CHAPTER 7. MULTI-DISK MEALS & SHOPPING LISTS

ADVANCED MENU PLANNING
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Every BOOK-ON-DISK contains information that links it to a
collection of thousands of recipes from chefs all over the world.
The link is established through the Micro Kitchen Companion.
From the Main Menu, select ADVANCED FEATURES for a set of
choices that can let you combine information from several disks
or files: Meal Planning and Shopping List.
The Meal Planning Menu is used to create a record of your
selections from one or more disks that can be retrieved at any
time for printing or display. The Shopping List Menu similarly
lets you combine ingredients from many recipes into a single
list. It even lets you organize the list by store aisles.
In both cases you will select a meal or list (or create a new
one), then return to the main menu. You will then search for
recipes, mark your choices, and add the marked choices to the
meal or list. Hours, days, months or even years later, your
computer will automatically reconstruct the meal anytime you
reselect the meal or list, and print or display its contents.
You can print or display a meal or list via either the
Introductory Menu or the Main Menu.

MEAL PLANNING
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
To begin, select Meal Planning Menu from Advanced Features.
Before you have any meals stored, you must first create a new
meal. Follow the menu and on-screen prompts.
This process creates an empty file that you will fill with recipe
names, alternative choices and notes.
Next, return to the Main Menu. Now search for your choices and
mark them. As you go, you'll notice that any recipe can be added
to the selected meal instantly by choosing (A)dd to Meal. If you
have more than two or three choices, however, it is more
efficient to first mark your selections, then go to the Meal
Planning Menu and choose Add Marked Receipes.
Either way, the name of each recipe will appear in the meal file.
When highlighted, any recipe can be moved in position or to the
alternate file simply by moving your arrow key up or down. To
highlight a new recipe, first select it by number.
You can remove recipes from the meal (DELETE) without deleting
the actual recipe from your disk. And, you can add a page of
notes by selecting (N)otes.
Once you have selected a meal, Micro Kitchen Companion will make
sure that you save any changes, if you wish, before exiting the
program. And you can save or clear your recipe marks for later
use.

MEAL RETRIEVAL
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
If you are like most of us, sometimes you create a masterpiece
that is just right for another occasion. When the time comes,
just select the meal, and choose Print or Display the Meal.
Recipe, by recipe, with complete notes and detail, your
selections can be shown or printed at will.

MEAL PLANNING FROM MORE THAN ONE FILE OR DISK
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Whether you have one disk drive or a complete hard disk system,
you can combine recipe disks anyway you choose. Simply select an
existing meal, and add your recipes from America Cooks American,
for example. Now, change disks. Select the same meal, and add
recipes from Chachie Dupuy's New Orleans Home Style Cooking.
Keep adding as many as you like.
Later, when you retrieve the meal, Micro Kitchen Companion will
open the right files on a hard disk, or prompt you to insert the
right recipe disks on a floppy system.
* When using the Meal Planning feature, keep in mind that
recipes are stored by disk name, recipe name and recipe number.
If you change any of these items after creating the meal, Micro
Kitchen Companion will not be able to locate the recipe. A sure
way to avoid this problem is to make backup copies of all of your
original recipe disks, before you make changes.

SHOPPING LISTS
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Simple shopping lists can be printed from nay of the regular
print routines.
For more advanced lists, choose Shopping List Menu from the
Advanced Features list. Follow the directions for Meal Planning
(previous chapter), substituting Shoping List wherever you find
Meal Planning, to create a new shopping list.
Ingredients can then be added as you search for recipes, or all
at once from marked recipes.
Since you probably have some ingredients already on hand, and
since you may need things not listed in the recipes, you will be
prompted to identitfy the items you want, and allowed to add or
edit the entire list.
And for the very well organized soul, any item can be moved at
will, simply by highlighting the ingredient in the list, and
moving it where you choose with the up and down arrow keys.
Very nice! Thank you for this wonderful archive. I wonder why I found it only now. Long live the BBS file archives!
This is so awesome! 😀 I’d be cool if you could download an entire archive of this at once, though.
But one thing that puzzles me is the “mtswslnkmcjklsdlsbdmMICROSOFT” string. There is an article about it here. It is definitely worth a read: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/mtswslnk/
