OPERATION OF TOG1.ASM ASYNC TEST SOFTWARE

Greg DeJager 1/17/89

National Semiconductor Corporation

Intro:
This program is written in 8086 assembly language and performs an
asynchronous, full-duplex communications test between two PCs. UART
registers are polled for servicing. Toggling of the RTS line and
polling for DCTS indications are used for flow control.

Hardware Setup:
Two IBM PC\AT compatible machines with a null-modem, RS-232 cable
connecting their serial ports. The null-modem cable must have the
following twisted pair connections:
pin 2 TX -------------- RX pin 3
3 RX -------------- TX 2
4 RTS--------------CTS 5
5 CTS--------------RTS 4

Software Setup:
The executable version of the software is called TOG1.EXE which addresses
COM1.

Operation:
Insert a diskette containing this software into an available floppy disk
drive on each machine and make that the current drive. To start test,
on both machines type: TOG1

The program prints a 1 or 0 every 16 characters received. Error messages
are printed for bad characters received, line status errors and transmitter
timeout. Transmitter timeout occurs if a change in the CTS modem control
input line (DCTS) is missed causing the program to halt character transmission.

A -alt-delete must be used to stop programs.

  1. Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!

  2. This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.

  3. But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
