Introduction
------------

The disk provided with this application note contains MESSAGES.TXT, a
text file with an alphabetical listing of Microsoft MS-DOS version 5.0
messages and their descriptions. Please follow the instructions below
to view the contents of this file.

Viewing MESSAGES.TXT
--------------------

1. Insert the enclosed PD0489 disk in drive A.

2. Copy MESSAGES.TXT to the directory containing your MS-DOS files. At
the command prompt, type the following and press ENTER:

copy a:\messages.txt c:\dos\messages.txt

Note: If you are copying MESSAGES.TXT from a drive other than A,
substitute the appropriate drive letter for "a" in the above
command. If your MS-DOS files are located in a directory other
than C:\DOS, make the appropriate change to the destination path
in the above command. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS
User's Guide and Reference" for more information on the COPY
command. It is not necessary to copy MESSAGES.TXT to your hard
drive, but it is generally faster to view a file as large as
MESSAGES.TXT from a hard drive rather than a floppy drive.

3. Use MS-DOS 5.0 Editor or Shell to view the contents of
MESSAGES.TXT.

* To use MS-DOS Editor to view MESSAGES.TXT, type the following at
the command prompt and press ENTER:

edit c:\dos\messages.txt

You can use the arrow keys to scroll through the messages, or
you can use the Find command on the Editor Search menu to locate
a specific message. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS
User's Guide and Reference" for more information on using
Editor.

If Editor reports there is insufficient memory to load
MESSAGES.TXT, you may need to free up conventional memory by
unloading other programs. For example, if you are running Editor
from a shell program such as MS-DOS Shell or Microsoft Windows,
completely exit the shell and try to start Editor again. Be
certain that you are exiting the shell program completely and
not just "shelling out" to the command prompt. Please refer to
your shell program's documentation for instructions on exiting
the program. Also, if you are loading memory-resident (terminate-
and-stay-resident, or TSR) programs, unload these programs and
try to start Editor again.

Note: When exiting Editor be sure to not save any changes you
may have made to MESSAGES.TXT.

* To use MS-DOS Shell to view the contents of MESSAGES.TXT, start
Shell by typing the following at the command prompt and then
pressing ENTER:

dosshell

Once in Shell, highlight MESSAGES.TXT in the file list and press
function key F9 to invoke the file viewer. You can use the arrow
keys to scroll through the file. Please refer to your "Microsoft
MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for more information on using
Shell.

Printing MESSAGES.TXT
---------------------

If you choose to print MESSAGES.TXT, you can use the MS-DOS PRINT
command. Type the following command at the command prompt, then press
ENTER:

print c:\dos\messages.txt

Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for
more information on the PRINT command.

WARNING: MESSAGES.TXT is a very large file (in excess of 70
pages) and can require considerable time to print. Please take
this into consideration before choosing to print this file.
