What is ACZAR Page 2
------------- --------

ACZAR is a program that helps manage files that are in
compressed (compacted) format or helps manage files by
compressing them easily. Besides these main features, it
offers a wide variety of helpful additions such as general
file and disk management functions. In addition, ACZAR
supports all switches for McAfee's virus scanner program
SCAN.EXE.

ACZAR is NOT freeware nor public domain. ACZAR is shareware.
ACZAR is copyrighted. CZAR Software retains ownership of that
copyright. Anyone who continues to use ACZAR after a trial
period of 30 days is obligated to purchase ACZAR by paying a
small registration fee. Only with your support, ACZAR can be
continued to be developed and improved.

==============================================================
What are compressed files, and why would you use them? Page 3
----------------------------------------------------- --------

Nowadays, many computer software programs and data files are
very large. Much disk space is required to store these big
files on hard drives or floppy disks. In addition, big files
need more time to transfer electronically from computer to
computer.

To somehow store these big files in reduced or compacted form
would save disk space, time, and money. That is why there are
several good compression and decompression programs such as
PKZIP, LHA, ARJ etc. These programs work under mathematical
compression algorithms that allow them to reduce the size of
a computer program or data file to a fraction of the original
size. Once these large computer programs are compressed,
they can be transferred, for example, to electronic bulletin
board systems. To use the computer programs and its data
files, compressed files have to be decompressed and returned
to their original sizes.

Moreover, compression is a convenient way to store files in
compressed form on floppy disks. Otherwise, these big files
would take precious disk space.

Unfortunately, all the compression and decompression programs
are difficult to use because they are command line driven.
This is why CZAR Software built ACZAR, to help manage these
compression and decompression programs and more. You can use
ACZAR as a DOS Shell to manipulate files and directories, or
you can use ACZAR's ability to take advantage of each switch
in McAfee's virus scanner program SCAN.EXE.

==============================================================
Features Page 4
-------- --------

þ New Interface - Revolutionary new interface that is
even easier to use than it was in
version 1.00. It looks and feels
just like Windows 3.1 with resizable,
removable, closable, stackable, 3-d
windows. It's still a text base
interface but feels like a graphical
one. It even has background wallpapers
and windows that reduce to a text
icon. Uses state of the art pull down
menus, radio-buttons, push-buttons,
list-boxes, list-windows, 3-dim
windows with real shadows,
and much more.

þ Ease of use - The biggest concern for CZAR Software
was that ACZAR should be very easy to
use but extremely powerful in
function. ACZAR IS easy to use and
powerful at the same time. Try it!

þ Fully mouse driven - Users can fully operate ACZAR with a
mouse without ever using the keyboard.
Users without a mouse can use hot-keys
or cursor keys for speedy operations.

þ All major archives - All major archive files are supported
supported such as ZIP, LZH, PAK, ARC, ARJ, SQZ
ZOO, and HYP.

þ Supports SFX Files - Supports all self extracting files
(SFX) for ZIP, ARJ, PAK, HYP, SQZ,
and LZH.

þ Backup or Restore - Backup or Restore entire drives or
directories using the most powerful
compressions of ZIP or ARJ.

þ Multitasking Menus - Access most functions via the allways
active pulldown menu on top of the
screen or the pushbuttons. That means
the File Handling mode is always
active.

þ Additional Support - Fine tune .EXE file compression
programs such as DIET, PKLITE, and
LZEXE by using all the switches they
offer.

þ SQZ File Support - ACZAR v2.00 now supports the new
compression program Sqeeze from
Sweden. SQZ outperforms ARJ.

þ HYP File Support - ACZAR v2.00 also supports the new
compression program HYP from Germany.

þ Text Editors - Use the built-in SDI Notepad file
editor or use any external file editor
of your choice. This built-in editor
even features cut and paste functions,
copy, print, word-wrap, loading of
multiple text files and more.

þ Drag & Drop - ACZAR 2.00 has sensational Drag & Drop
functions just like Windows. This
makes mouse users fly. You can use the
Drag & Drop functions to edit, delete,
copy, move, tag, compress, and
decompress files or directories.

þ External Viewer - Use the built-in file viewer with full
mouse support or any external file
viewer of your choice.

þ Scan Archives - Look for viruses within archives or
normal files.

þ Multi-Select - Tag as many files as you want and
Compression instruct ACZAR to compress each file
into a single archive.

þ Use XMS/EMS/UMB - If available, ACZAR can use extended
memory (XMS) v2.0 or higher, expanded
memory (EMS) v3.20 or higher, or even
upper memory blocks (UMB). This makes
ACZAR very fast. If non of these
memory sources are available, ACZAR
can use a unique, temporary disk file.

þ 43/50 Line display - Use 43/50 line option to display the
maximum information on your monitor
is inclusive within archive and
viewing files.

þ Extensive Switches - For the beginner, there is no need to
set even one switch to successfully
manage archives. Just use the default
settings. For the "power-user", get
almost everything out of each archive
or virus scanner. There are extensive
switch settings available for each
archive.

þ Automatically - Unlike other archive shells, ACZAR
locates archives searches all drives and directories
in seconds automatically. There is no need to
hassle with putting all files in the
DOS PATH etc. ACZAR knows where to
get all the necessary archive files
and how to use them wherever they
are located. No need to change your
AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.

þ Uses Internal - Uses internal file ID's to detect
File ID's ZIP, ARJ, LZH, ARC, PAK, ZOO, SQZ,
and HYP files. This alows to use
archives with different file
extensions.

þ File and Disk - ACZAR has complete file and disk
Management management systems built in. For
example, copy, delete, move, rename,
view, date change, time change,
attribute change, text search, locate
files and much more.

þ Set Colors - The ability to set colors or even
background wallpapers to your liking.

...and much more...

General Mouse and Keyboard Operation Page 7
------------------------------------ --------

ACZAR is fully mouse operational. That means, if you have a
Microsoft Mouse or 100% compatible, you can operate ACZAR
without ever touching the keyboard. You might experience some
problems in 43 or 50 line modes if your mouse driver is NOT
100% Microsoft compatible.

However, if you do not have a mouse, you can still access
functions very quickly by using hot-keys and short-cut-keys.
Use the "Hot-keys and Short-Cut-Keys Chart" at the end of
this documentation for convenient use.

With the mouse, pushing the left mouse button while the
mouse cursor is over a dialogue item or any other menu item,
will activate a specific function. Throughout the documen-
tation, we will refer to this operation as "clicking" over
specific dialogue items.

The keyboard TAB key moves to the next menu or dialogue item
while pressing SHIFT+TAB will move backward. Pressing the
SPACE bar or ENTER will activate or check a dialogue item or
operation. Pressing ESC always escapes and returns to the
previous operation.

Throughout the program, you will see dialogue items like:

==============================================================
How to use ACZAR Page 8
---------------- --------

Within the main window you are able to perform the most
important tasks of ACZAR and more.

Here you can view, delete, copy, move, rename, compress, and
decompress files, access the file- and disk management,
scan for viruses, run other programs, get specific infor-
mation about files and disk drives, and much more.

The main window is divided into two major parts. The upper
part is normally used for the source path, and the lower part
is normally used for the target path. Although it does not
matter if you use the upper part of the screen for your
source path and the lower part of the screen for the target
path or vice versa, it is a good idea to keep to the
"natural" top-down perspective to minimize confusion.

Operations performed with source path functions are totally
independent from target path functions and vice versa. This
allows more freedom for specific functions such as file
deletion, copying, moving etc.

Some functions will place a file into the opposite window.
For example, if you decompress a file in the Source Path,
the decompressed files will be placed in the Target Path,
or if you copy a file from the Target Path to the Source
Path.

TIP: If you are using a mouse and would like to scroll
through list boxes such as a file list box or a
directory list box without much aiming on the up-arrow
or down-arrow of the scroll bar, point your mouse
cursor within the list box and hold down your left
mouse button. While you are holding down the left
mouse button, move the mouse cursor upwards or
downwards until you reach the top or bottom of the
list box. This allows speedy operation with the mouse.

==============================================================
Drag & Drop Page 9
----------- --------

ACZAR offers sensational Drag & Drop functions for mouse
users. The Drag & Drop feature is usually only offered in
Windows applications. ACZAR gives you this power right into
a DOS application.

To drag & drop an item simplyfies many tasks such as
editing, deleting, copying, moving, tagging, decompressing,
or compressing. You can Drag & Drop Files or entire
directories and subdirectories. The Drag & Drop functions
can only be used with a mouse.

To Drag & Drop a file or directory, follow the steps below:

1. Point your mouse cursor to the file or directory so that
the highlighting bar points to the item you wish to use.

2. Press the left mouse button, keep it pressed.

3. While you are holding down the left mouse button, press
the right mouse button.

4. You will see a black box comming up. This represents
either your file or directory. Keep the left and right
mouse buttons pressed.

5. Once you see the black box, drag it down to the
pushbuttons such as EDIT, DELETE, COPY, MOVE, TAG,
DECOMPRESS, or COMPRESS. When you drag your file or
directory over these pushbuttons, you will see that
the pushbuttons show an inverse color.

6. Once you selected a pushbutton, release your left and
right mouse buttons. The action of that specific
pushbutton will now be carried out.

If you have some more ideas on how you would like to use
the Drag & Drop functions, contact Thomas Jaeger,
CZAR Software.

==============================================================
How to View a File Page 10
------------------ --------

To view a file press ENTER or double click with the mouse on
the file you would like to view.

ACZAR will detect if the file you would like to view is a
simple text file or a compressed ZIP, ARJ, LZH, PAK, ARC,
ZOO, SQZ, or HYP file. ACZAR will also detect if it is a
self-extracting (SFX) ZIP, ARJ, PAK, LZH, SQZ, or HYP file.
In addition, ACZAR automatically tells you if the file is
a PKLITE, DIET, LZEXE, or HAP file.

ACZAR now checks the internal header of each file in order
to detect what kind of file it is.

==============================================================
How to Change Directories
-------------------------

To change directories, go to the Source or Target Directory
list boxes (upper or lower left side of the main window) and
press ENTER or double click with the mouse on the directory.

In order to view subdirectories, just press ENTER or double
click on the directory that contains subdirectories. ACZAR
will then display the next level of subdirectories.

==============================================================
How to Resize a Window
----------------------

To resize a window, click on one of its corners and hold down
the left mouse button. Resize the window to the desired
position.

Resizing several windows allows you to have more than just
one window on screen. For example, you can resize ACZAR's
main window, open up the ZIP switches window, resize it, and
have both windows open at the same time.

To switch between windows, click on the window you want to
use.

==============================================================
How to Compress Directories Page 11
--------------------------- --------

To compress a directory do the following:

- Click with the left mouse button on the directory in one
of the directory list boxes. Keep the left mouse button
pressed.

- Press the right mouse button. Keep it pressed. You
should see a black box.

- Drag the black box down to the compress button and
release both mouse buttons.

- Enter a filename for the directory. Note: You can see
the directory path you are about to compress on the
top window line.

If you would like to compress a directory including its
subdirectories, you have to turn on certain switches for
that particular compression utility.

For example, if you would like to compress a directory with
its subdirectories, do the following:

- Go into the SWITCHES main menu

- Select ZIP Switches

- Select ZIP Switches Part 1

- Turn on switches STORE PATHNAMES and
RECURSE SUBDIRECTORIES.

- You can now compress a directory including its
subdirectories using PKZIP v2.04g.

==============================================================
Troubleshooting Page 12
--------------- --------

Problem 1: When viewing a text file with the built in text
*********** viewer of ACZAR, why can I not move my mouse
cursor any higher than line 25 in 43/50 line
modes? It works just fine in 25 line mode.

Cause: You are not using a 100% Microsoft compatible
mouse driver. Many mouse driver manufacturers
claim to have 100% Microsoft compatible
mouse/driver; whereas, the opposite is true.
ACZAR's internal file viewer has been tested
without any errors whatsoever on several
machines using Microsoft Mouse Driver Version
9.0.

Solution 1: Replace your mouse driver with a 100% Microsoft
compatible mouse driver such as Microsoft Mouse
driver v8.x or v9.x.

Solution 2: Use an external file viewer such as LIST.COM.
To do that, select the OPTIONS main menu, go
into the EXPERT settings and enter an external
file viewer path.

Problem 2: ACZAR locks up, cold-boots, or displays strange
*********** error messages and then asks the user to press
any key to return to system.

Cause: It seems that this problem is caused using
STACKER, the working path in menu OPTIONS,
"Expert Settings" is set to a compressed drive,
and using XMS, EMS, UMB memory.

Solution 1: Go into the main menu OPTIONS and use "Expert
Settings". Change the working path to a
directory that is NOT compressed by STACKER.
This could be a ramdrive. Using a ramdrive
will also speed up ACZAR very much.

Solution 2: Use ACZAR's environment variables (see section
"Environment Variables" for details) to turn
off part of ACZAR's memory usage in UMB, EMS,
or XMS.

Solution 3: Change your STACKER settings so that it will
not use any EMS or XMS memory. Refer to your
STACKER manual for details.

Solution 4: Go into the main menu OPTIONS and use "Expert
Settings". Turn off the switch "Use expanded
memory EMS". This will dramatically slow down
ACZAR, though.

If you encounter any other errors or strange behavior of
AZCAR, please call 915-595-8787 or call the support BBS at
915-595-8705. Only if you report the errors, ACZAR can be
corrected and improved. While you are reporting errors, any
suggestions are welcome!
Environment Variables

==============================================================
Environment Variables Page 13
--------------------- --------

DOS environment variables are used to pass information to
programs when they execute. This means that the information
for the program does not need to be included on the command
line or in parameter files.

With the help of environment variables, ACZAR can be
influenced on how it should operate.

Note: ACZAR v1.00 allowed you to use the ACZAR environment
variable to set the ACZAR path. This is no longer
required as ACZAR now reads your PATH variable
instead.

The ACZAR overlay manager checks the DOS environment for the
ACZAR variable, which allows certain ACZAR settings to be
overwridden at program runtime. If the ACZAR environment
variable name is present, the variable is examined for the
following settings:

/OU0 (Disable use of XMS UMBs memory for overlays)
/OU1 (Enable use of XMS UMBs memory for overlays)
/OP0 (Disable use of EMS memory for overlays)
/OP1 (Enable use of EMS memory for overlays)
/SE0 (Disable use of EMS memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SE1 (Enable use of EMS memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SX0 (Disable use of XMS memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SX1 (Enable use of XMS memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SU0 (Disable use of UMBs memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SU1 (Enable use of UMBs memory when ACZAR swaps out)
/SD (Directory for ACZAR's swap file)

+----------------------------------------------+
| Note: All switches are turned on by default. |
+----------------------------------------------+

Switches in detail:

/OUn
----
The /OUn switch (where n=0 is disabled, and n=1 is enabled)
controls ACZAR's overlay pool using XMS v2.0 upper memory
blocks.

ACZAR=/OU1 (Use UMB memory)
ACZAR=/OU0 (Do not use UMB memory)

/OPn
----
The /OPn switch (where n=0 is disabled, and n=1 is enabled)
controls ACZAR's allocation of the overlay pool using
EMS v3.2+ pageframe.

ACZAR=/OP1 (Use EMS memory)
ACZAR=/OP0 (Do not use EMS memory)

/SEn
----
The /SEn switch (where n=0 is disabled, and n=1 is enabled)
controls the usage of EMS memory when ACZAR swaps out and
runs other programs such as PKIZIP, ARJ, LZH, running other
programs etc.

ACZAR=/SE1 (Use EMS memory when swapping out)
ACZAR=/SE0 (Do not use EMS memory when swapping out)

/SXn
----
The /SXn switch (where n=0 is disabled, and n=1 is enabled)
controls the usage of XMS memory when ACZAR swaps out and
runs other programs such as PKIZIP, ARJ, LZH, running other
programs etc.

ACZAR=/SX1 (Use XMS memory when swapping out)
ACZAR=/SX0 (Do not use XMS memory when swapping out)

/SUn
----
The /SUn switch (where n=0 is disabled, and n=1 is enabled)
controls the usage of UMB memory when ACZAR swaps out and
runs other programs such as PKIZIP, ARJ, LZH, running other
programs etc.

ACZAR=/SU1 (Use UMB memory when swapping out)
ACZAR=/SU0 (Do not use UMB memory when swapping out)

/SD
---------
The /SD switch may be used to specify a directory
path to be used when ACZAR uses the disk to save the
memory image when swapping out and running other programs.
In order to tell ACZAR to ONLY use the disk, you can turn
off the EMS memory usage switch in menu OPTIONS, "Expert
Settings". Or, you can use the above switches to turn off
all extra memory. This will force ACZAR to use the disk.

It will slow down ACZAR unless you use a RAMDRIVE for the
directory. By default, ACZAR uses the working path in
menu OPTIONS, "Expert Settings".

ACZAR=/SDI:\TEMP (Uses directory I:\TEMP)

You can combine several ACZAR switches into one. Make sure
you seperate each switch with a space.

Examples:

ACZAR=/OU0 /OP0 (Disable UMB, EMS memory usage)
ACZAR=/SU0 /SX0 (Disable UMB, XMS memory when swapping out)
ACZAR=/OU0 /OP0 /SU0 /SX0 /SE0 (Disable all extra memory)

Appendix F. What is shareware and how does it work Page 19
-------------------------------------------------- --------

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to
continue using the software to an updated program with
printed manual.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with
a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors
are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors,
and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically
grants the right to copy and distribute the software,
either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
You should find software that suits your needs and
pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The
Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because
you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you
don't pay for it.

Appendix G. Future plans about ACZAR Page 20
------------------------------------ --------

There will be Windows versions of ACZAR. The English Windows
version will come out shortly after the German version of
ACZAR 2.00 for DOS has been released. Call the CZAR Software
Support BBS, (915) 595-8705, to get the most current releases
and products.

There are other kinds of programs planned to be released.

==============================================================
Appendix H. Technical Information about ACZAR Page 21
--------------------------------------------- --------

ACZAR has been programmed to %75 with Microsoft Visual BASIC
for DOS v1.00 and 25% with Microsoft MASM 6.0 Assembler.

The ACZAR source code is about 25,000 lines long.

==============================================================
Appendix I. Credits and Thanks Page 22
------------------------------ --------

I would like to thank the following people who were involved
in testing and helping me developing ACZAR:

Manuel Lopez, 909 E. Garfield St, Phoenix, AZ 85006. He is
probably the greatest ACZAR fan. Manuel tested ACZAR like
crazy to find the most outrageous errors to be corrected.

Jesse Moore, Moore Enterprises, P.O. Box 370804, El Paso, TX
79937, phone: (915) 855-0365, who gave me lots if input and
help. Thanks Jesse.

My brother Bernd who did lots of testing and suggestions.
He did also the 30 wallpapers for ACZAR.

Mark Finocchio, El Paso, TX. He also the author of C-MENU,
a VGA Menu System and another ASP program. When you
register ACZAR, you'll receive a $5 Discount coupon and a
free evaluation disk of C-MENU.

And all others who helped in making ACZAR a great program.

Warranty Disclaimer Page 23
------------------- --------

Users of ACZAR must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"ACZAR is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness
for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages,
direct or consequential, which may result from the use of
ACZAR."

ACZAR is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it
with your friends, but please do not give it away altered
or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet
to provide incentive for programmers to continue to
develop new products. If you find this program useful and
find that you are using ACZAR and continue to use
ACZAR after a reasonable trial period, you must make
a registration payment of $35.00 to CZAR Software. The
$35.00 registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
just like a book. An example is that this software may be
used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, as long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it is
being used at another, just as a book cannot be read at
the same time by two different persons at two locations.

Commercial users of ACZAR must register and pay for
their copies of ACZAR within 30 days of first use or
their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may
be made by contacting CZAR Software.

Anyone distributing ACZAR for any kind of remuneration
must first contact CZAR Software at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically
granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering
to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering ACZAR immediately
(However CZAR Software must still be advised so that the
distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version
of ACZAR.).

You are encouraged to pass a copy of ACZAR along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register
their copy if they find that they can use it. All
registered users will receive a copy of the latest version
of the ACZAR system.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
