Unprotect for

LHX Attack Chopper

By Electronic Arts

After purchasing a legitimate copy of LHX, I quickly became frustrated with
having to pick up the manual and search through pages of information for
specs on a particular aircraft or weapon in response to the "copy
protection" quiz (they call it the "Aptitude Examination").

A few minutes with Periscope (an excellent debugging tool) provided this
little patch. You are still presented with the quiz screen, however any
type of reply will result in a correct answer. Note that you still must type
something ("1", "2", or anything else) followed by . Pressing
alone will not work.

Now, let's get down to business:

Step 1. Be sure that the date and size matches mine:

LHX.EXE 279729 2-23-90 8:23p

If the date or size differs from the above, this patch probably
will not work.

Step 2. COPY LHX.EXE LHX.SAF
(Keep an original around in case something goes wrong)

Step 3. REN LHX.EXE LHX
(Debug won't let you write modified .EXE files, so we'll rename it)

Step 4. DEBUG LHX
(Fire up DOS DEBUG program)

Step 5. At the "-" prompt, type "d" followed by enter. You should get
something that looks like this:

1624:0100 4D 5A B1 00 23 02 00 00-20 00 BA 04 FF FF DE 48 MZ..#... ......H
1624:0110 80 00 00 00 12 00 CB 42-1C 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 .......B........
1624:0120 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
1624:0130 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
1624:0140 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
1624:0150 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
1624:0160 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
1624:0170 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

^^^^ The number on the left of the colon (1624) will probably be
different on your system. Whatever it is, add 2000 (hex) to it.
In my case, I would end up with 3624. I will refer to this resulting
number below as "XXXX".

Step 6. Again at the "-" prompt, type the following:

E XXXX:4D1F 31 C0 (and press )

in my case, it would be:

E 3624:4D1F 31 C0

Step 7. Back at the "-" prompt, type "w" and press to write the
patched file back to disk. You should see the following:

Writing 444B1 bytes.

Step 8. Back at the "-" prompt again, type "q" to exit DEBUG and return
to DOS.

Step 9. When back at DOS, type:

REN LHX LHX.EXE

That's it! Start up LHX and see how it works. Remember, when you get to the
APTEX screen, you must answer the question with ANY reply. For example:

What is the maximum range of T-72 tank (in Km)? Answer "1" and press
. That type of thing....

Good luck and enjoy!

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
