LEGAL STUFF

Software License

DEDIT.EXE is not and has never been public domain software, nor is it free
software. Non-Licensed users are granted a limited license to use DEDIT
for 30 days on a trial basis for the purpose of determining whether DEDIT is
suitable for thier needs. The use Dedit, except for initial 30-day trial,
requires registration. The use of unlicensed copies of DEDIT by any person,
business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is strictly
prohibited.

A single user license permits a user to use DEDIT only on a single computer.
Licensed users may use the program on different computers, but may not use
the program on more than one computer at the same time.

No one may modify or patch the DEDIT executable files in any way, including
but not limit to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering
the program. A limited license is granted to copy and distribute DEDIT only
for the trial use of others, subject to the above limitations, and also the
following.

1. DEDIT must be copied in unmodified form, complete with the file
containing this license information.
2. DEDIT may not be distributed with any other product without a
specific license from Programing Solutions to do so.
3. No fee, charge, or other compensation may be reqeusted or accepted,
except as outlined below.
A. Operators of Electronic Bullitin Board Systems (Sysops) may make
DEDIT available for downloading only as long as the above con-
ditions are met. An overall or time-dependant charge for the use
of the BBS is permitted as long as there is not a specific charge
for the download of DEDIT.
B. Vendors of user supported or shareware software may distribute
DEDIT subject to the above conditions, without specific permis-
sion. Vendors may charge a disk duplication and handling fee,
which may not exceed ten dollars.

Limited Warranty

Programing Solutions guarantees your satisfaction with this product for a
period of 90 days from the date of original purchase. If you are unsatisfied
with DEDIT within that time period, return the package in saleable condition

for a full refund. Programing Solutions warrants that all disk provided are
free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming normal use, for a
period of 90 days from the original date of purchase. Programing Solutions

the product is found, the purchaser may return the product for a full refund.
In no event will such a refund exceed the purchase price of the product.

EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, PROGRAMING SOLUTIONS DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES,

DEDIT - Installation

To install DEDIT simply create a directory called DEDIT, then copy the
contents of this file to that directory. To run DHELP, you must be in
the /DEDIT directory.

NOTE: To be able to invoke DEDIT from any directory, you must include \DEDIT
in the PATH statement in you AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

DEDIT - Instructions

DEDIT COMPONENTS:

There are three basic components of DEDIT: the menu bar at the top,
the desktop, and the status line at the bottom.


Menu Bar:

The menu bar is your primary access to all the menu commands. When
the menu bar is active, the currently selected menu will be high-
lighted.

Choosing commands from the keyboard:

1. Press F10. This makes the menu bar active.

2. Use the arrow keys to select the menu you want displayed, then
press ENTER.

NOTE: You can also press the highlighted letter of the menu title.
For example, from the menu bar, press E to quickly display the
Edit Menu. From anywhere else, press Alt and the highlighted
letter to display the menu you want.

3. Use the arrow keys again to select the command you want. Then
press ENTER.

NOTE: Again, as a shortcut, you can just press the highlighted
letter to choose your command once the menu is displayed.

Choosing commands with a mouse:

1. Click the desired menu title to display the menu.

2. Click the desired command.


NOTE: Some menu commands are unavailable when it wouldn't be appropiate to
use them. For example, you cannot "save" a file if you do not have a
file open!

THE FILE WINDOW:

Most of what you see in DEDIT occurs in a window. A window is a
screen area that you can move, resize, zoom, tile, overlap, close,
and open. You can have any number of windows open (limited only by
the conventional memory of your machine), but only one window can
be active at any given time. The active window is the one that
your currently working in. Any command you choose or text you type
generally applies only to the active window.

DEDIT makes it easy to spot the active window by placing a double-
lined border around it. The active window also has a close box,
a zoom box, scroll bars, and a resize corner. If your windows are
overlapping, the active window is always on top. An Edit Window
also displays the current line and column numbers in the lower
left corner. If you've modified your file, an * will appear to the
left of the column and line numbers.

WINDOW MANAGEMENT:

Open an Edit Window Choose File|Open to open a file and display it in
a window, or press F3.

Open other windows Choose the desired option from the accessory menu.

Close a window Choose Window|Close, press Alt-F3, or click the
window's close box.

Activate a window Click anywhere in the window, or choose Window|Next
until you arrive at the desired menu, press F6 until
you arrive at the desired menu, (Window|Previous and
Alt-F6 cycles though windows in reverse).

Move the active Drag its title bar with the mouse, or press Ctrl-F5
window (Window|Size/Move) and use the arrow keys to place
the window where you want it, then press ENTER.

Resize the active Drag the resize corner with your mouse, or press
window Ctrl-F5 (Window|Size/Move) and press SHIFT while
using the arrow keys to resize the window.

Zoom the active Click the windows zoom box, Double-Click the windows
window Title-Bar, choose Window|Zoom, or press F5.

NOTE: All windows ( File Dialogs, Accessory, Edit windows, etc..),
can be closed by pressing "ALT-F3" or by clicking the window
close box.




THE STATUS BAR:

The Status Bar appears at the bottom of the screen; its
function is to:

þ remind you of basic keystrokes and shortcuts

þ let you click on the shortcuts to carry out the action
instead of choosing the command from the menu or
pressing the shortcut keystroke.

dialog box for you to select a file to edit.

The dialog box contains an input box, a file list, and buttons
labeled Open, and Cancel. You can perform any of these actions.

þ Type in a full FileName including extension and choose open by
"TABing" to the Open Button or just press ENTER. You can exit
without choosing a file by "pressing" the Cancel button. ( If
you enter a filename that DEDIT doesn't find, DEDIT will create
it and open it for editing! )

þ Type FileName using wildcards ('*' or '?'), which filters the
file list to match your specifications.

þ View the contents of another directory by selecting the directory
from the file list box.

The File List Box display all file names in the current directory
that matches the specifications in the input box. Press "TAB" until
the list box name is highlighted. You can now use the "Arrow" Keys
to select a file name, and the press ENTER to open it. ( You might
have to use "Arrow" Keys to 'Scroll' contents of the list box in
order to see all of the file names. )

To open a file with the mouse, simply 'Click' the file list box to
select it, then 'Double-Click' the file to open. ( You may have to
click the file list box's Scroll-Bar to find the file you are looking
for! )

File Save As: The File Save As Dialog functions the same as the
File Open Dialog except you are choosing a new
name and/or new directory to save your current
file under.

A FEW OTHER THINGS:

Command Line Options: Command Line Options are things you type after the
program command at the DOS Prompt when beginning the
program.

For example, If you type:

C:\> DEDIT SYSTEM

at the DOS Prompt and press ENTER, DEDIT will
automatically load your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
Files for editing when the program begins.

Available Command Line Options are:

þ SYSTEM - Loads your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for editing.

þ WINDOWS - Loads your WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files for editing.
(Only applicable if you are a windows user!)

þ filename.ext - Enter one or more file names with extensions and
DEDIT will open them for editing.
For example,

DEDIT README.DOC MANUAL.DOC LICENSE.DOC

would load DEDIT and open all three files listed
for editing.
