PS ³³ looks for complex words, long sentences, wasted words and the Personal ³³ Interest level of your writing. Your ideas are often being handicapped when:³³ * Your writing's Grade Level exceeds 8-10 (Readers strain to grasp ideas) ³³ * Sentences have 20 words or more, on average. (It's hard to follow) ³³ * Words have more than 1.5 Syllables. More than 10% are Long & Complex ³³ * Your Personal Interst score is 30 or less (5=Dull, 50=OK, 90=I'm yours)³³ ³³ PS also displays your "Word Wasters" - weak, wordy or wrong. Finally, PS' ³³ Running Grade Level & Pattern graphs show the 'Landscape of your writing ³³ style,' the variety of your style, and how closely it matches an 'ideal.' ³³ These can be invaluable in deciding which sections/sentences need editing. ³³±±±±±±±±±± Consider your audience, then choose your own guidlines. ±±±±±±±±±±±³³ PS' guidelines suit 'average adults;' they fit most business and everyday ³³ writing. "But, my readers aren't average adults." Does all good ³³ writing have simple structure and a personal tone? NO to both. PS suggests ³³ 'effective' not simple writing. Import ³³Test.Txt to test the IMPORT feature. Please read "PowerTyping" in the Manual.³³P~S Express is a memory-resident writing coach; use it in your word processor.³³±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±± GENERAL GUIDELINES ±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±³³ You can type in lower case or capital letters - it doesn't matter. Nor ³³ do you have to capitalize the 1st letter in a sentence, title, etc. Use the ³³ style that's easiest and most comfortable. But, if you plan to print the ³³ text, it'll look better if you use capital letters in the usual places. ³³ ³³±±±±±±± Pro~Scribe must be able to count: Words, Sentences & Syllables ±±±±±±±³³ It counts words by looking for the space after each word. ³³ "Sentences" are end-of-sentence marks (.!?;) followed by a space. ³³ It "estimates" the number of syllables by examining vowels. ³³ Where possible, avoid punctuation in abbreviations ('Dr.') Periods followed ³³ by a space count as sentences. Hyphenated words and numbers count as 1 word.³³ ³³±±±±±±±±± You Control The Analyses (PS' manual explains how) ±±±±±±±±±³³ *Edit Wasted.Wrd: Add phrases you want PS to watch for, your own Word Wasters³³ *Any WORD starting with an asterisk (*) counts as a 1-syllable word regard- ³³ less of its actual length. PS asks "Which Drive?" ³³ - Press ENTER see files on the current drive/directory. ³³ - Otherwise, enter a drive letter (A, B, C, etc.) then enter a directory. ³³ - PS then asks "Which Files?" Press ENTER to see all files. Or you can ³³ ask that only certain files be displayed -- "*.DOC" or "*.TXT" ³³ ³³±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±± Pro~Scribe and My Word Processor ±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±³³ PS correctly reads text in ASCII or WordStar format ((tm) MicroPro Intl.). ³³ PS strips "control symbols" word processors (like WordStar) store in files. ³³ * If PS' "stripper" doesn't seem to work with text from your word ³³ processor, use your processor to save the text in ASCII format -- ³³ (save it with a different name). Then Import the ASCII version. ³³ ³³ * PS ignores "dot commands" used by many word processors to format printing.³³ ³³ * Words beginning with asterisks (*) are considered 1-syllable (use Search &³³ Replace). ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ´ Interpreting Pro~Scribe's Results ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿³±±Pro~Scribe helps you decide: IF your writing needs work, and WHAT to fix.±±³³ * To answer the 1st question, look at: Overall Summary, Grade Level and ³³ the Running Grade Level (RGL) and Pattern graphs ³³ * To decide WHAT to fix, look at: Avg. # Syllables/Word, Avg. # Words/Sent.³³ Percent Sesquipedalian Words, and your RGL and Pattern graphs. ³³ ³³±±PS' Guidelines are meant to be used Flexibly, with your audience in mind. ±±³³ * A Grade Level of 8-10, 15-20 words/sentence and words with an average of ³³ 1.5 syllables are 'reasonable' for most business or every-day writing. ³³ * Your average Word Length is critical. 500 words make up about 65% of ³³ everything we say, read or write!! ³³ - These 500 words average 1.3 syllables. 400 have 1-5 letters, 0 have 10!³³ - People Magazine, USA Today and the New York Times average about 1.5 ³³ syllables/word. (Kid's Books=1.3/Wall St. Jour.=1.7/Technical stuff=2) ³³±±±±±Our Goal: Effective (not Simple) Writing (PS' manual has details)±±±±³³ Simple writing and short sentences are NOT our goal.
