Here's how to unprotect Mortal Kombat:
Bring up MK.EXE in your favorite hex editor. Mine is HexEdit by Mike Graham.
Go to address 370692 (5A804 hex) and replace the next 200 bytes with 0's.
(This should bring you to address 370892, or 5A8CC hex.) When you start the
game, you will still see the dumb screen. Just press Enter. You will get
into the game without reading the manual for some silly words.
