Hello sysops,
I set up this game originally, for Star Wars BBS(410)760-3688
Some of our users, although few at that time, wanted onliners.
Luke said that was ok, provided he could get the $5.00/month subscriptions
for it. I then set about finding freeware programs to set up the door in case
Star Wars actually was going to get the door. Here is the result of my work.
In the past, I have had a hard time getting pkzip to store subdirectories.
I would rather use ARJ, since that is also a freeware program. I have a great
deal of shareware that I must register, but cannot afford. Such is the way
I guess.
To use this program, you should know a few things. I created a setup.bat
file to handle setting up all the remaining directories. There are five
directories (games) in this package (archive) and the door will handle ten.
The remaining five games will be created by copying games 1-5. That was the
easiest way of doing it, yet it doesn't result in games that are too much
alike.
When the time comes to set up new games, you simply run the editing batch
program. I also set this up for ease of use. It will go through all ten
games, running master, so that you do not have to type it in manually. Just
use [ESC] past any game that you do not want to restart. The proper settings
for new games are:
1) Select ALL races (1234567890B)
2) NO passwords
3) RANDOM friendship codes.
4) ANY scenerio that you like.

Then it will load up the editor so that you can, if you like, edit the
selections of the games. I left most of the defaults in place in this file.
You should have no problem with any selections that you make here. The one thing
that you have to watch is the directory. If you look at my bat files, you
will see that I set everything up for C:\VGAP
You need a fossil driver to run these programs. I included that as well, since
this is all free. EVEN the com program is free. (ALL the DOC files are in this
archive) I loaded x00 into memory every time the programs are run, then
unload it when the program is done. X00 E 2 means "load x00 for 2 com ports"
Feel free to edit this. If you would rather, you can remove the x00 lines
from ALL the batch files and add this line to your autoexec.bat file:
DEVICE=C:\VGAP\X00.SYS E 2
Move my batch files from the c:\vgap directory, leaving all the other files
where they are, into your BBS directory. I could not guess what name you
gave to your WWIV BBS directory. The important file for these batch files
is the DOOR.SYS file. The door requires it to run correctly.
DOOR.SYS is called a drop file. That means that WWIV (or any good BBS
program) creates this file for any program that it drops into. The file is
text if you would like to look at it. It passes information to the door from
the BBS. Notice that I copy this file, in every batch file that needs it, to
the game directory (C:\VGAP). Again, I didn't know the name that you would
give to your bbs directory. If I did, I could have given the door a path to
the door.sys file. {Vdoor C:\BBS\DOOR.SYS}
The program that you use to run the game as a chain is VGAPDOOR.BAT. The
file PLAY.BAT runs the host program which is the actual game. The PLAY.bat
file is run by your maintenence batch file every night. Just put PLAY.BAT
after your nightly backup or whatever you run at midnight(Or any time) every
night. At Star Wars, we run a program to compile a file list. I would simply
place this command in a batch file, before PLAY.BAT, then place the name of
this batch file into my WWIV.INI file as a timed event. See your WWIV docs
for how that is done.
That should be everything that I can think of. I can be reached at:

This is freeware, so I cannot offer much support. I did, however, enclose
all the doc and txt files. If you feel my work worth rewarding, I am looking
for some OLD software. Basically, anything that you no longer use. Just put
the disk in an envelope and mail it to me in lieu of payment.
I would like a registered version of VGA PLANETS, if you ahve moved from
dos to a windows version, what happened to your DOS version? Do you ahve an old
version of MASM or TASM? No junk please. My address is.

Over the years I made the mistake of inserting code into X00 to
fix bugs in other software. It has reached a point that I
anything I touch will break something. The current source code
of X00 is too hard to work with.

Version 1.5x will be the last X00 using the original source code.
The next version will be a total rewrite. This should put me in
a position where I can again support X00.

Vince Perriello convinced me to make some additional changes
enabling baud rates above 38400. See X00 function 1Eh in
X00REF.DOC for additional information.

There seems to be a plague of hacked X00's out there. Any X00's
with a version above 1.53a are hacks. That is, any version 2.00,
2.01 etc are not legitimate versions of X00. In addition, any
version 1.30 or 1.51 are also hacks. Users should note that all
releases of X00 (including betas) use the Authenticity
Verification feature of PKZIP. A careful check of the
Authentication Verification message when the X00 files are UNZIP
will reveal most, it not all hacks.
