THIS FILE CONTAINS INFORMATION ON ARCNET CARDS
==============================================

Most ARCNET cards have a standard ARCNET operating mode for
WORKSTATIONS that claim 64k of memory beginning at D0000H. This
operating mode, sometimes referred to as Compatible Mode, is the
native mode of ARCNET under Novell.

Some ARCNET card manufacturers have released cards which can work
in a newly devised Enhanced Mode, which uses 16K of memory
beginning at a selectible location CC000H or D0000H.

While the Enhanced Mode, using only 16k, has an obvious memory
advantage - it has a compatibility disadvantage. Using the
Enhanced Mode of a particular manufacturer requires that the
workstation shell be generated with a proprietary driver which
cannot be used with Compatible Mode cards. Hence for after market
additions to the network, it is difficult to insure plug-and-go
installations because the same type Enhanced Mode cards may not
be available in future, whereas, any Compatible Mode cards can be
mixed at any time.

The File Server ARCNET cards can vary widely in memory address
selection. However this is not an issue if you are using an ALL
Chargecard.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
