Subject: WordPerfect Attachments Do Not Fax

Situation:
==========
When faxing a WordPerfect for Windows file from WinFax, the following
appears...

WinFax cannot send the binary file
[Drive:\Path\Filename]

...along with a message saying that the program needed to print this file
cannot be found.

The result is that the WordPerfect for Windows file is not sent.

Solution:
=========
This situation only occurs when you attach WordPerfect for Windows within
WinFax to be made into attachments "on the fly".

WordPerfect does not automatically add a filename extension to its files,
like .TXT or .DOC. Windows uses a filename extension registry to keep
track of the applications associated with particular files. This situation
occurs because Windows cannot find the program associated with printing
out the WordPerfect for Windows file.

1. Add Filename Extensions WordPerfect Recognizes
-------------------------------------------------
Rename your WordPerfect files with consistent filename extensions, for
example:

.WPD
.FRM
.WPT

Using these extensions, Windows will be able to locate and use WordPerfect
to print out the file to WinFax when it is to be faxed.

2. Associate a Filename Extension to WordPerfect
------------------------------------------------
The following procedure will link a filename extension of your choice with
WordPerfect:

- Launch File Manager
- From the File menu select Associate. The Associate dialog appears.
- In the File Name Extension Field type in any three characters of your
choice, for example:

WP6

Note: Do not choose an extension associated with another application.

- From the Associate With scroll box, choose the WordPerfect for
Windows selection that appears. The exact description will differ
according to the version of WordPerfect you use.
- Click OK.

You can successfully send a WordPerfect file attached "on the fly" in WinFax
using this new extension.

3. Verifying that a Filename Extension will Work with WordPerfect and
WinFax
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To check if a WordPerfect for Windows file is properly associated in
Windows, do the following:

- Create a WordPerfect file using one of the filename extensions
listed above.
- Run File Manager, then locate the WordPerfect for Windows file you just
created.
- Double-click the filename.

If WordPerfect is launched, WinFax PRO 4.0 will be able to send this file
as a fax when selected as an attachment from within WinFax.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
