I N T R O D U C T I O N


OVERVIEW
________

The Vehicle Record System Plus consists of a series of menu driven
program modules which are designed to help you track expenses for
all of your vehicles. With it you will be able to determine and
analyze individual vehicle costs for any period of time. It can be
customized for use in many countries.

The Vehicle Record System can be used to remind you when to service
your vehicles. It will tell you what maintenance operations need to
be done, when they need to be done, and which ones are overdue.

It will track vehicles by odometer or by hours. Boats, private
planes or other vehicles with an accumulative hour meter can be
tracked by the VRS Plus.

The VRS was first released in 1986 and was written in compiled BASIC.
This version (2.0 - VRS Plus) has been completely rewritten in
Clipper and includes many new features and enhancements that have
been requested by individuals and businesses. The VRS is being used
in the U.S., Canada, Australia and England.

The VRS Plus is geared toward home users and businesses needing to
track a few vehicles. It runs on a single system (not networked) and
does not specifically track parts inventory, driver history, vendors,
etc. Those features will be included in the next Fleet version
(available in mid-1991).



REGISTRATION AND PERMISSION TO COPY
___________________________________

If you purchased the VRS Plus directly from us, K-Jon Software, then
you are already registered. If you purchased it elsewhere then you
should complete and return the Registration Form.

Registered users will be notified of updates and will be eligible for
reduced prices on upgrades and any other products that we may develop
in the future.

This software is protected by both United States Copyright Law and
International Treaty provisions. KÄJon Software holds the copyrights
to both the software and the documentation and leases them to licensed
users. You may make archival copies of the software for the purpose of
backing up your software and protecting your investment from loss.
You may not make copies of the software or documentation to give to
someone else to use.

WARRANTY
________

K-Jon Software warrants the physical diskettes and documentation to
be free of defects in materials for a period of 60 days from the date
of purchase.

K-Jon Software specifically disclaims all other warranties, expressed
or implied, including but not limited to, implied warranties of
merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose with respect to
defects in the diskettes and documentation, and the program license
granted herein, in particular, and without limiting operation of the
program license with respect to any particular application, use, or
purpose.

In no event shall K-Jon Software be liable for any loss of profit or
any other commercial damage, including but not limited to special,
incidental, consequential or other damages.

This Statement shall be construed, interpreted and governed by the
laws of the state of Idaho.



SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
___________________

To run the Vehicle Record System Plus you will need the following:

* IBM PC XT or compatible
* 1 hard (fixed) disk
* 640K RAM internal memory
* 80 column monochrome or color monitor
* PC-DOS or MS-DOS, version 2.0 or later
* Printer


The VRS Plus requires a hard drive (primarily for speed) and 640K of
RAM is recommended. A 286 or faster computer may also be necessary
for acceptable performance.

The Vehicle Record System distribution disk is not copy-protected.
Please refer to the Registration and Permission to Copy section for
restrictions on copying.


The VRS Plus distribution disk contains the following files:

README - general information
COMMENTS.DOC - user comments for previous VRS versions
TESTSITE.DOC - comments received from VRS Plus test sites

GO.BAT - displays README file (enter GO)
COMMENTS.BAT - displays COMMENTS.DOC file (enter COMMENTS)
CA.BAT - displays TESTSITE.DOC file (enter CA)

KJONVRS.EXE - VRS program (compressed)
KJON.BAT - uncompresses KJONVRS.EXE file



WHAT TO DO FIRST
________________

Two statements need to be added to your CONFIG.SYS file. This file
contains a list of commands that set up your system and should be in
the root directory of the drive you start your computer with. If you
do not have this file you will need to create it. (Refer to the DOS
manual if you are not sure what the CONFIG.SYS file is and how to
create it).


These statements need to be included in the CONFIG.SYS file:

FILES=20
BUFFERS=8


If these statements are already in the file then just make sure that
the numbers are not less than 20 and 8. You must reboot the computer
before any changes to the CONFIG.SYS file will take effect.

WHAT TO DO NEXT - TRANSFERRING THE VRS TO YOUR COMPUTER

Put the VRS Plus disk in drive A (or B?) and get to your hard drive
prompt. We will assume your hard drive is C and the prompt is C>.
Then enter the following:

C>CD\
C>MD\VRS90
C>CD\VRS90
C>COPY A:KJON*.*
C>KJON


The VRS Plus files will be expanded (uncompressed) into the VRS90
directory and 2 data subdirectories will be created (DEMO & VRS1).



R U N N I N G T H E P R O G R A M S


GETTING STARTED
_______________

Load the VRS Plus by switching to the \VRS90 directory and entering
VRS. If your hard drive is C and you have a color monitor, you are
ready to go otherwise press SF3 (Shift-F3). Change COLOR to N if you
do not have color and/or change the DRIVE to match your letter.

The VRS Plus comes with an example vehicle (in the DEMO subdirectory).
When you first load the VRS, it will be the Selected Vehicle. Run the
different modules, Fuel, Tires, etc. to see how the programs work and
to get an idea of how you can make your entries. Be sure to read all
of the Help screens in all modules for more information.

NOTE: You should look at the different logs for the Example vehicle
before replacing any of the system codes (paid, maintenance,
etc.) with your own codes. Run the reports to see how totals
are broken out by these codes.

(The codes we used will probably be different than the ones
you will choose to use - see Help in SF3 Set Defaults).

ONLINE HELP
_________________________

Read all the help screens for the VRS Plus. The Help option on the
Main Menu explains what keys to press to move around, add or update
records, etc. Some logs may have unique features that are explained
in the individual log help screens.

Help screens can be printed by printing all the *.HLP files in the
\VRS90 directory. Help files can also be changed or modified by using
an ASCII type word processing or text editor program.



BACKUP PROCEDURE
________________

Store the Vehicle Record System Plus distribution disk in a safe
place. You should make a backup copy of the distribution disk and
store it at home or in another off-site location. (Use the DOS
DISKCOPY command to do this).

Certain files should be backed up in case you should ever need to
restore your vehicle data files due to a data error, theft or other
unforseen reasons. These files should be backed up after you make
any updates to your vehicles.


The following files should be included in your floppy disk, tape
or other type of backup:

Directory: \VRS90
VRS.COD
VRS.SET
VRS.VEH
VRS.VIN

\VRS90\VRS1
CAR1*.* (replace CAR1 with the FILENAME of
your vehicle(s)).

\VRS90\???? (if you create other vehicle data sub-
CAR2*.* directories, be sure to back them up
also.)


If you need to restore these files, then copy them from the backup
to the appropriate directories using DOS commands or by following
the instructions for your backup software (if you are using a
specialized backup program).

UPGRADING FROM VERSION 1.2 (VRS 20)
___________________________________

The data files from the Vehicle Record System version 1.2 are NOT
compatible for use with the VRS Plus. A program that will change your
v1.2 vehicle files to the proper format for this version is available.
Request this program if you are upgrading from the VRS 20.



ERROR MESSAGES
______________

If you are using the VRS Plus and a system or program error occurs
that is not handled within the program the VRS will end, you will be
returned to the DOS prompt, and a message will show on the screen.

If you have an error that cannot be explained and that happens only
when you run the Vehicle Record System, try running the system on
another computer if possible. If not possible or if the error still
exists, write it down using the Product Support Request form and send
it to us. Give as much information as you can. We need to know exactly
what you were doing in order to recreate the error. In some cases, the
problem may be resolved faster if you include a disk containing the
files that you back up. (Refer to the Backup Procedure section.)

If a file that is required by the VRS is not found, ie. VRS.SET, a
screen will display telling you which file was not found. This should
not occur unless the program was incorrectly installed or a file was
removed or deleted by someone. If this happens, copy that file from
the distribution disk or from your vehicle data backup disk.



ORDERING INFORMATION
____________________

Use the order form if you are using the shareware version of the
VRS Plus and want to order the complete version. There are 2 options
available for ordering the complete version.

The first option is to order the VRS Plus. If you check this option,
you will get the complete compressed system (like the shareware
version) but it will allow for an unlimited number of vehicles. You
will need to reinstall the system from the beginning (like the share-
ware version).

The second option is to order the VRS Plus Unlock program. This is a
program that will remove the 2 vehicle limit and also the shareware
notice that displays when first loading the VRS Plus. This program
will allow you to upgrade from the shareware version without
reinstalling the entire system.
