How Do I Use NeverLock?

Copy one of the following from the floppy to your hard drive.
NEV_UNIV.EXE (Universal NeverLock) or
NEV_SHAR.EXE (Shareware NeverLock) or
NEV_BUSI.EXE (Business NeverLock)
Then type that name and press Enter. Watch the introduction.
At the NeverLock menu, select 'Modern Collection' or 'Classic Collection'.

Select 'Order form and license' at the NeverLock menu to see
the prices and print the order form.

Copyware Inc does NOT sell individual unlocks. Copyware products
are only available at the prices shown in the order form.

Shareware NeverLock defeats document checks on games.

CopywareInc suggests that you obtain the latest version of
Shareware NeverLock from your usual shareware distributor or BBS.
If that is not possible, you may buy Shareware NeverLock from

Business NeverLock defeats the Everlock key-diskette system on
commercial business programs. BusinessNeverLock is not

You can detect the presence of the Everlock key-diskette system
by selecting the 'SearchforEverlockhidden files' line on the
main menu. NeverLock will search all your drives (including
drives A:, B:) for hidden files such as EV21.SYS EV22.SYS
EV31.SYS EV32.SYS and inform you if Everlock is present.

Business NeverLock hunts for the hidden files of form EV*.SYS on
your hard drive or floppy drive and simulates the presence of
these files. Our success rate is 100% since Business NeverLock
is concerned only with the Everlock software that surrounds the
commercial package.

Business NeverLock successfully defeats the Everlock system on
ALL Everlock'd packages from 1988 to 1995. It's safe & easy to

What are Document Checks and Key-Diskettes ?

Document checks and special key-diskettes are schemes used by
software publishers to force purchasers of computer software to
repeatedly prove that they are the legitimate owners or licensees
of the software.

When the purchaser wishes to run the program, he/she must perform
a task. But not just once. This task must be performed every
time the purchaser wants to use the program.

The program presents a short quiz which must be answered by
searching the manual or using the code-wheel that came with the
product. Each time the quiz appears the question is different.
Once the purchaser has correctly answered this document check,
functional part of the program is allowed to begin.

Some programs insist that you insert a special key-diskette into
a floppy drive to prove your ownership of the program. This
key-diskette is cleverly designed so that it can not be copied by
commonly available methods.


What is Wrong with Document Checks and Key-Diskettes ?

These methods interfere with the secure and pleasurable use of
the computer product by legitimate customers.

Imagine getting into your brand new expensive luxury car, turning
the key and hearing a digitized voice announce: 'Please turn to
page 16 of your owners manual and enter the seventh word of
paragraph 3 into the mini-keypad on the dashboard'. Would you
put up with that every time you wanted to drive your vehicle ?
And how do you feel when you discover this annoyance AFTER you
have paid the dealer in full ?

These document checks are just plain annoying. Having to hunt
for the manual or code-wheel every time you play your game gets
to be irritating very quickly, especially if you own many games.
If that piece of paper is lost, stolen or destroyed, you are
locked out of the software that you paid for.

A diskette is a fragile thing. Each time the diskette is tested,
the head of the floppydrive makes physical contact with the
diskette. Eventually the diskette becomes unreadable, and you
find that you are locked out of your own software.

Some manufacturers supply a utility that moves a special
signature from the key-diskette to your hard drive. Usually the
key-diskette is disabled when the signature has been moved.

This method avoids the diskette friction problem and works fine
until a hard drive failure occurs. After you restore your hard
drive from backup, you discover that your install has disappeared
and you are locked out of your own software again.

You must hope that the manufacturer of the software is still in
business, still is shipping the product that you are using, and
is friendly enough to ship new materials for a reasonable fee.

In real life companies do sometimes go out of business, or will
charge outrageous fees to activate the program that you have
already paid for.

If you are lucky and find that the company is friendly, you still
are locked out of your own software for days or weeks until you
receive the requested materials.

And the best part of all ? You know it's only a matter of time
before the whole cycle repeats !


Who Should NOT Use NeverLock?

NeverLock defeats document checks on a variety of software
products. NeverLock is intended solely for the use of legitimate

Safety First

You should copy all the files of the commercial product to another
directory on your hard drive, and then use NeverLock.


Computer System Requirements for NeverLock

NeverLock requires the following:
DOS version must be DOS 5.0 up to DOS 6.2
At least 450K free conventional main memory.
2 megabytes of free hard drive space for its work files.

NeverLock is tested with the memory manager EMM386.EXE.
QEMM and others usually work, but are not guaranteed.
Avoid using any memory manager in 'stealth mode',
since 'stealth mode' often causes problems.


The NeverLock Menu

Watch the introduction until the 'Conditions of Use' appear.
Read the conditions, answer the question truthfully and the main
menu will appear.

When the main menu appears use the arrow keys to move the
highlight bar to any option and press the Enter key to select it.
The program guides you every step of the way with instructions
and dialogue boxes, and there is always help available by
pressing the F1 key. There is full mouse support if you have a
mouse driver loaded.

NeverLock defeats document checks in two steps. First it
searches the program files for the data that needs to be changed.
Then it makes those changes with no intervention from you.

At the main menu, select the product you wish to unlock from
either the 'Modern Collection' or the 'Classic Collection'. To
unlock a CDROM or Windows product, you must select a product that
contains the word CDROM or Windows.

NeverLock will then prompt you for the letter of the drive your
product is installed on. It scans this drive and shows you a
list of all the directories it found.

Select the directory where the product is installed. NeverLock
will now display a box explaining what it is about to do, and
giving you a chance to stop. If you decide to proceed, NeverLock
will search the directory you specified for files that contain
the document check.

NeverLock creates a work directory on your hard drive. The first
one will be called NEV_001, and subsequent ones are numbered
upward. It copies the original files to this work directory and
then attempts to alter these files to defeat the document check.

NeverLock will then exchange these unprotected work files for the
original files in the product directory. NeverLock leaves your
original files in its work directory. In case the newly created
files do not function properly, the originals are thus preserved.

In some cases NeverLock creates a special loader file. Watch its
report screen carefully. If necessary, it will tell you that you
must start your commercial product with the special loader file.

NeverLock monitors the whole process and presents you with a
log file that holds:
The name of the commercial product.
Any special instructions for this particular product.
What files were copied, searched, exchanged or moved.
Where the original files and the newly created files are located.
A success or failure message.

Exit NeverLock, change to the product directory and start the
product. If a quiz screen appears, just enter any answer. The
product will think your answer is correct and continue normally.

And that's all there is to it. Remember that the altered files
that are created by NeverLock are for your own use only and may
not be transmitted to another person in any form. Except for the
Shareware version which clearly identifies itself as such,
NeverLock must not be distributed to others. See the License
item on the main menu for details.







Problem:
NeverLock reports that 'The document check has been defeated',
but the game still presents the quiz and blocks your access.
Advice:
Did NeverLock give a message like this ?

IMPORTANT: READ THIS NOW !
I have created the special loader: GAME_K.EXE
You MUST follow these steps. Write them down on paper.
1) Exit from NeverLock to DOS.
2) Type: C: [Enter]
3) Type: CD \GAME [Enter]
4) Type: GAME_K [Enter]
5) Then start your game just like usual.

If you received this message then you MUST follow the instructions
and start your game with the special loader file.

Problem:
The computer crashes mysteriously when you run NeverLock, or
run the special loader file that NeverLock created.
Advice:
NeverLock sometimes crashes when run from Windows while in a
'DOS Session'. You must run NeverLock from DOS only.

A memory resident program is causing the problem.
Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to something else.
Create a new CONFIG.SYS with just one statement FILES=20.
Reboot your computer and run NeverLock again.

QEMM in stealth mode is causing the problem. Deactivate QEMM
stealth mode, reboot your computer and try again.

STACKER in combination with PC-KWIK is causing the problem.
Run NeverLock from your uncompressed drive, or disable PC-KWIK.

If you are using the screen blanker 'After Dark', remove
'AD-DOS' from your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Reboot your computer and run
NeverLock again.

Problem:
'I can only find ?,???,??? bytes of free disk space on your
system. This may not be enough space for NeverLock to copy the
product files. Do you wish to continue anyway ?'
Advice:
NeverLock needs free hard drive space to hold copies of the
product files. In some cases the files could be as large as 2
megabytes. If you have 800K of free disk space, NeverLock will
probably work anyway. With less than that, you may get an
error message that a file could not be copied or exchanged. If
the above sounds confusing, then the best solution is to free
up 2 megabytes of disk space on any hard drive on your system.

Problem:
' I was unable to copy all of the product files.'
Advice:
NeverLock could not read the product files from the source
media, or it could not write the files to its work directory.
Did the hard drive just become full ? Perhaps a memory
resident program is interfering. Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS to something else. Create a new CONFIG.SYS with
just one statement FILES=20. Reboot your computer and run
NeverLock again.

Problem:
' Insufficient memory to run program '
Advice:
NeverLock needs about 450K of main memory. Free up as much low
conventional memory as you can and then run NeverLock again.

Problem:
' The file that needs to be patched is missing '
Advice:
NeverLock couldn't find the target file that it was expecting
in the directory you specified. For most recent games, the
game itself must be installed in a directory on your hard
drive. Did you select the correct directory when NeverLock
offered the list of directories on your drive ?

The manufacturer of the game has greatly changed the game files
that contain the quiz. The file that needs to be altered is
not present in this version of the game.

Copyware Inc may be able to resolve this problem at a future
date. Register users of NeverLock are invited to call and
report the problem.

Problem:
' I could not find the bytes that must be changed.
This may be a later version of the product
or the required file was already altered. '

Advice:
The required files were present but were not what NeverLock
expected. If the name of the desired product appears more than
once on the Modern Collection list or the Classic Collection
list, try again using the next product name.

One possibility is that you are trying to defeat the document
check within a file that has already been altered by NeverLock
or a similar utility. Be sure that the required file mentioned
in the NeverLock log is actually the original authentic file
that came with the game.

Sometimes a manufacturer will re-release a game and change the
code that does the document check. The manufacturer of the
game has deliberately altered the critical files that contain
the document check. NeverLock can not find the required
pattern of bytes that need to be changed.

Copyware Inc may be able to resolve this problem at a future
date. Register users of NeverLock are invited to call and
report the problem.

NeverLock will be updated regularly to support new games. But
it will not be updated for games that are older than 2 years.
