** Quick Start Guide **

** See NICEBOOT.DOC for a more complete guide. **
** This is a Quick Reference Sheet **

Quickly, the syntax fot NICEBOOT.SYS is:

DEVICE=[path]NICEBOOT.SYS [/b] [/cbbff] [/e(n1,n2,n3,..,nn)]

*** CASE NOT IMPORTANT ***

where the options stand for:

/b: Boot with a blank screen (background color is black unless
otherwise modified with /c)

/c: Use color bb for background, and ff for foreground (DAC index
registers, hexadecimal)

/e: enter ASCII codes n1 through nn (hexadecimal) into the keyboard
buffer (maximum: 15 characters).

Examples:

device=niceboot.sys /b (Boot with a black, blank screen)
device=niceboot.sys /c3200 /b (Boot with a green, blank screen)
device=niceboot.sys /c1ce (Boot with a regular screen with blue
background and yellow foreground)
device=niceboot.sys /e(0d,0a) (Use standard defaults, but send a CR,LF
sequence to the keyboard buffer)
device=niceboot.sys (Use all standard defaults)

The syntax for DoneBoot is:

DONEBOOT pathname (pathname is the path and name of
NICEBOOT.SYS)

For example,

DONEBOOT C:\DOS\NICEBOOT.SYS

******************************************************************************

Basically, you execute NICEBOOT at the beginning of device drivers to hide,
and you execute DONEBOOT in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file at the end of TSRs and other
executables to deactivate NICEBOOT.

The pathname option of DONEBOOT is NOT optional.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
