Introduction
Proteus(tm) is a communication environment for the Microsoft Windows 2.0 Operating System. Proteus functions as a full feature terminal emulator with a powerful script language and file transfer support. Or as a communication driver for other Windows applications using the Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). Since Microsoft Windows supports a form of multi-tasking, you can use Proteus to download files from your local electronic bulletin board while using other Windows applications.
Proteus provides features not found in other terminal emulators: Hardware (e.g., Graphic Display) independence, the use of the mouse to augment the cursor keys, user selectable fonts and multi-tasking abilities (due to the nature of Microsoft Windows).
Using the Proteus Communication Language (PCL) and Proteus DDE routines, complex functions can be performed using other Windows applications. For example, Microsoft Excel can use Proteus, via DDE, to automatically download stocks quotes from CompuServe (CIS) directly to an Excel spreadsheet at the touch of a key.
Proteus was written to use very little system resources (cpu & memory). Several proprietary algorithms are used to minimize overhead. This is very important for those wishing to run more that one Windows application at a time. Proteus runs fine with ten other applications loaded. During a file transfer, you may not even notice Proteus running (except for the icon keeping you informed).
Proteus follows the Windows 2.0 style guide and supports most features found in Microsoft TERMINAL program. Proteus comes with a complete set of PARAMETER files (profiles) for the most popular host systems. A fill in the blanks script language will keep most users, from even looking at a script. The powerful BASIC like script language can be customized to create complex procedures. Other features, like automatic carrier detect (CD), let Proteus determine if your modem uses the CD or not. If you want to move the cursor, why use the arrow keys? Just click on the spot using the right mouse button and the cursor control codes will be automatically generated for you. Proteus will even determine the filename entered on most RBBS's for a XMODEM file downloads, why enter it twice?
Floppy Disk Installation
Floppy disk installation is no more than copying your Proteus master diskette to a pre-formatted DOS diskette. This new copy of Proteus will then become your working copy. Make sure that you place your Proteus master diskette in a safe place.
Hard Disk Installation
Proteus permits the user to define the directories of various types of files. This feature is recommended to help keep your hard disk organized. The following sample structure assume that your Windows directory is 'WINDOWS':
C:\WINDOWS\PROTEUS.EXE Proteus .EXE file
C:\WINDOWS\PROVT102.FON Proteus VT102/VT52 fonts
C:\WINDOWS\PROTEUS\ File xfers here
C:\WINDOWS\PROTEUS\LOG\ *.LOG files here
C:\WINDOWS\PROTEUS\PCL\ *.PCL files here
C:\WINDOWS\PROTEUS\PRO\ *.PRO files here
A batch file, harddisk.bat, is included to install Proteus on to a hard disk system. To use, perform the following:
type 'cd \windows'
type 'a:harddisk'
Once you have Proteus loaded to your hard disk, make sure that you place your Proteus master diskette in a safe place.
Concepts
The Windows environment is different from the MS-DOS environment. Microsoft Windows is multi-tasking, thus different application compete for same limited resources (e.g., memory, cpu, printer, comm ports, keyboard, mouse, etc). This requires a different type of thinking than using conventional DOS programs.
Connecting to the modem and connecting to a remote computer is two different operations in Proteus. The serial ports on your computer are treated as resources and are shared with other applications. Connecting to the modem aquires a serial port to be used by Proteus. Once the serial (or comm) port has be aquired, commands can then be sent to the modem. This is very different from most other communications programs! A DOS communication program will normally take the serial ports since it's the only one program can be run in DOS at a time. When the line is disconnected, Proteus will return the serial port back to Windows to be used by other applications (including Proteus).
Connecting to a remote computer (or host) is the act of dialing a number and connecting to another computer. This activity is normally performed by all communications programs (including Proteus).
The message line (lower left corner on the Proteus Display) can contains the following values:
DISCONNECTED - Does not have serial port
CONNECTED TO MODEM - Aquired a serial port
CONNECTED TO HOST - Connected to remote computer
Proteus uses the modems Carrier Detect (CD) to determine if the modem is connected to a remote computer. Once a Carrier Detect (Connected to host) is received and then CD is lost, the serial port will be automatically disconnected and returned back to windows to be reused. If the Carrier Detect option on the modem is incorrectly set, Proteus can not determine if is connected to a remote computer and will not auto-disconnect the serial port. Your modem should be set to use true Carrier Detect (CD) and NOT always true. Use the "&C1 &D2" option for Hayes 2400 modems. You still have the option to manually disconnecting the line at anytime.
