TITLE : Mastering Paradox Access

The Paradox Access feature is an example of Borland's focus on
interoperability among its products. If you load Paradox 3.5
with the necessary command line parameters, you can then load
Quattro Pro while in Paradox, by pressing CTRL-F10. This feature
lets you access Paradox files within Quattro Pro. Once inside
Quattro Pro, you can format the Paradox table using Quattro Pro's
fonts, line drawings, and graphing features, and manipulate the
data using various spreadsheet features. Once you have formatted
the information in your table, you can print it, save the data as
a new Paradox .DB file, and/or save the file as a Quattro Pro
spreadsheet.

This Technical Information sheet is provided in addition to the
discussion of the Paradox Access in your Quattro Pro manuals. We
recommend that you read the instructions for installing Paradox
Access in Chapter 18 of your User's Guide before you continue.
This sheet discusses the requirements for Paradox Access, a quick
overview of system settings, a step-by-step installation process,
and common errors and associated solutions.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Install Quattro Pro and Paradox.

2. Examine the CONFIG.SYS file. Verify that a FILES
statement exists, and is set to a value greater than or
equal to forty (e.g., FILES=40). Also, check your system
to verify that at least two megabytes of additional memory
is configured as EXTended memory, and not EXPanded memory.
If you see a DEVICE statement in the CONFIG.SYS file, such
as DEVICE=QEMM.SYS or DEVICE=EMM386.SYS, make sure it is
not reconfiguring all of your EXTended memory as EXPanded.
Users with only two megabytes of total system memory will
need to remove (or remark out) the device driver which
converts the EXTended memory to EXPanded. Users with more
than two megabytes of RAM must configure at least two
megabytes as EXTended, and are encouraged to configure
some of the remaining RAM as EXPanded memory in order for
Quattro Pro to create larger spreadsheets. See Chapter 18
of the User's Guide for details on Tweaking memory for
systems with more than 2 megabytes of RAM.

3. After making your changes, save the edited CONFIG.SYS
file.

4. Examine the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Look for the
DOS SHARE command. If the SHARE command does not appear,
add it. In order to run Paradox Access, SHARE must be
loaded. Check for a PATH statement. Make sure Quattro
Pro is in your PATH and it appears prior to the Paradox
path in the file. If Quattro Pro is not already in the
path, add it. A sample path statement within AUTOEXEC.BAT
might appear as follows:

PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\QPRO;C:\PDOX35

5. If you change your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, remember to save it.

6. Reboot your computer.

7. Load Quattro Pro and choose /Options |Other | Paradox.
From this menu, select Network Type and choose the
appropriate type, or choose Other if you are running on a

stand alone system. Select Directory and enter the
appropriate directory for the PARADOX.NET file (network
users will enter the network drive and path as set in
Paradox, stand alone users will enter any data directory).
Select Quit to exit this menu and immediately select
Update. Exit Quattro Pro.

8. If you are running Paradox on a stand-alone system,
NUPDATE must be executed to define the location for the
PARADOX.NET control file. If this is not done, Quattro
Pro will not be able to access the .DB files in the
private directory. When prompted for a network type,
select Other. Then, specify the location for the control
file. The best location is the root directory (ie. C:\).
Quattro Pro and Paradox should point to the same
PARADOX.NET control file.

9. If Paradox is running on a network and a control file has
already been set up, executing NUPDATE is not necessary
since the network administrator has already done the
setup. Verify the directory with the administrator.

10. At DOS, change to your Paradox directory and type:

Paradox custom

11. This command loads Paradox and executes the Custom
Configuration Program, which allows you to set your
default DATA and PRIVATE directories. Your DATA directory
is the directory which stores your Paradox tables. This
directory can be on a local drive (eg. C:\DATA), or it can
be on a shared network directory (such as P:\PDOXDATA).
The command for establishing this directory is:

Defaults | SetDirectory

12. Enter the the drive and path (e.g. C:\PDOX35\DATA) and
press ENTER.

13. The PRIVATE directory holds private and temporary files,
and is important for network users. For security
purposes, Paradox locks this directory so no other user
can access its files. Quattro Pro will report an error

message when trying to manipulate and save files in this
directory. To set this directory, choose:

Net |SetPrivate

14. If you are not on a network, use the root directory
(eg. C:\) as your PRIVATE directory. If you are on a
network, choose any directory to which you have full
rights. This can be either a network drive or your local
hard drive. Your DATA and PRIVATE directories must be
different in order for Paradox Access to function
properly. Finally, choose TUNE from the Custom
Configuration menu, and set Paradox to run in Protected
Mode:

Tune | ProtectedMode | Configure
DefaultMode | Protected | Return | Return

15. Press F2 (DO-IT!). This verifies your choices and records
them as the new defaults.

16. Start Paradox using the PXACCESS.BAT file. This batch
file includes a number of commands to make sure that
Paradox will be ready to access Quattro Pro.

17. After starting Paradox, press CTRL-F10. Quattro Pro
starts and a blank spreadsheet named ANSWER.DB or
SHEET1.WQ1 appears. If it does not, read the following
section on possible error messages.

ERROR MESSAGES: CAUSES & SOLUTIONS

- "BEEP"

- If Paradox 3.5 beeps when you press CTRL-F10, you did not
loaded Paradox using the PXACCESS.BAT file. Exit Paradox
and type PXACCESS at the Paradox directory.

- "Can not load Quattro Pro"

- Four possible causes exist:

1. QPRO is not in the path

2. Paradox is not in Protected Mode

3. FILES statement in CONFIG.SYS is less than 40

4. There is insufficient memory to run both Paradox
and Quattro Pro.

- Read the previous section to edit the path statement, edit
the CONFIG.SYS file, change the mode in the Custom
Configuration Program, or unload memory resident programs
(TSR's) to free up RAM.

- "Can not start Paradox, not enough memory"

- Check available memory prior to loading Paradox. Paradox
requires 640K RAM and 1.4MB of EXTended memory (2MB total)
to load with the Access. Unload terminate and stay
resident (TSR) software (eg. menu programs, PCTOOLS,
SideKick, etc.) to free conventional RAM for Paradox.

- "Can't lock file for reading [writing]"

- Quattro Pro requires the location of the Paradox control
file, PARADOX.NET, to access tables in the private and
shared data directories. Exit Paradox and load Quattro
Pro. Set the path, using /Options |Other | Paradox
|Directory. For stand-alone users, this directory is

probably C:\. For network users, this file is probably
located in the DATA directory of Paradox on the network.
Ask your network administrator for its location. Also,
set the Network Type in this menu. Non-network users and
users with unsupported networks should choose Other. Quit
to the main menu, choose /Options | Update, and exit
Quattro Pro. Load Paradox. Press CTRL-F10 to restart
Quattro Pro. If errors persist, the Paradox data and
private directories are not defined properly. Reset a

permanent location for each using the Custom Configuration
Program.

- Step 5 of this installation guide is often overlooked, and
as a result, the PRIVATE directory defaults to the QPRO
directory (since the PRIVATE directory is the directory
from which Paradox is loaded using PXACCESS.BAT). This
causes a conflict because the DATA and PRIVATE directories
are the same.

- "Can not Save or Create a Paradox temporary file"

- You cannot name a .DB file using the name of a table which
Paradox routinely creates as a temporary file. Thus, you
cannot save ANSWER.DB since it is an invalid name.
However, you can easily change the name to ANSWER1.DB and
save it without error.

ADVANCED OPTIONS

Advanced users of Quattro Pro and Paradox have a number of
options for loading Paradox without using the PXACCESS.BAT file.
The PXACCESS.BAT file is simply the following commands:

SHARE
PARADOX -qpro -leavek 512 -emk 0

This batch file is not necessary for those familiar with all of
the command line parameters available in Paradox. Some useful
command line parameters are:

-QPRO [enables Paradox Access function]
-LEAVEK 512 [used with -EMK to leave QPRO memory]
-EMK 0 [used with -LEAVEK to allocate EMM to QPRO]
-PROT [loads Paradox in Protected Mode]
-SHARE [enables Paradox network features]
-NET P:\PDOXDATA\ [sets the directory for PARADOX.NET]

Thus, if you load Paradox by typing:

SHARE
PARADOX -QPRO -LEAVEK 512 -EMK 0 -PROT -SHARE -NET P:\PDOXDATA\

you will enable Paradox with Quattro Pro access, leave 512K for
Quattro Pro to use as EXPanded memory (provided a device driver
exists in the CONFIG.SYS file to convert it from EXTended to
EXPanded), prevent Paradox from using any remaining EXPanded
memory, run in Protected Mode, invoke network features and
protection, and define a specific directory as the home of the
Paradox network control file.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
