The following documents the procedure to unprotect the copy-protected
version of Sidekick ver. 1.11c. All four sk programs calls a subroutine
to check for the modified track on the original.

The procedure is as follow:
* The user input is everything within the square bracket [].

1. Copy debug.com & all sidekick programs onto a new disk.
Put it in drive A.
2. At DOS prompt, type [debug sk.com]
A>debug sk.com
3. Then after the debug prompt, type [u 07fd]
-u 07fd
4. Pls check the following carefully. If it does not match, you have a
different version.
XXXX:07FD BC0020 MOV SP,2000
XXXX:0800 0E PUSH CS
XXXX:0801 E88686 CALL 8E8A
XXXX:0804 2E CS:
.
.
.
5. After the debug prompt, type [e 0801].
Then type [90 90 90 ]
-e 0801
XXXX:0801 E8.90 86.90 86.90
6. Then type [w q]
-w
-q
7. Now you can copy the sidekick program to your harddisk and forget
about putting in the original disk in drive A every time you
start Sidekick.

For SKN.com, the program name in step 2 is SKN.COM.
The address in step 3 is 07db. The address in step 5 is 07df.

For SKC.com, the program name in step 2 is SKC.COM.
The address in step 3 is 07b8. The address in step 5 is 07bc.

For SKM.com, the program name in step 2 is SKM.COM.
The address in step 3 is 076b. The address in step 5 is 076f.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
