==== WELCOME to the KAMAS (tm) Outline Processing System! ====

The contents of this help file, HELP.KAM is COPYRIGHT (C) 1987 by KAMASOFT,

KAMAS is a member of a new genre of personal productivity software called
Outline Processing. KAMAS lets you create and manipulate text outlin es
using the power of your personal computer. The outlines contain what can be
thought of as structured text, which is
kept in special files called outline
files. Outline files are internally organized in a familiar outline form.
KAMAS lets you create and modify outline files and it lets you traverse and
modify the structured text within them. KAMAS is aware of the outline
structure of your outlines and presents the structure to you through an
interactive full-screen ou
tline editor.

There are two major areas in which you control KAMAS: the File Manager
and the Outline Editor. These two areas are closely integrated.

The File Manager allows you to Prepare new Outlines and to Delete existing
ones. In addition, it provides utilities to manage the Outlines on your
disks.

The Outline Editor lets you edit both the structure and the text content of
outlines. This is the heart of KAMAS. The Outline Editor provides a rich
variety of commands to Insert, Move, Copy, Delete, Show, Input, Format,
Output, Search, and Retrieve outlines.

In addition to all the commands for editing the outline structure, there are
two parts of the Outline Editor for editing the text content of your
outlines: the Title Editor and the Text Editor.

The Title Editor lets you edit the text in outline titles. The Text Editor
lets you edit the optional paragraphs of text (up to 32,680 characters) that
you can attach to each title in the outline. Both editors are interactive,
full screen editors.

You can learn KAMAS quickly since lots of help is provided. In fact, you
only have to learn three keys as a doorway to using the system:

- pressing F1 throughout KAMAS gives you context sensitive help from
this online help file
- pressing F2 starts the comprehensive menu system
- pressing ESC exits from whatever you are doing

With the menu system, you can start out quickly. You don't have to learn
lots of commands to take full advantage of KAMAS's features. As you use the
menus, press the F1 key at any time for context sensitive help. In addition
to providing help on each menu choice, the help screens also show you the
fast keys that bypass the menu to accomplish each command. That way, the
help system doubles as a training system letting you gradually learn the
direct commands while you use the menus to get your work done. Stick with
the menus or switch to the direct commands -- the choice is always yours.

When you are not using the menu system, pressing F1 gives you a help screen
on all the fast keys that are available. You never have to wonder what keys
to press.

And, if something goes wrong, the third level of the help system comes into
play giving you a complete diagnostic mes sage listing possible causes for the
error and corrective actions you can take.

Add all this help to the 200 page User!'s Guide that comes complete with a
reference section, reference cards, and a tutorial matched to the Demo
outline file". Learning KAMAS is a snap.

And using it is easy too. With the direct commands (fast keys), you can
accomplish any# function in just a few keystrokes. Many of the direct
commands are single key presses on the main keyboard, so the com$mands are
responsive and easy to type. The result is optimal control and ease of use.

A%ERROR HELP SCREENS (08@ÿÿ‡³LNThe Error help messages in this branch are automatically shown to you when
you type Y at the MORE HELP? prompt. This prompt appears after any error
condition that KAMAS detects.

A.ÿGENERAL ERRORS (08@ÿÿ‡"LNA/ ABORT: Normal operation intentionally aborted (08@ÿÿ‡ARLN ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
Typing CTRL-C at certain points throughout KAMAS causes the current command
to terminate with the ABORT error. Here are some cases where you can ABORT
a command:
- In the Text Editor: typing CTRL-C in the Menu system, typing CTRL-C at
the Replace command "Yes No All" prompt
- In the Outline Editor: typing CTRL-C at the Delete Stem command
"Yes No" prompt, typing CTRL-C at the Lo okup command "Candidate Found"
prompt
- During the File Manager Copy File or Outline Editor Outfile commands:

typing CTRL-C at the "Exists! Overwrite?" prompt
- At any prompt that requires a single Y or N response (e.g., [ More]?,
[Edit]? or [Ready]? prompts): typing CTRL-C
- Almost anywhere during KAMAS: typing CTRL-BREAK
 ---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Use this error to intentionally abort a co
mmand if you change your mind and
don't want to do the command. If you aborted unintentionally, you must
restart the aborted operation.
A! BADPARAM: Bad parameter entered (08@ÿÿ‡UWLN ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have entered an out-of-range value as a parameter for a command that
requires a value in a certain range. For example:
- During Title Edit: Entered title must be non-blank.
- During Ruler Line editing: Wrap margin must be > 16; characters other
than T, W, or space are not allowed.
- During the Divide command in the Text Editor: Cursor must be on a
non-blank line, which is used as the new title of the divided text.
- During the Go to Bin command: Specified Bin number must be from 1 to 9.
- During Printer Init editing: Each number must be a decimal value from
0 - 255; each number must be separated by a space from the next one.
- During Assign User command: Entered User name must be non-blank.
- During Format Setup Menu: Page size must be from 20 to 65535; Right
Margin must be 32-128; Left Margin must be 0-95; Right Margin minus Left
Margin must be > 32; Section Number Depth must be 0-16; Line Spacing
must be > 0; Outfile Control must be A, W, S, or P; Section Number Type
must be R, P, or B.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Check the parameters you gave to make sure that they fall within the correct
range for the command you were attempting.
A$ NOTFOUND: Item was not found (08@ÿÿ‡!ÁLN ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
- During Search or Search/Replace in the Text Editor, the Find command,
or the Lookup command, the search string was not found. Note that
these searches ignore case when comparing for a match.
- During the Jump to outline command, the outline name you specified
  was not found.
- During the file read in commands (Infile or Insert File), the filename
you specified was !not found.
- During the Assign Path command, the subdirectory you specified was not
found.
- During the Fla"shcard Quiz command, the outline file was not setup
correctly for a quiz.
---------------------------------- ACTI#ON -----------------------------------
Check for typos in the search strings you specified. Use the Show Directory
command (F2 S D) to verify filenames. Use the File Manager or the Show
Outlines command to verify the outline name.
A(%" NOPRINTER: Printer not available (08@ÿÿ‡E^LN& ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
During any print command, KAMAS detected 'that the printer was powered
off, disconnected, offline, or out of paper.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Correct the problem with the printer and restart the failed print command.
A$) SYSTEM: Internal system error (08@ÿÿ ‡#7LN* ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
KAMAS detected an internal error in itsel+f or in the operating system.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Try exiting, KAMAS normally and resetting or rebooting your computer. Try
running diagnostic programs on your computer's memory, CP-U, and disk
controllers. Try copying a fresh version of DOS and KAMAS onto your disk.
If you are unable to confirm a specific problem, yet this error recurs,
call the KAMASOFT technical support line.
Aq/ÿEDITING ERRORS (08@ÿÿ‡"LNA8.0? NOBIN: Destination bin was not assigned or does not now exist (08@ÿÿ‡A¹LN1 ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You attempted to Move to a Bin number (F22 A M B or M B) or Go to a Bin
number (F2 G B or G B), but the number you specified is not currently
assigned. The Outl3ine Editor unmark command (F2 M C or CTRL--) unmarks all
marked titles and clears all assigned bins. Hiding a bin, or e4diting another
outline (e.g., with the Jump or Lookup commands), or exiting to the File
Manager are additional commands5 that clear any assigned bins. Going to a bin
and typing F2 M 0 (or just going to a bin and typing 0) clears its bin
n6umber.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Use the Outline Editor Show Status7 command (F2 S S) to show the current bin
assignments. Go to a title and type F2 M followed by a number from 1 thru 9
(or just go to a title and type a number from 1 thru 9) to assign the
specified bin number to that title.
AE/.9A BADSELECT: Invalid or no source selected for a marked operation (08@ÿÿ‡‘LN: ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
On an Outline Editor Marked operation, KA;MAS could not find a valid source:
- During a Move Gather, Copy Gather, Delete Marked, Print Marked, or
Outfile< Marked command, no stems were marked.
- During the Text Editor Template command (F2 U T), no titles were marked.
= - During a Copy Down/Next/Join or a Move Down/Next, either no branch was
marked or more than one stem was marked w>ith the Tag command.
- During a branch copy across outline files, either no branch was marked
or more than one ?stem was marked with the Tag command.
- During the Alternate command (F2 G A or A), no alternate was marked.
-------@--------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Make sure you mark/tag titles before you do a marAk/gather command or the
Template command. Make sure you mark only one branch (F2 M S or F3) before
doing a Copy Down/NBext/Join or a Move Down/Next. If copying across outline
files, make sure that you mark only one source branch. Only CoCpy Down and
Copy Next work across outline file boundaries. Try to do the copy after a
minimum of intervening commands Dsince some operations may clear pending
marks, e.g., the File Manager Prepare, Copy Cleanup, Delete, and Assign
commands and the Outline Editor Copy Extract, Edit Uplift, Edit Downlift,
Reveal, and Hide commands.
AM8.F4 TOPVIOL: Attempt to violate top of current outline (08@ÿÿ‡XJLNG ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have attempted to delete, move next tHo, copy next to, or insert next to
the top of the outline. KAMAS depends on and preserves the logic of your
outlines. I There can be only one top of each outline, and it cannot be
deleted nor can other items be on the same level as the topJ.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
If you want to rename the outline file,K edit the top title in the Outline
Editor (F2 E T or F6) or use the rename command (F2 E R or F6) in the File
Manager. L If you are trying to delete the outline file, use the Delete
command in the File Manager (F2 U D or F5 or DEL). If the branch you are
editing is uplifted, try re-editing back to the top of the outline with
the Edit Downlift command.
ATE.N: TREEINVERT: Attempt to move or copy a branch into itself (08@ÿÿ‡HÈLNO ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have tried to move or copy a branch tPo a location within itself. KAMAS
depends on and preserves the logic of your outlines and prevents any
operation that Qwould corrupt the outline logic. The Move Down, Move Next,
Copy Down, and Copy Next commands affect an entire branch, aRnd it is not
possible to move or copy a branch into itself.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------S------------------
Try to break up the branch using Move Left or Move Right commands before
attempting the branch operation. In other words, break up the branch into
two separate branches and move or copy one into the other.
A_M.U2 TREELOST: Invalid linkage in outline encountered (08@ÿÿ‡W}LNV ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
KAMAS has detected an invalid linkage in Wthe structure of your outline. The
data in your outline file has somehow been damaged and KAMAS cannot follow
the outlXine structure. The disk media may be damaged or there may be a
hardware problem in your computer.
--------------------Y-------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Check for bad disk media. Make sure that you do not remove diZskettes prior
to normally exiting KAMAS. If you wish to change diskettes while remaining
in KAMAS, use the Assign New [disk command (F2 A N) in the File Manager
**BEFORE** you change any disks. Also, do not reset your computer during
KAM\AS operation. Try copying portions of the damaged outline to another
outline file; sometimes you can recover most of th]e damaged outline in this
way by copying until you reach the bad part of the file and then doing
another copy starting^ after the bad part of the file. If this error
happened when you typed Y at the "MORE HELP?" prompt, then replace file
HELP.KAM with a new copy from the KAMAS Master System Disk.
AiT.`, NOROOM: Out of room during outline editing (08@ÿÿ‡YLNa ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
NOROOM can occur in two cases:
- whenb there is not enough memory to reveal any more titles. KAMAS can
reveal up to 64K of titles at once (i.e., about 6c4,000 characters).
- when you try to reveal more than 31 levels deep. KAMAS indents 2 spaces
on the screen ford each level of depth. It prevents operations that
would extend display indentation beyond what can be sensibly shoewn on
the screen.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Try hiding titlesf that you are not currently working on to free up enough
memory to reveal the titles that you want to view. Or try usingg the Edit
Uplift (F2 E U or E U) command in the Outline Editor to edit a branch and
reduce the scope of titles displayhed. If you are editing an outline with
titles more than 31 levels deep, try to Edit Uplift somewhere between the
top title and the deep level to reduce the scope of titles displayed.
A_.j/ LEAFFULL: Text leaf is full or would overflow (08@ÿÿ‡LNk ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have exceeded the size of the leaf telxt (a maximum of 32,680 characters).
You may be typing characters into a nearly full leaf, or pasting text from
the climpboard into a leaf, or attempting to Copy Join two stems. In the last
two cases, the text is not added to the leaf, sinnce it would cause the leaf
to overflow if it were added.
---------------------------------- ACTION --------------------o---------------
Make the leaf shorter before attempting to paste text into it or join text to
it. You can use the Textp Editor Divide command (F2 U D) to divide the leaf
into two separate stems. The percent full is shown on the Text Editor
status line so you can gauge when you are about to overflow the leaf.
A·.rÿOUTLINE CONTEXT ERRORS (08@ÿÿ‡LNA|qs BADONAME: Bad outline name (08@ÿÿ‡úLNt ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have specified an invalid outline namue when attempting to:
- Edit an outline with the Jump to outline command
- Create an outline with the File Manager vPrepare or Copy Cleanup commands
or with the Outline Editor Copy Extract command
The outline name you specified wasw either a null string (i.e., you pressed
Enter without typing a name) or it contained no legal DOS filename
characters.x Spaces, *, ?, =, :, ", |, \, [, ], +, <, >, ,, and _ are
illegal, so if the outline name contains only these characterys, it is not a
valid outline name. A valid outline name can contain an optional drive
spec (e.g., C:) followed by a 31z-character name and must contain at least
one legal filename character.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----{------------------------------
Check the outline name you entered for typos. If you are including a drive
spec, make sure it was a single character followed by a colon.
A‰rq}C DUPONAME: Attempt to create an outline with a duplicate file name (08@ÿÿ‡"3lLN~ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
In attempting to create a new outline or rename an outline, you have
specified a duplicate outline name. Duplicate file names on the same disk
drive are not al€lowed by the operating system. Operations that create new
outlines include the File Manager Prepare, Copy Cleanup, and Copy File
commands and the Outline Editor Copy Extract command. You can rename an
outline with the File Manager rename‚ command (F2 E R or F6) or by editing the
top title in the Outline Editor (F2 E T or F6).
-----------------------------ƒ----- ACTION -----------------------------------
If you are creating a new outline, specify a different outline name or
„ specify a different drive to avoid the conflict. You can precede outline
names with an optional drive spec (e.g., C:).… With the File Manager Copy
File command, you only specify a drive, so make sure to specify a destination
drive that i†s different from the drive containing the file you are backing
up. Only the first 8 significant characters (excluding s‡paces, *, ?, =, :,
", |, \, [, ], +, <, >, ,, and _) are used to distinguish outline names.
So make sure that the outlˆine name you specify differs from all others on
the same drive within the first 8 significant characters. Try another
outline name that is different in the first 8 characters.
A•|qŠ= ENTRYLOCK: Attempted unauthorized Entry of a locked outline (08@ÿÿ‡#LN‹ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have attempted to access an outline tŒhat is Entry Locked. KAMAS outlines
can be protected from unauthorized use in two ways. First, they can be
protected from being entered by unauthorized users. Second, they can be
protected from unauthorized modification. Entry locking Žis the strongest
protection. If you are not logged on with the correct user name and
password, you cannot access an Entry Locked outline. This means you cannot:
- Mark the outline as part of the search context or delete it
- Edit the outline with the Jump or Lookup commands, the File
Manager edit command (F2 E O or ENTER)
- Read the outlin‘e with the File Manager Show Query, Show View,
Spacebar, or Query commands
- Run any Flashcard commands using t’he outline
Since you cannot edit the file, you cannot print it or modify it in any way.
-------------------------------“--- ACTION -----------------------------------
Use the File Manager F2 A U command to log on as the current user with th”e
correct name and password to gain access to the locked outline. You must
remember your name and password if you decide to use security since there is
no way for KAMAS to show you user names and passwords on locked files.
A¢‰q–E MODIFYLOCK: Attempted unauthorized Modification of a locked outline (08@ÿÿ‡‡LN— ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You have attempted to modify an outline t˜hat is Modify Locked. KAMAS
outlines can be protected from unauthorized use in two ways. First, they
can be protected™ from being entered by unauthorized users. Second, they
can be protected from unauthorized modification. Modify lockinšg is a read
only protection. If you are not logged on with the correct user name and
password, you cannot change a Mod›ify Locked outline. This means you cannot:
- Delete the outline or change its lock level
- Rename the outline, eœdit its titles, or edit its leaf-text
- Do any structure editing commands or copy part of the outline to itself
- Save changes on the Format Setup Menu
You can, however, enter the Outline Editor with the Jump or Lookup commands,
or žthe File Manager edit command (F2 E O or ENTER). In the Outline Editor,
you can Show, Print, or Outfile the outline. OŸr you can Copy the outline to
another outline which you can then modify.
---------------------------------- ACTION --- --------------------------------
Use the File Manager F2 A U command to log on as the current user with the
correct nam¡e and password to gain complete access to the locked outline. You
must remember your name/password if you decide to use security since there is
no way for KAMAS to show you the passwords on locked files.
Aª•q£ OCEMPTY: Outline context empty (08@ÿÿ‡DLN¤ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
In the File Manager, you have tried to un¥mark the last remaining marked
outline (F2 M U or -), or you tried to delete the only marked outline file
(F2 U D or F5¦ or DEL). At least one outline must remain marked at all
times. With KAMAS you can work with a family of outlines. Th§is family is
called the outline search context and you exclude marked outlines from the
search context by 'unmarking' o¨r 'untagging' them in the File Manager.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
©Go to an unmarked outline file in the File Manager and press F2 M T or
press F3 to mark it before you try to unmark or delete the current outline.
Solid triangles indicate marked outlines; empty triangles indicate unmarked
ones.
A¢q« OCFULL: Outline context full (08@ÿÿ‡sLN¬ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
You attempted to mark or tag an outline when the maximum number (32 outlines)
were already marked for searching in the current context. In addition to
the File® Manager Mark command (F2 M T or F3), any operation that creates or
edits an outline automatically marks that outline:
¯ - Preparing a new outline file with the File Manager Prepare or Copy Cleanup
commands; the Outline Editor Copy Extra°ct also marks the new outline.
- Editing an outline with the Jump or Lookup commands, the File Manager
edit command±, a Y response to the [Edit]? prompt when reading through
the outlines in the File Manager, or the File Manager Renam²e command.
All mark the newly edited outline.
With KAMAS you can work with a family of outlines. This family is cal³led the
outline context and outlines are added to the context by 'marking' or
'tagging' them.
------------------------´---------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Go to a marked outline and use the File Manager unmark command (F2µ M U or -)
to unmark it; or use the Clear All command (F2 M C or CTRL--) to clear the
current context and restore KAMAS¶ to its initial state with a single marked
outline. Either way, you make room to mark new outlines. Solid triangles
indicate marked outlines; empty triangles indicate unmarked ones.
Aq¸ÿDISK AND FILE ERRORS (08@ÿÿ‡LNA·¹ BADFNAME: Bad file name (08@ÿÿ)‡"7 LNº ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
In the Outline Editor Outfile commands or» file read-in commands (Infile or
Insert File), you have specified an illegal character for the DOS filename or
extensi¼on. The filename can be in the form C:FILENAME.EXT with an optional
drive spec followed by a 1-8 character filename fol½lowed by a 1-3 character
extension, e.g., B:MYFILE.TXT. It cannot contain any illegal characters
(spaces, *, ?, =, :, ¾", |, \, [, ], +, <, >, ,, and _). No subdirectory
paths are allowed. BADFNAME can also mean an invalid or non-existen¿t drive
specification (e.g., when you are backing up files with the File Manager
Copy File command). You cannot specifÀy .KAM as a file extension.
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
Check the filÁe specification for typos. Use the Assign Path command in the
File Manager to change to another subdirectory on a drive if you need to
Outfile to or read-in from another subdirectory.
A̸·Ã: BADDRIVE: Invalid drive specified or drive not available (08@ÿÿ‡ LNÄ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
During the File Manager Assign Path or CoÅpy File commands, you typed a
non-existent or illegal drive spec. During the Copy File command, you typed
a destinatioÆn drive that was the same as the source file's drive. During any
file operation, you typed a non-existent or illegal drÇive spec as the
optional prefix to the outline name or filename specified. During almost
any file operation when the dÈrive specified does exist, but KAMAS detected
that the drive door was open, the drive was offline, no floppy disk was inÉ
the drive, or the drive was otherwise unavailable.
---------------------------------- ACTION -------------------------Ê----------
Check the drive spec for typos and make sure the drive you specified exists
in your system, e.g., if you speËcified a RAM disk, make sure you have loaded
the necessary RAM disk software. DO NOT REMOVE DISKETTES WHILE KAMAS IS
RUNNING UNLESS YOU USE THE FILE MANAGER F2 A N (NEWDISK) COMMAND.
AÙ·Í$ DISKFULL: Destination disk is full (08@ÿÿ‡8‡LNÎ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
During a command that creates a new outliÏne file, adds text to an existing
outline file, or creates a new text file, KAMAS detected that there was no
more free Ðspace available on the disk drive. When DISKFULL occurs during:
- The File Manager Prepare or Copy Cleanup commands Ñor the Outline Editor
Copy Extract command, the Partial File is deleted
- The Copy File command, the Partial FiÒle is deleted
- Any Outfile command, the Partial File is NOT deleted
- Any operation that writes part of an outliÓne (e.g, the Outline Editor
Infile, Insert File, or Copy commands or the Text Editor F2 U S or F2 Q
commands)Ô, the partial outline is NOT deleted
---------------------------------- ACTION -----------------------------------
BreaÕk up your files onto separate disks, so that you will have room to
expand. Use the Show Status command (F2 S S) to showÖ the amount of free
space available on your drives. On floppy disk systems, try to leave about
half the space on each ×disk free for expansion and for Outfile operations.
Thus, on floppy systems, when your outline file approaches 200K, CoØpy Extract
a portion of it and start a new diskette. If you have finished outline files
that are below 50% full, use the Copy Cleanup command in the File Manager to
recover more free space on the disk.
AÌ·Ú/ WPROTECT: Destination disk is write protected (08@ÿÿ‡ [LNÛ ---------------------------------- CAUSE ------------------------------------
KAMAS attempted to write to a floppy diskÜ and found that it was write
protected, i.e., a write protect tab was on the diskette. WPROTECT can occur
during any fÝile operation, e.g.:
- when creating a new outline with the File Manager Prepare command
- when using the OutlineÞ Editor Outfile commands
- when reading in text to an outline with the Outline Editor Infile or
Insert File comßmands
- when copying outlines or parts of outlines with the Outline Editor Copy
commands or with the File Managàer Copy commands
- when saving text with the Text Editor F2 U S or F2 Q commands
---------------------------------- áACTION -----------------------------------
Remove the write protect tab from disks containing KAMAS outlines that you
want to edit.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
