Unprotect for Faery Tale

Tired of looking up codes for that expensive program you bought? Well we can
do something about that nasty protection scheme. This documentation
protection scheme is very similar to the one used in Mean Streets. The code
words are found in all caps separated by zeroes. All we have to do is replace
them with zeroes. The code words are as follows (separated by zeroes):

(found at offset 18B7BH in FTE.EXE or 18141H in FTC.EXE in the 7/7/89 version)

Working on the hard disk copy (do not modify the original disk) and using the
NORTON editor.

NU FTE.EXE (or FTC.EXE for the CGA version)

{Esc} (press {Esc} to get to option screen)
S (Search for data)
T (Text to search for)
MIGHT (search for the first word MIGHT in caps)
S (Start search)
D (Display found text)
{F2} (switch to hex screen)
{Tab} (tab over to hex cursor and move down to the first word MIGHT)
00 (replace MIGHT thru NIGHT with zeroes)
{Enter} (press {Enter} to exit edit screen)
W (Write changed data)
{Esc} (press {Esc} till out of Norton)

That's it for the protection scheme. The program will still ask the
questions, simply press {Enter} to respond to each one.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read:
