DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it beyond the trial period, you must register.

Copyright laws apply to Shareware software products,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. The author specifically grants the
right to copy and distribute the software, either to all or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware products.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it is commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you do not use the
product, you do not pay for it.

Sample Chart Files Information

All sample files were created with an HP LaserJet IIIP printer
selected. All text uses TrueType fonts.

You can change the typeface of all symbols in a chart at the same time with
the Symbol Text Fonts command (Tool Bar button with the single "F" in it).
Select all symbols (Symbol Select All), then click the "F" button. From the
font dialog, select a typeface name that you want. If you only change that,
all other font properties will remain unchanged. You can do this with any
group of selected symbols.

*****************************************************************

Tips:

Where the Tool Bar Icons Are Defined
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each Tool Bar Icon button selects a command from the menu. To see
what commands are tied to the Tool Bar, press F1 from the main Chartist
Window. This brings up the top level Help Index for Chartist. There is
a Tool Bar Topic that you can click on, and that will tell you what you
need to know.
Printing Problems
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chartist uses a lot of different text and graphics commands for drawing
to displays and printers. Some printer drivers distributed with Windows 3.1
have bugs in them (!), causing incomplete drawing of symbols or lines at times.
We know that the HP LaserJet II series (and clones), and some HP LaserJet III
series printers can exhibit these problems. The drivers released in the
fall of 1992 and later correct the known printer driver bugs with respect
to Chartist and Chartist-2. You need to get these drivers from Microsoft.
If you have access to Compuserve, they are available in the Microsoft
Software Library. Download the file WDL.TXT for an up to date listing of
the available driver updates. You should also be able to get the latest
driver from your printer manufacturer.

*****************************************************************

Library Shapes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A common question asked is about additional shapes to those
available in the standard shape file. When you register, you get an
additional library containing over 100 shapes and arrowheads.
If you still want to "roll your own", there is a shape library technical
supplement in the user's manual that you get on registration. Creating shapes
is fairly technical, but the standard shape library provides many examples
that you can build upon.
