========================== TOPCNV Utility ===============================

If you have been with the personal computer revolution since the
"pioneer" days of CP/M and have created .TOP files with our CP/M Out-Think
or CP/M KAMAS Outline Processors, the TOPCNV Utility is included in this
release of KAMAS for you.

So, if you have .TOP topic files created by CP/M KAMAS or CP/M OUT-THINK,
you need to convert those files to the new .KAM files before you can
access or edit them with the PC/MS-DOS versions of KAMASOFT products.
Here is how to install and use the TOPCNV utility.

HERE ARE THE STEPS FOR DOS FLOPPY DISK SYSTEMS:

1) Make a DOS system disk and copy the file TOPCNV.COM to it. Format a
blank DOS disk.

2) Copy the .TOP file to the DOS system disk with TOPCNV.COM on it.
You may need a disk utility program like UNIFORM to copy .TOP files
from your CP/M disks to DOS disks. Also, the .TOP file must be less
than 250K in size. If the .TOP file is larger, break it up before
converting it using your CP/M outline processor to COPY EXTRACT
branches into smaller .TOP files.

3) Place the DOS system disk containing the TOPCNV.COM file and the
.TOP file in Drive A and the blank, formatted DOS disk in Drive B.

4) Enter the command:

TOPCNV A:MYFILE.TOP B:

to convert the .TOP file on drive A to a .KAM file on drive B. The
.KAM file will have the same name as the .TOP file; only its extension
will differ. You must include the .TOP extension in the file spec.

5) When the conversion is done, the .KAM file on drive B is ready for
use under the DOS version of KAMAS.

These steps assume you are converting a single .TOP file. If you have
more than one .TOP file, copy as many of them as will fit on drive A at
one time during Step 2 and repeat Step 4 for each .TOP file that you
copied. Then, if you still have more .TOP files, repeat the entire
procedure with another set of disks until you have converted all your
.TOP files. After you finish the conversion, you don't need the DOS
disks with the .TOP files anymore.

HERE ARE THE STEPS FOR DOS HARD DISK SYSTEMS:

1) Make a conversion subdirectory on your hard disk. At the root
directory, enter this command:

C>MD TOPCNV

2) Copy the TOPCNV.COM file to that subdirectory from the distribution
disk:

C>COPY A:TOPCNV.COM

3) Copy all .TOP files to the conversion subdirectory. You may need a
disk utility program like UNIFORM to copy .TOP files from your CP/M
disks to the hard disk.

4) For each .TOP file that you are going to convert, enter the command:

TOPCNV MYFILE.TOP

Both the .TOP file and the .KAM file will be in the conversion
subdirectory. The .KAM file will have the same name as the .TOP file;
only its extension will differ. You must include the .TOP extension in
the file specification.

5) When the conversion is done, the .KAM files are ready for use under
the DOS version of KAMAS. Just copy/move them to your KAMAS
subdirectory. After you finish the conversion, you don't need the .TOP
files on your hard disk anymore and you can delete them. In fact, you
can delete the entire subdirectory after you copy your .KAM files to
the KAMAS subdirectory.

If all your .TOP files won't fit on the hard disk at the same time,
copy as many as will fit and repeat these instructions later for the
other ones. After you have converted the first batch, you can delete
the .TOP files and free up room for the next batch. You need enough
free space to create the new .KAM files on the hard disk as well. The
free space on the hard disk should be at least equal to the combined
total sizes of all the .TOP files, e.g., if your .TOP files total to
300K, you need at least 300K free on the hard disk.
