Electronic Mail and USENET/NEWS via UUPSI

PSI's Electronic Mail and USENET/NEWS Services through UUPSI

Introduction

Performance Systems International, Inc. (PSI) is a value added network
service provider that delivers a range of products for the user of
electronic information. We are leaders in offering the means for professional
organizations and individuals to access and process information and communicate
with other professionals in product development, product applications,
government research activities, consulting and academic pursuits.

Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, PSI has focused its core business on
providing full-service, high performance computer networking to organizations
throughout the nation through PSINet.

The Need for Reliable Electronic Mail and USENET/NEWS

Using electronic mail is quite common to over 20 million daily users.
Academic collaboration, commercial acquisition and delivery of federal
contracts, product and service development, professional development in scores
of disciplines, and product support all now depend on reliable electronic mail
throughout the world. A company's internal-only electronic mail is no
substitute.

Electronic Mail is yet another means for companies to work within the global
marketplace, since working with international participants is no longer
impacted by geography or time zones. Electronic mail becomes increasingly
requisite as users include your suppliers, customers, contractors and
professional peers. Even many "competitors" use it as a strategic business
tool.

USENET/NEWS is a forum for groups to conduct national and international
dialogues on subjects ranging from law and sociology to computing,
communications, biology and medical techniques. Participants number in
the hundreds of thousands. This "bulletin board" is an effective way to post
and read about new findings, products, services or commentary within a special
interest group or a wider audience.

PSI recognized that an inexpensive, fixed-rate means to benefit from these
services was lacking. By using its dedicated, high performance national
network, service could be more consistent and communications costs could be
reduced and even eliminated in many cases. PSI offers UUPSI Electronic Mail
and USENET/NEWS services to individual and corporate users needing to simply
and inexpensively take advantage of reliable electronic communications.

The Service

With UUPSI Electronic Mail, customer mail is relayed by a PSI host (UUPSI
or uu.psi.com) to the customer computer using the UUCP protocol and a
standard modem. This capability is commonly included on hundreds of thousands
of computers using the UNIX operating system, with software also available
for MSDOS, MACOS, VMS, etc.

Both the simplicity of this technology and its common availability keeps the
entry level cost low. The growing number of dialup access points on PSINet
keeps transport costs to a minimum while reliability through the use of
dedicated, digital T1 backbone circuits is improved. The availability of
high-speed modems at the local dialup access points also increases the
efficiency of these services. PSI will also register for the customer to
receive their own unique Internet domain name at no additional cost and act
as an Internet mail forwarder for their computer system(s).

USENET/NEWS is the largest distributed bulletin board system in the world,
providing megabytes of information in hundreds of forums on a daily basis.
The NEWS customer can select a full feed or a partial feed - the fee is the
same. This service uses the UUCP protocol with local dialups. NEWS can be
even more efficiently managed and moved through TCP/IP networks using the
NNTP protocol. Customers may wish to pursue this approach if they have a
direct IP connection to PSINet. NNTP service is not provided by PSI to the
general Internet community.

PSI's flat-fee pricing allows for more accurate planning and budgeting without
limiting use of this communications resource. There are no additional usage
fees.

Why Subscribe?

UUPSI exists as a dedicated communications relay for both Electronic Mail and
USENET/NEWS. It is maintained by a professional staff with extensive
experience in communications and system administration. Due to its connection
to major NEWS distribution sites and the Internet, Mail and NEWS service is
extremely reliable. Our communications infrastructure is fully distributed
in dedicated Telco facilities (POPs), not on customer premises.

The Network Information and Support Center (NISC)

The NISC is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days per week by PSI technicians,
operators, engineers and UNIX system administrators. They are responsible
for all aspects of the PSI facilities and services. PSI staff uses the SNMP
standard to manage its network systems. PSI also has considerable telephony
and systems administration experience to insure all pieces of these services
are handled reliably and professionally. Status and trouble reporting are
available through the NISC at 1.800.836.0400, or 1.518.283.8860.

"Under the Hood"

UUPSI is a dedicated 30 MIP SPARC machine located in Albany, NY at the PSI
NISC. It is directly connected to the PSINet T1 backbone which provides our
Standard Connection internetworking service. Throughout the United States
are local dialup numbers with V.22 bis (2400 baud), V.32 (9600 baud) and
Telebit/PEP modems. UUCP connections for Mail and NEWS can be sustained
through these local numbers to UUPSI.

Customer Requirements

To facilitate these services, it is expected that the user have a computer
which supports the UUCP protocol, and a modem connected to the public
telephone system.

PSI staff can assist you with any questions about the acquisition and use of
the various communications tools needed, along with recommending useful
reading materials. They can also accomplish the domain name registration
and configuration for the customer.
