===== Installation =====================================

To upgrade from versions 1.85 thru' 1.90:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) Make copies of these files from your old version in a holding
directory structure separate, distinct and apart from the
directory you will install the program in:
term.cfg
smartpad.txt
term.log
term.tet
\HOST\users.dat
users.sec
\MAIL\areas.cfg
\MAILER\mailer.log
mailer.cfg
mailer.evt
request.lst
\PHONES\*.fon
*.kbd
*.xlt
*.cst where * is replaced with the name of any of the
files with these extensions that you have changed
\QWK\qwk.cfg
qwk.tag
qwk.nam
\SAM'ED\areas.cfg
origins.txt
samed.cfg
samed.lst
\SCRIPT\*.rsl where * is replaced with the name of any of the
example script files we supplied that you have
customised.
2) Install the latest version in your old directory and answer A for
Always to the question "Overwrite? (Yes/No/Always/Quit) [N]"
3) Copy your old files that you preserved in step (1) above back into
the directory structure either over-writing the newly installed
files or renaming as you think appropriate.
To upgrade from versions older than 1.85
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Start over!

You MUST start afresh with a new directory structure separate, distinct
and apart from the directory structure you have your obsolete versions
of Terminate already installed in.

Sorry, but we have greatly improved the program adding, amongst
other features, multi task-windows, greatly improved IEMSI capable
MiniHost with QWK Mail Door, QWK'em Offline Mail Reader, Fax Manager,
RIPscrip 1.54 graphics in both Terminal and QWK'em, REXX-like Script
Language for DOS full scripting (RSL), Prestel/Viewdata, etc, etc so
none of your old phonebook structures, configuration files, etc, etc,
remain compatible.

(This is just one of the reasons we changed the default installation
directory and executable to "TERM")

At the Operating System prompt, enter: INSTALL

(Terminate is Warp aware and should automatically detect the OS/2
environment and act accordingly))

{Please note that we can NOT help you with the English Language Test
you must pass before installation continues. We want to be sure that
people understand enough English to give their informed consent to our
licencing terms...}
*

After a successful installation, enter: T.BAT
and the first time the program runs it will attempt an intelligent
configuration.

For people who don't know much about serial communication and modems:
- don't worry about all the options!

IMPORTANT: If you don't understand a toggle or option do not change it
- just leave it as it is. The options have already been set
to give the best performance for the majority.

*

All options have been set as sensible defaults for normal use, and
there is no immediate need to change much - although you may need to
set up the following things if the intelligent configuration failed
or you aborted it:

Port Parameters:-
To change these, press [Alt] and [P] from the Terminal window.
After you have made your changes, hit "OK" for a temporary change for
that session only, or "Update" to permanently write the changes in
your configuration.

If you have a faster modem than 2400 bps, you should set your bps rate
to 19200 or 38400 or even faster (see below).

Fast modems can use data compression and if you only use 9600, you
will not be making the best of the hardware you possess for fast
transfers since your low port speed will act as a bottleneck.

Normally, for most BBS use, you use 8 databits, no parity, 1 stopbit.

If you do have a slow modem and are using 2400, you should disable
Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol in the "Change Configuration,
Communication Setup" menu.

9600bps and faster modems use Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol, which is a
safer way of sending data when using a comport at 19200 or above.
(Don't ever run 57600 bps or faster on external modems, unless you are
sure that your cable is protected from noise - try 38400 first.)

Remember you must also set RTS/CTS flowcontrol in your modem - look in
the modem manual. RTS/CTS flowcontrol requires an internal modem OR an
external modem AND a proper modem cable which has the RTS and CTS
(Request to send/Clear to send) pins connected.

"Modem and dialling" configuration menu:-
If you did not allow the program to install a modem from the pick
list at first installation, you might choose "Install modem" from
this menu now.

if your modem does not feature in the pick list ofmodems, you must set
the following things manually - or at least check if they work (Look
in your modem manual to check for further details. Remember factory
defaults on your modem may mean you won't have to change anything...):

Carrier Detect (CD) follows line (usually &C1)

Type AT&C1 and press enter

When DTR is low, line must be dropped, (Usually &D2 or &D3)

Type AT&D2 and press enter

Not all modems like this, if you can't hangup your modem, move to the
"Modem & dialling" menu and Enter a 0 at the hang-up options which
will allow Terminate to send a hangup string to your modem instead.

Type ATS0=0
Then your modem will not pick up the phone - leaving Terminate to make
the decision.

If you can save your setup in your modem, type AT&W, otherwise you
must use the initstring which combines these variouus commands:
AT&C1&D2S0=0^M

If your modem string is not sent because the carrier is high when you
start up Terminate, you should enable the switch "Force init string"
in the "Modem and dialling" menu..

If your modem is a normal Hayes compatible you don't need to set up
anything else, everything has been set up already.

*

Now you should be ready to press [Alt][D] for the phonebook and call
some of the great BBS's listed there - or make some entries of your
own!

Have fun!

----- Problems? --------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION PROBLEMS ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you run INSTALL.EXE, the files 0200TER1._XE and
0200TER2._XE (and, optionally, other files 0200TER?._XE)
all need to be in the same directory.
If you encounter any problems with our low level
installation routines (music, screen, etc,) then:
1) run INSTALL.EXE /NOINTRO instead...
OR
2) Try rebooting with a `vanilla flavour' CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT with no TSRs and making sure that
you specify at least Files=40
If INSTALL.EXE finished work, but you're having problems
starting TERM.EXE, then try to run TERM.EXE with appropriate
parameters:
/NOEMS - to disable EMS usage
and/or
/NOXMS - to disable XMS usage
and/or
/FASTCONFIG[=port[,speed]] - to pass through all the
configuration questions
and configure Terminate
manually (by setting the
port, bps, etc, etc)
or run T.BAT ? for available command-line switches.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Terminate needs at least 550k of conventional (`below 640k')
free memory to run.
(2MB extended or expanded memory can be used when you shell out
and is, therefore, highly recommended but will not remove the
REQUIREMENT for at least 550k of conventional (`below 640k')
memory so use another terminal program if you can not achieve
this minimum figure!)

If you load Terminate using the /DBG switch you will be able to
keep an eye on memory useage...

MOUSE PROBLEMS ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Try toggling PECULIAR MOUSE in CHANGE CONFIGURATION, TOGGLES
( [ALT][O], [T], toggle Peculiar mouse on/off )
PROBLEMS IN MULTITASKING ENVIRONMENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Absence of an adequate FIFO Chip (eg: 16550 UART) may cause
problems with data loss (refer to further technical
documentation...)

If you experience Screen corruption or data loss even with an
adequate FIFO, then try using FOSSIL (such as Ray Gwinn's SIO
for OS/2 Warp) or increase the VDM session priority.

Unexpected CARRIER DROP - try to increase session priority or
try to use a FOSSIL driver instead of direct COM port access.

DATA LOSS PROBLEMS UNDER DOS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Problems may also occur when running Terminate on 'slow' computers
or if the Terminate overlay file is not able to be loaded into EMS
or XMS.
These problems relate to Terminate's internal 'multitasking'
kernel and are similar to problems in a multitasking environment.
Our suggestions are:
1. Do not open windows other than the terminal window before and
during file transfers
2. Try to increase the input buffer size in Communication setup,
Receive Buffer Size:
[Alt][O], [C], select device, [Enter], [R]
3. Try to decrease Baud:
[Alt][O], [C], select device, [Enter], [B]
KEYBOARD
~~~~~~~~
If you are using an 83-keys keyboard, Change Enhanced keyboard
setting in toggles:
[Alt][O], [T], Enhanced keyboard OFF

UNRESOLVED PROBLEM(S)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you STILL have problems, check out the comms gurus on your local
BBS or the various nets.
But NOT before you have tried a `vanilla flavoured' system:
1) Create backup and archived copies of your original AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS files
2) Edit both files to remark out ALL lines that are not ABSOLUTELY
VITAL to boot your system: especially TSR's and Soundblaster
drivers and including memory management software such as QEMM.
(type "rem " at the beginning of each line you wish to render
temporarily operational)
Make sure, though, that you have a
Files=25
statement (25 is the absolute minimum number of file handles
needed) and, of course, whatever keyboard driver you need. Remove
the mouse driver at this point, though.
3) Reboot your system and Terminate should run OK.
4) Reinstate each line you previously remarked out until you discover
the culprit line that causes hiccups anew.
If the unpack procedure completed normally, and you've tried all
the advice above, but you STILL have problems, then please run
REPORT.BAT ? to create a report file for us.
When you install Terminate you agreed to the following licence
conditions and exclusions of liability:
" Notice of COPYRIGHT and EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY
On 16 April 1994 Bo Bendtsen, the original author of Terminate, agreed to
transfer all his publishing rights and copyrights for Terminate to
Intershop Limited.
Under local laws and according to the relevant international conventions,
ALL versions of Terminate are copyright 1992-95 to Intershop Limited.
All rights reserved.
In no event will Intershop Ltd or its authorised distributors be liable
to you for additional damages, including any lost profits, lost savings,
or other incidental or consequential damages arising out of the use or
inability to use Terminate or utilities for Terminate, even if Intershop
Ltd or its' authorised distributors has been advised of the possibility
of such problems.
Succinctly: By using this program, you agree not to hold Intershop Ltd
or its' authorised distributors responsible for anything other than the
code using a lot of disk space.
SHAREWARE LICENCE
Intershop Limited hereby grants to all a licence, terminable at seven
days notice placed on the Main Board area of ALMAC BBS in Scotland, to
copy and distribute Terminate version 2.00 1995 subject to the following
conditions:
ALL previous versions of Terminate (especially the illicit and fraudulent
1.5n versions) must be removed from distribution. The distributed
archives must also be complete, unmodified and without the addition of
other files.
Terminate may NEVER be sold or distributed for profit or anticipated
profit without the written permission of Intershop Limited.
Terminate may not be `bundled' with hardware without written permission
from Intershop Limited. Cost effective licences for Terminate Lite
are available for modem manufacturers and other distributors:
+44 181 500 5000
Succinctly: no one other than Intershop Limited and its' authorised
distributors may charge money for Terminate.
Neither a personalised Key File, Terminate Lite, Terminate Professional,
Terminate-for-Windows, Terminate NT or Terminate OS/2 may be copied
(other than for backup purposes) or distributed.
OFFER OF LICENCE
Intershop Ltd recognises that few non-trivial programs are 'bug-free'
and that authors, publishers, software libraries and users should work
together to improve programs. Intershop Ltd believes the Shareware
method of distribution and ongoing development (with continuous
improvements made often as a result of user input) is more realistic
than maintaining a large and expensive public relations apparatus
pretending that software is 100% correct on first release.
The Shareware (try-BEFORE-you-buy) method of distribution assists
the efforts of programmers to reach an audience that might otherwise
be deprived of new and original programs due to the often prohibitive
costs of traditional try-AFTER-you-buy marketing.
Shareware relies on trust: the publisher trusts the users to pay for
continued use of Shareware programs. But there is another element to
this relationship of trust: if an author makes promises to his users,
these promises should be kept.
Since the 19 May 1994 the delinquent actions and inaction of the original
author of Terminate, Bo Bendtsen, have put in jeopardy the ethical
framework that Shareware relies on. (Please read some of the original
material in the files BO$WELCH.TXT and LIAR_WOO.DS present in the
distribution archives if you want some interesting background reading)
Intershop Limited believes that by declaring ALL versions of Terminate
to be FREEWARE it powerfully demonstrates that greed and duplicity will
not pass unchallenged. [Intershop Ltd will pass any financial gains it
receives for this and previous versions of Terminate to the parties
that Bo Bendtsen has attempted to cheat in Russia and Europe.]
Intershop Limited hereby offers to you, the reader of this offer,
a licence to use this version of Terminate in perpetuity in return for
your agreement to report to Intershop Limited indirectly in echoes or
directly ([email protected])
a) instances of any versions previous to Terminate 2.00
being distributed in violation of our copyrights
b) any bugs found in Terminate 2.00 (And there WILL be a few - our
programming team only started coding these versions of Terminate from
scratch on the 14 July 1994 - since, despite the contract, Bo Bendtsen
did not give us a single line of code!)
Intershop Limited does NOT warrant that these bugs will be fixed nor that
Terminate users will be further supported with either technical support
or subsequent versions of Terminate. Instead, suggestions and bug reports
may well be used to improve "Project CAIN" (a commercial communication
program planned to be re-named and begin to replace Terminate on 5
September 1995)
The following registered users of Terminate now have until 22 August 1995
to obtain a free upgrade to whatever "Project CAIN" is renamed:
1) All users who registered via the Electronic REgsite,T-REGS, in Glasgow
2) All users who registered Terminate at any REGsite prior to 5 June 1994
3) All users who registered Terminate at any REGsite other than Denmark
or with Bo Bendtsen/Andy Roberts/Steve Stacher subsequent to 5 June 1994
4) All users who registered Terminate at the Denmark REGsite or with
Bo Bendtsen/Andy Roberts/Steve Stacher after 5 June 1994, who supply
sworn affidavits that they have initiated criminal prosecutions against
these culprits for fraud.
The practical details of the upgrade procedure are to be found in the
  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
