on the computer's
clock). You may view following or previous months by pressing the up or
down arrows. You may view following or previous years by pressing the
Page Up or Down keys. You may advance or retreat the date marker by
using the left or right arrows. The date marker is used as a default
value for calculations.

The date marker is used in the case of addition or subtraction to
show the resulting date. If you press the "+" key, the calculator will
prompt you for the date you wish to add the days too. The default date
will be whatever the date the marker is on. Ofcourse you can change
this. After you press enter, the calculator will prompt you for the
number of days to add. The defualt value is always one. After
entering the number of days you wish to add, pressing enter will cause
the calculator to show you the result. Days may be subtracted in a
similar fashion by pressing the "-" key instead of the "+" key.

Difference between two dates varies slightly. After selecting your
initial date, you're prompted for the other date. After entering the
second date, the answer is shown in the display window.

Pressing Esc will return you to the numerical mode.

WHAT WAS THAT LAST FILE I WAS IN?
SimplyWrite now remembers the most recently used five file names
and your last position in them (if possible). By directly editiing or
creating a different file from your last, SimplyWrite will retain a
small list under the file name selection prompt. If you see a
previous file in the list you wish to revisit, merely use the Up and
Down arrows to highlight the file you wish and press Enter. The list
of files will be in the most recently used order. SimplyWrite will
editing NOT maintain this list once you exit.
