Unprotect for Spaceward Ho! (Windows version)

Tired of looking up protection codes for that expensive program you bought?
Well we can do something about that nasty protection scheme.

Use the Norton editor (or a similar hex editor) on the hard disk copy of
WINHO.EXE (as always it is inadvisable to modify your original). Search for
the second occurence of the word "space" (found at 3F7F6 in my copy).
'Space', 'Create' thru 'Click', 'Fun' is the protection word list. Simply
replace all the words with one word like 'space'. If the old word was longer
than the new word fill with 00 (hex zeros).

Write the file out and you are done!

This scheme will also probably work for the DOS version of the game though I
haven't seen the DOS version.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
