GETTING INTRODUCED

* ABOUT THIS MANUAL

Since EZ CO*DE is meant to make your life simpler, we'll try to keep this
manual simple too; telling you just what you need to know. After you have
"tinkered" around with it for a while, the auto help lines in the program
will be all you'll need. BE SURE TO READ THE WARNINGS ON MOVING FILES.

* WHAT IS EZ CO*DE?

EZ CO*DE is a shareware computer shell program which, when used with a
compatible archiving utility, provides the user with a menu driven multiple
choice method of enjoying archiver benefits; including efficient use of
valuable disk space and cost/time savings with telecommunications.

EZ CO*DE allows simple file COmpression/DEcompression or more sophisticated
tasks, if your situation calls for them. EZ CO*DE supports .ZIP, .LZH, .PAK,
.ARC, .SDN, .ARJ, and .ZOO files, along with their self extraction (.EXE)
counterparts (with the exception of .ZOO where self extraction files can be
created but not manipulated).

* WHAT IS NEEDED TO RUN EZ CO*DE ?

You must have one of the following archiving programs. To use the features
of Self Extraction, Recursion and/or Fixing for some of the archiving
programs you will also need the programs shown in the following table. They
can be attained from the combination of GENIE, COMPUSERVE AND PCLINK.
These programs must be installed in a directory in your path.

EZ CO*DE SUPPORTS ALL OF THESE METHODS.

* None means the option is included in the archive program.
* N/A means the option is not supported by EZ CO*DE.

EZ CO*DE will run on any IBM compatible XT/AT computer using DOS 2.1 and
higher and supports any Microsoft compatible mouse. It requires about 235K
of working memory, plus memory for your archiving utility. It is desirable
to have a hard disk drive but you can use either a 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" floppy
drive. EZ CO*DE supports CGA, EGA or VGA. Hercules is not supported.

GETTING INSTALLED

Simply put a copy of EZCODE.EXE in a directory in your path. You may change
the name to suit your needs (ie EC.EXE). Be sure the archive programs you
wish to use are also located in your path. To run type .

NOTE : EZCODE makes and removes a directory called $E in the root directory
of the startup drive to view compressed files.

GETTING ACQUAINTED

When your main screen appears that is all you'll have to deal with. First,
notice the top Cyan (blue/green) bar. It looks like this :

Extract Add Move Delete Remark List SFX Misc Sort File Disk CPF

This will be refered to as the main menu. NOTE : CPF is an abbreviation for
'Compression File'.

At the very bottom is another blue/green bar which looks like this.

Now, lets try it out.

- MOUSE USERS - (Keyboard users, see next section)

"Click" refers to the left mouse button, the only button used with EZ CO*DE.

Move the mouse over "Extract" on the main menu and click. You will see a
pop-up menu listing the choices for extraction. Do not be concerned with the
choices just now. Note the help line at the bottom telling you what the
highlighted choice will do when executed. Move the mouse down the menu to
the next choice and click. Again notice the auto help line.

Now, move the mouse over "Add" on the main menu and click. Examine each item
as you did before. Do this with the remaining main menu items. When you are
finished move the mouse outside the popup menu and click to cancel.

Easy so far ? It doesn't get any worse.

Next, notice the dark blue bar where the clock is. This displays the current
directory; the one you entered the program from. This will change as you
will see later. Below that on the left is a window named "DIRECTORY". Here
you see all the files in the current directory. This window is highlighted
indicating that it is the active window.

Move the mouse over the down direction arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar
in the "DIRECTORY" window and click to scroll down the list. As you do so,
notice that the path of each file is displayed in the dark blue bar next to
the bottom. Clicking the mouse in the scroll bar area above and below the
file marker causes the window to page up and down respectively. You can also
highlight any item in the window by moving the mouse over it and clicking.

PAGE 3

Now move the mouse into the "CPF" window area, that is the area to the right
of the "DIRECTORY" window, and click to highlight it. This is where your
list of compressed files will appear later. If you need to exit the program,
move the mouse over at the bottom and click.

- KEYBOARD USERS -

Press . You will see a pop-up menu for the first main menu choice
"Extract". Do not be concerned with the choices just now. Note the help line
at the bottom telling you what the highlighted choice will do when executed
(when is pressed). Use your down direction key to highlight each
choice and notice the auto help line change. You may also use the ,
, or keys for speed.

Now, use your right direction key to move across to each main menu choice;
examine each item as you did before. When you are finished press and
your screen will be restored. Press at any time to restore your screen
and your confidence.

Now, use your down direction key to
scroll down the list. As you do so, notice that the path of each file is
displayed in the dark blue bar next to the bottom.

Now press the right direction key and the "CPF" (compression file) window
will be activated. This is where your list of compressed files will appear
later. If you need to exit the program, press .

- MOUSE AND KEYBOARD USERS -

Feel free to experiment and become acquainted. EZ CO*DE will not break. In
the unlikely event you make a "MISTAKE", there are lots of friendly error
messages to get you back on track without ruining your day. Next we will do
some serious computing.

PAGE 4

GETTING STARTED

NOTE: While this program supports all of the archivers shown on page 1, for
the sake of simplicity our tutorial will use only PKZIP, PKUNZIP and the
.ZIP extension. If you use another system, use the extension required
instead of ZIP. There will be minor differences in some of the menu items.

This section deals with a few everyday uses for a program such as this and
is in the form of a hands on tutorial. If you are already a guru, then you
may skip this and go to the section called GETTING THE PICTURE. If you are
a semi-guru, then you may want to skim it. Everyone else, read on.

* SELECTING FILES FOR COMPRESSION - STEP 1

- MOUSE USERS -

First, to enter a directory where the files you want to compress are
located, move the mouse over "Disk" on the main menu and click. Next, move
the mouse over " Change Dir ... " and click. Note, whenever a menu choice is
followed by "...", an additional prompt will appear asking for more
information. You now see a list of all the directories in the current drive.
If your choice is not in the window, scroll through the list until it is.
If your choice is not highlighted, click on it to highlight it. Once it is
highlighted, click on it again to select it. Your DIRECTORY window now
displays all the files in that directory.

If the DIRECTORY window is not highlighted move the mouse to the DIRECTORY
window side and click to highlight it. Now, move the mouse over a filename.
If the filename is not highlighted, then click to highlight it. Once the
file is highlighted, click on it to tag (select) it. You can also click on
at the bottom to tag the highlighted file. An asterisk will appear
in the "TAG" column confirming the file has been chosen. You can select any
number of files in this manner. They can be consecutive or random. If you
need to DE-select a tagged choice, move the mouse over that filename and
click to highlight it. Then either click on it again or move the mouse
over and click. Go ahead and tag any desired files. Don't worry,
your original files will be preserved as is. Now you will create a new
Compression File to store your tagged files.

* COMPRESSING SELECTED FILES - STEP 2

Move the mouse over "CPF" on the main menu and click. Next move the
mouse over "Input CPF" and double click. (The first click highlights and the
second selects). Your prompted to enter a name for the compression file. The
box shows the path of the directory you are in. If you want the Compression
file to go to that path, which you do, then just add the name for your new
Compression file (ONE THAT DOES NOT EXIST, ie TEST.ZIP). You could direct
the file to another drive and/or path by changing the path in the prompt box
(ie A:\TEST.ZIP). Now, move the mouse over " OK " and click. Notice the
right window now displays the name TEST.ZIP and reports that it is new.

PAGE 5

Now you are ready to Compress and store the files you have tagged. Move the
mouse over "Add" on the main menu and click. (MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE ADD
MENU AND NOT THE MOVE MENU). Now move the mouse over "Overwrite" and click.
Your choices now are "Highlighted","Tagged" or "Input". Since you are
compressing tagged files, move the mouse over "Tagged" and double click.
Your screen now reports that Compression is taking place. When you click to
return, you will see that TEST.ZIP contains the files you tagged.

- KEYBOARD USERS -

First, to enter a directory where the files you want to compress are
located, press to activate the main menu system and move across to
the item "Disk". Select " Change Dir ... ". Note, whenever a menu choice is
followed by "...", an additional prompt will appear asking for more
information. You now see a list of all the directories in the current drive.
Scroll through the list to your choice and press . Your DIRECTORY
window now displays all files in that directory.

If the DIRECTORY window is not highlighted use the left direction key to
highlight it. Now, use your down key to position the red highlight bar on a
file name and press Enter or 'T' (the tag key). An asterisk appears in the
"TAG" column confirming the file has been chosen. You can select any number
of files in this manner. They can be consecutive or random. If you need to
DE-select a tagged choice, place the red bar over that file and press Enter
or 'U' (the untag key). Go ahead and tag any desired files. Don't worry,
your original files will be preserved as is. Now you will create a new
Compression File to store your tagged files.

* COMPRESSING SELECTED FILES - STEP 2

Again use your key to activate the menu and move over to "CPF". Note
the help line instruction. For now choose "Input CPF". You will be prompted
to enter a name for the compression file. The box will show the path of the
directory you are in. If you want the Compression file to go to that path,
which you do, then just add the name for your new Compression file (ONE
THAT DOES NOT EXIST). (ie . You could direct the file to another
drive and/or path by changing the path in the prompt box (ie A:\TEST.ZIP).
When you press you will notice the right window displays the name
TEST.ZIP (or other extension), and report that it is new. Not for long.

Now you are ready to Compress and store the files you have tagged. to
your menu and move to "Add" (MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE ADD MENU AND NOT THE
MOVE MENU). We'll see why next. Select "Overwrite". Your choices now are
"Highlighted","Tagged" or "Input". Since you are compressing tagged files,
choose "Tagged". After pressing your screen will go black and report
that Compression is taking place. When you press to return, you will
see that the TEST.ZIP file contains the files you tagged.

PAGE 6

- MOUSE AND KEYBOARD USERS -

* SOME DETAILED EXPLANATION OF OPTIONS - STEP 3

The "Move" option on the menu offers the same choices as does "Add", and
works the same way, with one important exception; "Add" simply copies the
files to Compression; "Move" actually moves the files into Compression. In
other words the original files are deleted. Before using "Move", refer to
GETTING THE PICTURE and the archivers documentation for a full explanation.

When you used the "Add" option to Compress your files, you chose "Tagged".
Two other options were available. "Highlighted" (self explanatory) and
"Input". "Input" allows you to enter the name of any file or use wildcard
characters to define a group of files. You must include the path where the
files are located, unless the files you are referring to are in the current
directory.

The "Update" choice under "Add" and "Move" will add a file ONLY if it is new
or if it has the same name as a file already in the Compression File and it
is more recent.

The "Freshen" choice will add a file ONLY if it has the same name as a file
already in the compression file and it is more recent.

* FILE EXTRACTION - STEP 4

- MOUSE USERS -

For demonstration purposes, let's assume that it is time for a break. Move
the mouse over and click to exit the program. Re-enter, .

Now let's Decompress those files you Compressed in the last section. If you
are not in the directory containing TEST.ZIP, go through the steps above
to select that directory. Next move the mouse over "CPF" on the main menu
and click. Move the mouse over "Select CPF" and click. A popup window
appears listing all of the Compression Files in this directory. Included
is TEST.ZIP which you created. Select TEST.ZIP. Notice TEST.ZIP is now
displayed in the right window (CPF window).

Next move the mouse to the TEST.ZIP window side and click to highlight it.
Tag all the files in TEST.ZIP. Now you are poised for extraction. Move the
mouse over "Extract" on the main menu and click. Choose "Check Overwrite",
then "Tagged". You are then asked for the destination directory (where files
will be extracted). The default is the current directory. Accept the
default by moving the mouse over " OK " and clicking.

Your screen displays a message telling you that these files already exist
and asks for confirmation Y/N. This is a safeguard to warn you that a same
name file exists in the extract directory. Choose Y to extract each of the
files. On return note that TEST.ZIP still contains the files.

PAGE 7

Now lets delete the files in TEST.ZIP. Highlight the TEST.ZIP window and tag
all the files. Activate the "Delete" menu (this DELETE is for compression
files only - see help line), select "Delete" and then "Tagged". The files
are deleted. Now to delete TEST.ZIP, highlight the DIRECTORY window and
highlight TEST.ZIP. Activate the "File" menu, choose "Delete" and then
"Highlighted". TEST.ZIP is now deleted.

- KEYBOARD USERS -

For demonstration purposes, let's assume that it is time for a break. Exit
the program . Re-enter, .

Now let's Decompress those files you Compressed in the last section. If you
are not in the directory containing TEST.ZIP, to menu and over to
"Disk". Select "Directory Maint." and select that directory. Go to the CPF
menu and select "Select CPF". A popup menu will appear listing all
Compression Files in this directory. Included will be TEST.ZIP which you
created. Choose TEST.ZIP.

Next highlight the TEST.ZIP window and tag all the files using 'T'. to
the "Extract" menu, select "Check Overwrite", then "Tagged". You are asked
for the destination directory (where files will be extracted). The default
is the current directory. Accept the default.

Your screen will go black and display a message telling you that these files
already exist and ask for confirmation Y/N. This is a safeguard to warn you
that a same name file exists in the extract directory. Choose Y to extract
each of the files. On return note that TEST.ZIP still contains the files.

Now lets delete the files in TEST.ZIP. Activate the TEST.ZIP window and tag
all the files. to the "Delete" menu (this DELETE is for compression
files only - see help line), choose "Tagged". The files are deleted. Now to
delete TEST.ZIP, left direction key to the directory window and highlight
TEST.ZIP. to the "File" menu and choose "Delete" and then
"Highlighted". After pressing the file will be deleted.

- MOUSE AND KEYBOARD USERS -

The "Overwrite" choice under "Extract" will extract and overwrite any
files with the same names and extensions. Use this only if you are sure you
will not be overwriting any files you want to keep. The "New" and "Freshen"
choices were defined under "Add" and "Move".

This concludes the tutorial. You now have a good idea how to operate
EZ CO*DE. The next section "GETTING THE PICTURE" explains all the options
available to you. If you have a problem, please notify USEFULL CONCEPTS.

PAGE 8

GETTING THE PICTURE

IMPORTANT: The copyrighted documentation that came with your archiving
utility goes into great detail on the functions available with that program.
THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THAT. EZ CO*DE supports most of the functions
for these programs. Listed here are the functions supported by EZ CO*DE
along with descriptions of their use WITH EZ CO*DE. To use other features of
your archiver, use the DOS command line. This should be a rare occurrence.

* EXTRACT

The function of "Extract" is to Decompress files from the Compression file
and store them in a directory of your choice. You can use "Highlighted",
"Tagged" or "Input" to define the files you wish to extract. Input allows
you to enter a filename or you may use the DOS wildcard characters to
define a group of files. The options for "Extract" are outlined below.

Check Overwrite ... :
Checks your chosen directory for files with the same name. If any are
found you will be asked if you want to overwrite them.

Overwrite ... :
Extracts the chosen files and will overwrite any existing files with the
same name.

Update ... :
Extracts the chosen files if they are new or if they have the same name
and are more recent than the files in the chosen directory.

Freshen ... :
Extracts the chosen files if they are same named and more recent than the
files in the chosen directory.

* ADD

The function of "Add" is to Compress and add selected files from a
directory to the Compression File in the Compression File window. You can
use "Highlighted", "Tagged" or "Input" to define the files you wish
to add. The options for "Add" are outlined below.

Overwrite ... :
Compresses chosen files and will overwrite same named files. Be sure you
have selected the proper compression files then press .

Update ... :
Compresses chosen files if they are new or if they are same named and more
recent than the files in the Compression File.

Freshen ... :
Compresses chosen files only if they are same named and more recent than
the files in the Compression File.

PAGE 9

* MOVE

This function works the same as "Add" except that it deletes the selected
directory files after they are added.

WARNING : The files selected will be deleted regardless of whether or not
they meet the "Update" or "Freshen" criteria.

* DELETE

The function of "Delete" is to delete selected files from the Compression
File in the Compression File window. NOTE : To delete DIRECTORY files,
see the "File" menu. You can use "Highlighted", "Tagged" or "Input" to
define the files you wish to delete.

* REMARK

This function will allow you to enter descriptive comments to your
Compression files or to the individual files within. See the documetation
for the archiver you are using for a full explanation.

* LIST

This function uses EZ CO*DE's file viewing utility for the viewing options
listed below.

View CPF :
This selection will allow you to view the contents of the current
compression file in the archivers format.

View CPF w/path :
This the same as VIEW CPF, except it will include path information.

View CPF w/tech :
This is unique to .ZIP files. It is a detailed technical view of the
contents of a Compression file.

* MISC

This function contains the options listed below.

Create SFX :
The SFX function creates a new EXECUTABLE file (ie TEXT.EXE) from a
Compression File (ie TEST.ZIP) which will self extract these files when you
enter the name at the command line. The name given to the new file
will be the same as the name of the compression file.

Test CPF :
The test function will test the integrity of a Compression file and report
any errors found in the Compression file.

Fix CPF :
The fix function will attempt to repair a damaged or corrupted Compression
File. This can be used in the event the test function reports errors or
anytime you feel a Compression file is in need of repair.

PAGE 10

* FLAG

This function lets you toggle on or off; directory/path use, recursion use,
password use and/or authenticity use. When these flags are activated, a flag
character will appear in the lower right corner of the screen. The flag
characters are :

D Directory\path use
R Recursion use
P Password use
! Authenticity use

Here are some general explanations for these flags. Because each archive
method has its own idiosyncrasies, you should see the documentation for the
particular archive method you are using.

Directory\path use :
When this flag is activated, compressed files will be stored with their
path names and decompressed files will be extracted to their paths.
You will be asked to enter the base directory when this option is activated.
The base directory is the directory from which the archive program will be
executed.

Recursion use :
When this flag is activated, you will be prompted to enter the directory
and filespecs for recursion. Recursion compresses all files given by the
filespecs in the directory specified and all its subdirectories.

Password use :
When this flag is activated, you will be prompted to enter passwords when
it is appropriate. Usually this is when you are compressing, extracting and
viewing files.

Authenticity use : (see .ZIP manual)
Currently this flag is only applicable to .ZIP files. When this flag is
activated it will put authenticity verification on the files you compress.
Files marked for authenticity checking will have an '!' next to their name.

* SORT

This function sorts the files in the higlighted window and sets the sort
filter, so that future directory and CPF selections will be sorted likewise.

By Name :
Alpha sort by name.

By Extension :
Alpha sort by the three letter file extension.

By Length :
From shortest to longest length in bytes.

By Date :
From earliest to latest creation date.

PAGE 11

* FILE

The function of "File" is to give you the DOS file handling capabilities
from within the program. You can use "Highlighted", "Tagged" or "Input" to
define the files you wish to act on. The "Tagged" option is a valuable tool
which can execute in one command, what would take you any number of
commands from the DOS command line. The options are self explanatory.

WARNING : When using Move from the FILE menu, the files you select to move
will be deleted, regardless of whether or not they are
successfully copied. (i.e. Trying to move a file to a directoy
with a same named Read-Only file).

* DISK

The function of "Disk" is to give you the main DOS directory and drive
handling capabilities from within the program. Again, here the options are
self explanatory.

* CPF

The function of "CPF" is to make your Compression File selections.
You will be limited to using only Compression Files for which you have the
corresponding archive programs for. The options are defined below.

Select CPF ... :
This option allows you to select a Compression File from those in the
current directory.

Input CPF ... :
You must use this option to choose self extract files and to create new
Compression Files. You can also include pathnames allowing you to select
Self Extract Files and Compression Files from any drive and/or directory.

*

This option uses EZCODE's view utility to view the highlighted file. Options
for the view utility are listed on the help screen which is activated by
pressing from within the view utility. If you wish to edit the file you
are viewing, press . By default, when you invoke the editor, EZCODE uses
the name 'EDIT'. You can change this name to invoke an editor of your choice
using , which prompts you for a new name. This name is then saved in
EZCODE's configuration and used from then on.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
