STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
ERROR RUNNING NORTON DISK DOCTOR
(Applies to Stacker 4.0 & Norton Utilities 7 & 8)
STAC FAX 4408 (06-03-1994)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

BACKGROUND

Disk repair utilities such as Symantec's Norton Disk Doctor (NDD)
are not aware of Stacker's new SmartPack technology. If you run
NDD against a Stacker 4.0 drive you will receive an error message
that the Container Volume File for drive x appears to be
seriously damaged or that the compressed volume is unsupported.
NDD further recommends that you use the utilities provided with
the compression program. However, you can run NDD against your
Stacker drive if you skip compression tests.

SOLUTION

You may skip compression tests in two ways: from the command line
or from the NDD menu.

1. If you start NDD from the command line, type: NDD /NOCOMP
drive: . NDD will not give you the error message.
2. If you wish to turn off compression tests from the NDD menu,
start the program as usual. From the main menu select
Options. From the Options menu select General. Select Skip
Compression Tests, then OK, and OK again to return to the
main menu.
3. Run NDD as usual. NDD will not give you the error message
about the seriously damaged Container Volume File.
4. Windows users: If you run NDD from Windows (Norton Utilities
version 8), or have Norton Destop for Windows version 3, you
may skip compression tests in the following manner:
a. Open NDD. From the menu bar, select Option, then
Preferences.
b. Click on the box for Skip Compression Test.
c. Click on OK to save the changes. Then run NDD on any
drive you desire.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
