GUIDE TO SELECT BBS'S VIA TELNET 06/95
----------------------------------------------

Thank you for downloading the 06/95 edition of the SBI (Select BBS's on
the Internet) BBS listing. This listing will be updated MONTHLY, unless
there are no changes or additions to the list from the prior month. This
list will always be called SBI.ZIP

Files in this archive should include:

names and addresses)

and full descriptions, for World-Wide-Web

software) import format (MBBS Only).

WHY ANOTHER INTERNET BBS LIST?
------------------------------
The answer to this is simple - other internet BBS lists mostly contain
government or educational based BBS's. They are not what most "BBS'ers"
would usually call a "BBS" - which are very diverse and colorful systems
that offer just about everything - messages, files, games, chat, and other
services - and up until recently, were mostly accessible via long distance
phone calls! This is a list of "real" BBS's accessible via TELNET and
RLOGIN on the Internet.

We feel a good and FREE listing of these systems will not only help promote
BBS's on the 'net, but also act as an invaluable aid to the new Internet
user trying (and sometimes desperately searching) for useful and *fun*
systems to visit out in cyberspace. This list does *not* contain any
opinions or editorials of the systems listed - it is merely a listing, with
details provided (where possible) by the BBS sysops themselves.

HOW DO I ACCESS THESE BBS'S VIA THE INTERNET?
---------------------------------------------
This "guide" is not designed to be a tutorial of "how to use the
Internet", nor is it a guide to "how to get access to the Internet".
There are hundreds of "help" files available on the network, or on your
favorite BBS to help you out. Most of the systems listed in this list
offer Internet access, and can be called using a modem and phone line.
Once you get setup on one of these systems (or gain access to the Internet
through some other means), you can access all of the systems listed by
using a "TELNET" client. This works differently for different systems,
but one common example would be:

telnet (ex: telnet boardwatch.com)
or
telnet (ex: 199.84.216.1)

Some systems integrate "telnet" into a menu prompt, which after execution
will simply ask you to enter the host name or IP address.

Some systems also offer the ability to use RLOGIN for the same purpose as
TELNET. I'd suggest you try TELNET first...

Another method is to telnet via a WWW page. If you have access to the
Web, you can use this URL - http://dkeep.com/sbi.htm

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT FILE TRANSFERS:
---------------------------------
Even though most of the BBS's listed support "outgoing" FTP, many of the
"PC" based systems listed here do not support FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
TO their PC-Based file systems (which is where most of the files are).
One solution for those that use dial-up accounts for their internet access
(where the user dials into the service with a PC using a communications
package such as Procomm or Qmodem), is to use ordinary "Z-modem" once
telnetted into the BBS. However, in order for this to work, you MUST USE
8-BIT BINARY MODE for your telnet session, or rlogin using the -8 command
line parameter. Different "telnet" and "rlogin" clients handle mode
settings in their own way, so check with your service, documentation, or
look thru your help files to see how this is done. I've accomplished
transfer rates of 1800 cps via telnet - so it IS possible. Granted, the
Internet is a fickle place when it comes to throughput, so your actual
rates will vary.

SBI REVISION NOTES 06/95
------------------------

WHERE IS THE 5/95 SBI LIST?
---------------------------
Well, as opposed to always coming out mid-month, I wanted to start
coming out the month prior to the dated list (ie, the June list should
be released in mid-May). So...there is no May list...only this June list.
Sorry for any confusion or delays.

SBI LIST VERIFICATION
---------------------
The time has come to start re-verifying the systems on the list - not
an easy task! Fortunately, I've enlisted the aide of an SBI
list-helper. Our general policy will be to try to verify all systems
that haven't been verified in 2 months. Any system that cannot be
verified for 2 consequitive months will be dropped from the list (this
way we account for temporary downtime). Sysops: Be sure to send updates
to your list entry if your domain name or IP address changes - else you
might be dropped from the list!

SBI LIST NOW AVAILABLE VIA EMAIL
--------------------------------
Dragon Keep International has just installed an "information server" to
distribute info via internet, Majornet, and Netaccess email systems. The
information server works with the following limitations:

1 - Info requests are only processed 1 time per day. So don't expect an
immediate email reply. Automated replies will generally be sent out within
24 hours of your request.

2 - Because of the shear size of the lists, some will be UUENCODED. So,
you will need to "cut" out the UUENCODED portion of the listing and
UUDECODE the file(s).

This is a "work in progress". For the most current instructions and
lists, write: [email protected] and put the word SBI in the
title/subject. Do NOT use this address for anything else! (No one will
read messages send to it).

Once we get all the bugs worked out, I'll regularly include this method
in the "Where to Find the SBI Files" listing.

--------------------------
DISTRIBUTION AND PUBLICITY
--------------------------

BBS MAGAZINE TO RUN LIST!
-------------------------
BBS Magazine has decided to run then list in their next issue (June or
July), and may even run the list more often than that! Sysops take note
- this is FREE national exposure for your BBS - all you need to do is
email me an information form (found in the SYSOP.DOC).

OTHER NATIONAL PUBLICATIONS
---------------------------
In addition to our monthly mentions in Boardwatch Magazine (list
keepers) and Westcoast Online, the SBI list is slated to run in several
new electronic "Zines" due out very soon. Keep your eyes open!

SBI LIST APPROVED FOR USENET FAQ ARCHIVES
-----------------------------------------
The SBI list has "finally" been approved for distribution in the
alt.news.answers and comp.news.answers internet newsgroups! It will
start appearing there this month.

The 7/95 edition is scheduled for release in last week of June.
Till then...keep on surfin'...

Your SBI list author (and now - cyber-dad),
Richard ([email protected])
