Subject: WinFax PRO and PCMCIA Modems

Situation:
==========
WinFax PRO is unable to communicate with your PCMCIA fax/modem.

Solution:
=========
All PCMCIA fax/modem cards rely upon software drivers to operate. Software
drivers are needed to tell the notebook computer how it should connect to
and operate with the PCMCIA fax/modem. Most of the problems that arise with
PCMCIA drivers and WinFax PRO have to do with either the driver software
itself, or how it is set up and working with the notebook.

1. Ensure that your PCMCIA fax/modem card is inserted into your Notebook
computer before you switch on the computer. The software drivers needed
to operate the PCMCIA card are loaded when the computer boots up. If
the PCMCIA card is inserted after you have booted up, the notebook will
not be able to recognize that the PCMCIA fax/modem is there and
available for use.

2. Make sure that you have the latest PCMCIA driver software from your
Notebook manufacturer. Typically, the version number of these drivers
can be found on the PCMCIA diskettes that come either with your PCMCIA
fax/modem or your notebook computer. Call your Notebook manufacturer
and ask for the date and version of their latest PCMCIA fax/modem driver
software. If they have a version that is more recent than the one you
have, ask for the upgrade.

3. Notebook manufacturers know the optimal software driver settings for how
PCMCIA cards should be used with their notebooks. Check with your
notebook manufacturer to see that the settings necessary to operate your
PCMCIA fax/modem are correct.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
