Acknowlegements
I would like to acknowledge two people for their help and assistance
in this project: Rodger Studner for a way to trap certain control
keys, and Jean Gordon, for finding thelayout of a Dvorak
keyboard.

Dvorak Keyboard Enhancer, or DKE, is a program that reconfigures
the keyboard to emulate a Dvorak keyboard. The Dvorak layout is
designed to make typing as fast as possible, by having approximately
80% of the keys typed on the home row.
The qwerty keyboard, on the other hand, is designed to slow down
typing speed. That is because when typewriters were invented fast
typists could jam the machine. But that was in 1867. Since then,
typewriters have been improved greatly, and also with the advent of
computers there is no prohibiting factor--the faster you type, the
better.
If you are used to typing on the qwerty keyboard, don't say "I
don't want to learn how to type all over again" because it is not
hard to switch. A little bit of practice is all it takes. If you
are not a very good typist now, what better way to start than with
the finest keyboard layout available?

If you look carefully, you will notice that only 2 keys' shifted
states are altered by the Dvorak keyboard. The [ { key is now the [
] key, and the ] } key is now the { } key.
Anyone with a PS/2 keyboard, or any keyboard where the caps snap
off, can pop off the keys and rearrange them according to the Dvorak
standard (standard for Dvorak, but not for all keyboards in general).

You will only have to be aware of the fact mentioned above about the
bracket and brace keys.
To run DKE, just type DVORAK
give you a little ANSI screen instructing you how to run DKE, and
will not terminate and stay resident. To run DKE with a large memory
model, type DVORAK /L
type DVORAK /S
it will stay resident in memory.
The large memory model contains one feature that the small model
does not: if you have DKE installed with a large memory model then
you may hit LeftShift-RightShift-Space at any time and another ANSI
screen with the Dvorak keyboard layout in shifted and unshifted
states. It will only pop up the screen in text modes, however. No
action is taken in graphic modes. This memory model consumes
approximately 7,000 bytes of main memory.
The small memory model does not have any help screen. It is
streamlined to consume only about 1,500 bytes of main memory and that
may be important if you multitask or if you use a lot of TSRs.
Dvorak Keyboard Enhancer is written 100% in assembly language
for efficiency in memory usage and speed. If a program is run every
time you hit a key, you sure would not want it to be slow! Although
it does take a little longer every time you hit a key, it is
impossible to notice: DKE lenghens the time a keystroke takes by
about 1/1900th of a second.
If you find any bug in DKE, please write to me as soon as
possible. You do not have to be a registered user to receive
support. However, if I do go through the effort to fix the bug it
would not be unreasonable for you to register DKE. If you have an
idea for a good feature to add to DKE, write to me and I will
definitely consider it. Anyone who sends me an idea for a new
feature that I use will get free registration to DKE.
All users may try out DKE for 30 days for no fee. After that
period, to continue using Dvorak Keyboard Enhancer you must register
it. All business, institutional, or educational use of DKE must be
registered. The bottom line is if you use it, you pay for it. It's
only $10, and for the amount of programming it took to write DKE and
the amount you use DKE, it is a good deal. To register DKE send your
registration form and check made out to Christopher Kirmse to:
