1.1 Introducing The Personal Entertainment Guide
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide (TM) is the first television listing
magazine implemented on a personal computer. Like printed magazines,
the Personal Entertainment Guide contains feature articles, program
listings, grid listings and program break-outs by type and category.
But that's where the similarities end - the Personal Entertainment
Guide brings the television listings magazine into the age of the
personal computer. For now on, using a printed television magazine
will be like using a calculator instead of an electronic spreadsheet,
or a typewriter instead of a word processor.
Two decades ago, the channel line-up for even the biggest television
market was 7 VHF and a few UHF channels. Now, with cable reaching a
majority of television viewers, channel line-ups are typically 60 to
80 channels, and in some areas, 150 channels.
Despite these advances, program listings themselves haven't changed
significantly since the 1950's. A 75 channel line-up means having a
choice of more than 10,000 programs a week, with more than 1000 movie
titles. Printed magazines just can't keep up. As channel line-ups
grow longer, TV magazine publishers have to keep cutting the amount
and accessibility of program detail. The alternative is to mail out a
phonebook-size magazine every week - or transmit the listings
electronically.
Chances are that you are missing programs and movies you want to see
(and are paying to see) because you forgot they were on at a
particular time - or didn't know they were on in the first place.
Now that you have the Personal Entertainment Guide, you can have
unprecedented control of your TV watching and taping schedule.
What are the advantages of using the Personal Entertainment Guide?
First, the Personal Entertainment Guide provides complete listings -
with more channels and program information than any single source
currently available. Second, the Personal Entertainment Guide
provides program listings earlier than most weekly magazines. In most
cases, the Personal Entertainment Guide subscriber is able to view
listings up to three weeks in advance of air-time. Third, the
Personal Entertainment Guide provides unprecedented detail. For
example, the listing for most movies in the Personal Entertainment
Guide contains a synopsis, year of release, MPAA rating, quality
rating, director and six actors. The Personal Entertainment Guide
includes episode titles and descriptions of even the oldest syndicated
shows.
Finally, because the Personal Entertainment Guide is implemented on a
computer, it can be used to perform database-type searches and produce
customized listings. You can set up permanent "folders" to search for
movies and programs of interest to you. In this way, you can decide
what to watch on television without even looking at a TV program
listing.
The Personal Entertainment Guide is not an on-line service. Once a
week, at a convenient day and time, you must download the next issue
of the magazine. The data is delivered to your personal computer via
telephone and modem from CompuServe's Consumer Electronics Forum (type
GO CEFORUM). This weekly transmission is highly concentrated so that
the details of the 10,000 programs can be sent to you in only 5
minutes at 9600 baud (best deal!) or 20-25 minutes at 2400 Baud. Once
you receive your issue of the Personal Entertainment Guide, you do not
have to use the telephone and modem again to access the television
listings, folders and feature articles - they are immediately
available to you on your personal computer.
1.2 Computer Requirements
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide has the following minimum hardware
and operating system requirements:
- IBM-compatible XT, AT, 386, 486, PS/1, PS/2 Personal Computer,
running DOS 2.1 or greater,
- 640K of memory (runs in 512K with DOS 5.0),
- a hard disk with approximately 3 MB of free space,
- CGA, EGA or VGA or compatible monitor (please note, mono
and Hercules adapters are NOT supported)
- in your CONFIG.SYS file, files should be at least 20,
(FILES=20), and buffers should be at least 20 (BUFFERS=20), the
more the better. Disk cache software is very useful and highly
recommended for making the Personal Entertainment Guide run
faster.
The Personal Entertainment Guide is compatible with WINDOWS 3.0, 3.1
(with certain restrictions), various TSR programs, networks and system
configurations. Conflict may arise if programs or drivers use too
much 640K memory for the Personal Entertainment Guide programs to run.
1.3 Installation
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
In order to run The Personal Entertainment Guide, you must prepare the
PEG database.
Step 1. Make a unique directory in which to work with PEG. All
PEG files must be placed in this directory, and this
directory must be the default directory when running any
PEG programs. Example: \PEG2.
Step 2. Download or copy the file PEGWAR.EXE to the PEG
directory. Optionally, download or copy PEGFOL.EXE if
you want PEG's more advanced functions.
Step 3. Decompress the files by executing them - they are
self-extracting LHARC files.
Step 4. Download or copy one, two or three TV listings files.
Each file contains a week's worth of listings. The
format for these files is "ccwww.EXE" where cc is a
city designator, and www is a week number. For example,
the New York Metropolitan area file for the week of
5/9/92 is NY121.ZIP. The file for 5/16/92 is NY122.ZIP,
etc. Decompress these files by executing them.
Step 5. Type PEGBATCH at the DOS prompt. The first screen will
show you your authorization, and when it expires. If you
got to this screen, your authorization has not expired.
Press ENTER and the program will show you what TV listing
files it recognizes on the hard disk, whether they are
current (by your CPU's date), and what files are
available from Lookahead Communications, Inc. (again,
according to the date in your CPU). If the files are
current, press ENTER and a batch procedure will then
build a PEG database for you.
When this process is finished, run PEG from the DOS
prompt, and enjoy the world's first and only TV listing
magazine that runs on a computer. Please note that
should you interrupt the PEGBATCH procedure, you will
probably get a corrupt PEG database, and PEG will not
run.
1.4 Authorization File
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
An authorization file (PEG.KEY) is pre-configured at Lookahead
Communications, Inc. to include certain information that you cannot
change. If this information is incorrect, you must contact PEG
customer service. The authorization file contains:
- Your name and address (if registered),
- Your city or metro area prefix,
- Your registered or demo account number,
- Your authorization expiration date.
If your software does not work properly, it may be due to an incorrect
value in one for one of these items.
1.5 Personal Entertainment Guide Procedures
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide consists of three main procedures:
- PEG
View Feature Articles
View Program Listings
Setup And View Folders
Setup And View Personal Listings
- PEGBATCH
Maintains The PEG Database
- PEGPRINT
Format and Print Personal Listings
Typing PEG, PEGBATCH or PEGPRINT from the DOS prompt will initiate
these procedures.
Again, please Note: These commands MUST be run with the Personal
Entertainment Guide as the default directory (e.g. C:\PEG2).
You may wish to set up a .BAT file which takes care of this
automatically.
2. BASIC CONCEPTS
2.1 Weekly Cycle
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
There are two basic parts to The Personal Entertainment Guide.
The first is the PEG program which is used to view program listings,
folder listings, personal listings, feature articles or setup folder
and Personal Listing criteria. To access this program, you type "PEG"
from the DOS prompt, and follow the instructions on the screen. Screen
navigation is handled with function keys that are listed on the bottom
of each screen. At any point, you can press F1 which displays help
information.
Once every one, two or three weeks, depending on what files are on
your disk and your downloading preferences, you must download new
listings. After a successful download and decompression of the new
file(s), you must use the second part of PEG, which is the database
reorganization procedure PEGBATCH. PEGBATCH will ask if you want to
delete any obsolete or inconsistent TV listings files, and then build
a new database with the new information.
The Personal Entertainment Guide week begins 12:00 A.M. Friday
night/Saturday morning and ends 11:55 P.M. Friday night.
Depending on what type of modem you use, a normal week's transmission
of 70 channels will take about 5 minutes at 9600 baud and 20-25
minutes at 2400 baud. The database maintenance and folder
recalculation take another few minutes - depending on how fast your
computer is and how many folders you keep.
There is one other utility provided for your use, namely PEGPRINT.
This utility is used to print a Personal Listing to a file or a
printer. You might want to run PEGPRINT once a week to provide a
hard-copy of your Personal Listings. In this way, you won't have to
go to your computer when you want to view your customized TV listing.
2.2 Time Period Covered
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
You are able to view up to 3 weeks of television listings and feature
articles at a time with the Personal Entertainment Guide.
The Main Title screen lists the first and last day of coverage of the
PEG database.
2.3 Availability Of Listings
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Television listings are available no earlier than SUNDAY at 6:00 PM
for the week that is 2 weeks in the future. Three weeks of files are
maintained at all times on CompuServe's Consumer Electronics Forum
(GO CEFORUM). It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
2.4 Backing Up The System
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
It is not necessary to backup the entire PEG system. If you lose the
PEG program files, they will be available from major BBS's or the PEG
BBS. If you lose the PEG database, you can get these files from the
same sources as the software.
The only files not replaceable are the folder files with the criteria
*you* set up for folders. There are six files, and they are
completely interlocked. They can be accessed as "FOLDERS.*". All
folders files must be backed-up and restored together. For example,
to backup the folder files to a floppy disk, you might type:
copy C:\PEG\FOLDERS.* A:*.*
To restore the folder files, you might type:
copy A:FOLDERS.* C:\PEG\*.*
After restoring the folder files, it is essential to run PEGBATCH
which recalculates the folders based upon the lastest database.
2.5 A Word About Programs And Categories
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Some programs have the same program titles but different program types
and categories, or descriptions. Some examples are:
- L.A. LAW - the movie
- L.A. LAW - the syndicated program
- L.A. LAW - the series
- Dennis The Menace - the movie
- Dennis The Menace - the cartoon show
- Dennis The Menace - the syndicated program
- Tarzan, The Ape Man - the movie starring Bo Derek
- Tarzan, The Ape Man - the movie starring Johnny Weismuller
2.6 Screen Fields
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Screen fields may contain any printable character including letters,
numbers and special symbols. Uppercase and lowercase are maintained
for display purposes only. All processing is case insensitive.
Except for leading and trailing spaces, all other spaces are counted
as part of the value of the field.
You may enter information into fields that are unprotected on the
screen. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored in all cases.
Enclosed spaces are considered part of the field. All enterable
fields are translated to uppercase. Pressing Esc clears the field to
its former entered value if one existed. Pressing Esc again clears
the field to an "unentered" status.
2.7 Database Searches
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
On several screens, you have the ability to search the database for
programs of interest to you. These searches inspect program titles
only, not the channel, program type, category or any part of the
program description. These database searches should not be confused
with folder searches for which different rules apply (see Section 5.
FOLDERS AND PERSONAL LISTINGS). Depending upon which screen you are
using, the searches work in the following ways:
On screens that are chronological in nature (Rolling Log, Electronic
Grid, and Personal Listing) the value entered into the Find field is
compared with all parts of program titles. For example, the search
for the value "LUC" will match "Mr. Lucky" as well as "I Love Lucy".
The spelling and punctuation for that portion of the title that is
entered must be exact. For example, the value
"ZAN, THE"
would match "TARZAN, THE APE MAN", however,
"ZAN THE"
would not because of the missing comma. The search is case
insensitive.
On screens that are alphabetical in nature (Alphabetic Program
Listing, Title Folder Criteria and Folder Contents), the value entered
into the search field is used to advance the listing to the first
program title not less than the search field. The search is case
insensitive.
2.8 Personal Entertainment Guide Directory
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide software is designed to use ONLY the
files in its directory. If you used the recommended directory, that
directory would be C:\PEG2. No software supplied by Lookahead
Communications, Inc. will create a directory, or load files into any
directory other than the Personal Entertainment Guide directory. The
only exception is the PEGSET.COM utility which creates the PEG
directory during disk installation.
Also, no software supplied by Lookahead Communications, Inc. can
access any file not in the Personal Entertainment Guide directory.
2.9 Personal Entertainment Guide Screens
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide screens are standardized. Each
screen contains:
Top Line Of Screen:
- Current Date

There is a set of standard function keys that is available on every
screen. In some cases, in order to save space, the listing of some of
these keys is omitted. Even when not listed, these keys are always
active. Function keys that are unique to a screen are always listed
on the bottom line of the screen.
The standard function keys are:
F1 - Help - displays the appropriate help screen. This key is

PEG has a Trivia / Advertising panel at the bottom of each screen.
This panel contains PEG Trivia, advertising and announcements from
Lookahead Communications, Inc. This panel changes automatically and
does not require intervention. If you wish to repeat a panel or skip
ahead faster than the normal rate, you can use the INS and DEL keys.
When INS is pressed, the next panel is displayed. When DEL is
pressed, the previous panel is displayed.
Whenever you go to the Main Title screen or the Table Of Contents
screen, the Trivia / Advertising Panel sequence is temporarily
interrupted. The system displays the Volume and Issue Number, Cable
Company edition, and range of dates covered by the television listings
database. Upon returning to other PEG screens, the system displays
the Trivia / Advertising panel that was previously in effect.
2.13 The Personal Entertainment Guide Main Title Screen
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The PEG software starts by displaying the Main Title screen. Pressing
any key will display the next screen. The Main Title screen provides
the following information:

4. PROGRAM LISTINGS
4.1 Types Of Program Listings
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide contains complete television program
listings for the period specified on the Main Title screen. These
programs include all movie, program, and sports events. There are
three ways of viewing the complete set of program listings. The first
two ways, the Rolling Log and Electronic Grid, are chronological
listings, that is, each program event is listed in date, time and
channel order. When either of these listings is selected, the
appropriate screen is displayed with the listing "opened to" the
current date and time.
The third way of viewing the complete set of program listings is
Alphabetic By Type / Category. In this case, all of the programs in
the database are listed alphabetically. Sub-sets of the alphabetical
listings can be displayed by choosing specific program types and
categories on the Program Types Menu and Program Categories Menu. If
a particular program is of interest, it can be highlighted with the
cursor, and by pressing ENTER, a chronological list of associated
program events can be displayed (see Program Showing Times screen).
4.2 Rolling Log
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Rolling Log is a listing of program events in chronological order,
grouped by starting time. This listing is similar to a television
magazine program listing.
To view the details associated with a program event listed on this
screen, position the cursor to highlight the program event and press
ENTER. To place a program in one of your favorite title folders,
position the cursor to highlight the program event and press F3.
The screen may be positioned using the Date, Time and Search fields.
To position the screen to a different time or date, enter a new value
in the Time or Date fields and press F7. The Date and Time fields may
be changed individually or together.
To find the next occurrence of a string value in the Rolling Log
listing, enter the value in the Find field and press F8. The system
will place the cursor on the next occurrence of a program title that
in some part matches the value in the Find field. Subsequent pressing
of F8 searches for the next occurrence of the Find field value until
the end of the database is reached.
The information provided on the Rolling Log screen is:
- A heading entitled "Rolling Log For" followed by the day of
week, calendar date and time.
- Page - the number of the page of the program listing within the
date and time displayed.
- Program events with the following information:
- Station / Network Id - the mnemonic of the station or
network, for example: HBO, PPV, WCBS.
- Program Title - the title of the program, movie, or sports
event. If the program event is a movie, the prefix "MOVIE:"
is added to the beginning of the program title. This prefix
is not inspected in searches.
- Category - the program category of the program listed, such
as MUSICAL, PUBLIC AFFAIRS, COMEDY.
- Minutes - the duration of the program expressed in minutes
(rounded to 5 minute intervals).
Up to 8 program events can be displayed on a page of the Rolling Log.
The paging control keys available for this screen are:
PAGE DOWN - positions the screen to the next page of program
events.
PAGE UP - positions the screen to the previous page of program
events.
CTRL-PAGE DOWN - positions the screen to the displayed date and
time plus 24 hours.
CTRL-PAGE UP - positions the screen to the displayed date and time
minus 24 hours.
HOME - positions the screen to the beginning of the displayed
week. If the HOME key is pressed again, the screen is positioned
to the beginning of the previous week. Repeated pressing of the
HOME key positions the screen to the beginning of previous weeks
until the first week of data is reached.
END - positions the screen to the end of the displayed week. If
the END key is pressed again, the screen is positioned to the end
of the next week. Repeated pressing of the END key positions the
screen to future weeks until the last week of data is reached.
CTRL-HOME - positions the screen to the beginning of the first
week of data.
CTRL-END - positions the screen to the end of the last week of
data.
The special function keys available for this screen are:
F3 - Folder - provides the ability to add the highlighted program
to a favorite title folder. The Add To Favorite Folder screen is
displayed. For a description of the Add To Favorite Folder
screen, please refer to Section 5. - FOLDERS AND PERSONAL
LISTINGS.
F7 - Time - positions the screen to the date and time in the Date
and Time fields. The first page of the listing for that date and
time is displayed.
F8 - Find - searches the database for a match of program titles
with the value specified in the Find field.
ENTER - Detail - displays details about the highlighted program
event.
4.3 Electronic Grid
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Electronic Grid screen is a listing of program events showing at a
particular time. This screen is similar to a window of a "grid" found
in television magazines. The window may be scrolled up and down to
view a full range of channels, or right and left to view different
time periods.
This screen is most useful for seeing what is on a given channel at a
particular time. For example, if you turn on the TV and want the
details on a movie on HBO that is in progress, you need only display
the Electronic Grid screen and look at HBO. Even though the movie may
have been on for a period of time, you don't have to search backwards
in the program listing to find it.
Another use of this screen is to check for TV watching or taping
schedule conflicts. For example, if you wanted to tape a particular
movie, you can use the Electronic Grid screen to see if there are
other programs that you might want to view or tape showing at the same
time. If there is a conflict, you can use the the Program Showing
Times screen to see all other times that each of the programs is on,
so that you can plan an optimal taping schedule.
To view the details associated with a program event listed on this
screen, position the cursor to highlight the program event and press
ENTER. To place a program in one of your favorite title folders,
position the cursor to highlight the program and press F3.
The screen may be positioned using the Date, Time and Search fields.
To position the screen to a different time or date, enter a new value
in the Time or Date fields and press F7. The Date and Time fields may
be changed individually or together.
To find the next occurrence of a string value in the Electronic Grid
listing, enter the value in the Find field and press F8. The system
will place the cursor on the next occurrence of the program title (or
any portion of the program title) matching the value in the Find
field. Subsequent pressing of F8 searches for the next occurrence of
the Find field value until the end of the database is reached.
This screen can be displayed in two formats. Pressing F5 toggles
between the two formats. The information common to both formats is:
A heading entitled "Electronic Grid For" followed by the day of
week, calendar date and time.
Page - the number of the page of the program listing within the
date and time displayed.
Program events with the following information:
- Station / Network Id - the mnemonic of the station or
network, for example: HBO, PPV, WCBS.
- Program Title - the title of the program, movie, or sports
event showing on this channel at the displayed date and time.
- The default format consists of:
> Minutes Until - the number of minutes from the displayed
date and time until the time that the next program event
will be shown on this channel.
> Next Program Title - the title of the next program event
that will be shown on this channel.
- The alternate format consists of:
> Begin - the time that the current program started. This
is expressed in hours and minutes followed by AM or PM.
> Elapsed - the number of minutes that have elapsed since
the start of the program. For example, if the displayed
time is 8:30 PM and the program had started at 8:00 PM,
the Elapsed field would contain 30. If the program had
started at 8:05 PM, the Elapsed field would contain 25.
> Next - the number of minutes until the next program
starts. For example, if the displayed time is 8:30 PM
and the next program starts at 9:00 PM, the Next field
would contain 30. If the next program starts at 8:35 PM,
the next field would contain 5.
Up to 8 channels can be displayed on a page of the Electronic Grid
screen.
The paging control keys available for this screen are:
PAGE DOWN - positions the screen to the next page of channels.
PAGE UP - positions the screen to the previous page of channels.
"+" - positions the screen to the next time period (also works with
"=").
"-" - positions the screen to the previous time period (also works
with "_").
CTRL-PAGE DOWN - positions the screen to the displayed channels on
the displayed date and time plus 24 hours.
CTRL-PAGE UP - positions the screen to the displayed channels on
the displayed date and time minus 24 hours.
The Add Title To Favorite Folder
screen is displayed. For a description of the Add To Favorite
Folder screen, please refer to Section 5. - FOLDERS AND PERSONAL
LISTINGS.

5. FOLDERS AND PERSONAL LISTINGS
5.1 Introduction
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
One of the most useful features of the Personal Entertainment Guide is
its ability to maintain a comprehensive database of a subscriber's
television viewing preferences. Using these preferences, the software
is able to pick out programs of interest as well as provide customized
listings. The mechanism for this is the Folder and Personal Listings
functions. There are 14 screens in the Personal Entertainment Guide
that support these functions.
5.2 Folders
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
A folder consists of:
- A user specified name, e.g. "Kevin Costner Movies",
- User specified program search criteria, such as a movie actor or
sports team, referred to as the "criteria" of the folder,
- A list of programs that meet the specified criteria, referred to
as the "contents" of the folder,
- Optionally, a reference to a Personal Listing.
When you first create a folder, the system searches the entire
database to find programs that match the search criteria you specify.
A folder may contain as many programs as fit the search criteria.
Once specified, the folder's contents may be displayed without having
to re-search the database. When a new issue of the Personal
Entertainment Guide is loaded onto your disk, the system recalculates
all of the folders so that they reflect current programs.
There are four types of folders: MOVIE, SPORTS, PROGRAM and TITLE.
The first three types: MOVIE, SPORTS and PROGRAM correspond to the
three types of programs (MOVIE, SPORTS and PROGRAM), and use search
criteria specific to the type of program. MOVIE folders have search
criteria relevant to movies, such as year of release, director, MPAA
rating, etc. SPORTS folders have search criteria such as team and
city. PROGRAM folders have general description criteria.
The fourth type of folder, TITLE, is different, in that it may contain
unrelated programs of any type. The search criteria for a TITLE
folder is a set of program titles. The purpose of the TITLE folder is
to hold programs that can't be categorized in any other way, for
example "PROGRAMS I WANT TO TAPE". TITLE folders are handy for
building folders from other folders, or from any of the listings
screens. For example, if you are going through all of the
science-fiction movies and you see one or more favorites, you can
place those favorites in a folder which might be called "MY FAVORITE
SCI-FI MOVIES" by highlighting the movie, and pressing F3.
There is a maximum of 255 folders permitted. Each folder can hold as
many programs as fit the folder criteria. A folder can be associated
with only one Personal Listing.
5.3 Folder Database Searches
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
When using a MOVIE, SPORTS or PROGRAM type folder to search the
database, the values entered into search fields are matched against
ALL parts of applicable fields contained in the program description.
For example, if the value "DREW" is entered into the actor/actress
field, it would match "Dana Andrews", "Andrew Stevens", and "Drew
Barrymore", etc.
The spelling and punctuation of titles, names and other criteria
fields must have an exact match in the database. For example, the
value
"ZAN, THE" entered in the title search field
would match the title "TARZAN, THE APE MAN", however,
"ZAN THE"
would not because of the missing comma.
In order for a program to be selected in a folder database search, ALL
fields entered must have valid matches. For example, if, in a MOVIE
folder, "PG-13" is entered for MPAA Rating, and "DRAMA" is entered for
category, only movies that are BOTH rated PG-13 and are dramas will be
selected. Search fields not entered do not play a part in the
database search.
Helpful Hint: You should always start with as broad a folder search
as possible, using as little information or as few words as you can.
If the folder search finds more matches than you want, you can go back
to the criteria screen and enter more specific information.
One problem that you might have when searching for an actor/actress is
that some actors/actresses list themselves with different stage names
at different points in their career. For example, the actor "SAM
JONES" is sometimes listed as "SAM J. JONES". Other examples include
the inconsistent use of nicknames such as "BILL" instead of "WILLIAM"
or "BOB" instead of "ROBERT", etc.
If you're not sure how a name or some other search value is spelled or
punctuated, use a part of the name or value as a first cut, for
example "JONES". Once you establish how an name or value is spelled
in the database, use that spelling.
When using a TITLE type folder to search titles, the title of the
program must be spelled COMPLETELY and EXACTLY, including
punctutation. For example, "Tarzan, The Ape Man" and "Car 54, Where
Are You?" must contain proper punctuation.
5.4 Title Folders And Favorite Folders
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
There are two methods provided in the Personal Entertainment Guide for
adding titles to TITLE folders. The first method is to use the Add To
Or Update Title Folder screen. To use this screen, you type the title
of the program you wish to be used as folder search criteria. This is
the only method of entering the title of a program that is not
currently showing. For example, if you are interested in a movie such
as "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS" whose next showing date may not be for 6
months, you would have to use the Add To Or Update Title Folder
screen.
The second method of adding titles to a TITLE folder is to use an
existing program or folder contents listing. The idea behind this is
to allow you to view the Rolling Log screen, the Electronic Grid
screen, the Alphabetic By Type / Category screen or the Folder
Contents screen of any type of folder, choose programs of interest,
and directly add their titles to one or more TITLE folder. In this
way, you can go through listings and make up folders of programs you
want to watch or tape and place them in folders with functional names
such as "FAVORITE SCI-FI MOVIES", "MUSIC PROGRAMS TO TAPE", etc.
To select a program, highlight it on one of the above mentioned
screens with the cursor and press F3. The system will display the
"Add To Favorite Folder" screen. This screen is a menu containing the
names of up to 10 TITLE folders that you can set to any folder names
you want. By selecting a folder name from this menu, you can directly
add the desired title to the TITLE folder. Because this menu of TITLE
folders can list only 10 names, the TITLE folders listed on this
screen are called "Favorite Title Folders" or "Favorite Folders". Any
TITLE folder can be a favorite folder. Other than their presence on
this screen, there is no difference between Favorite Title Folders and
ordinary Title Folders.
5.5 Personal Listings
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
A Personal Listing is a chronological listing of program events
associated with one or more folders with a specific Personal Listing
name. Its format and functions are the same as the Rolling Log
screen. The relationship between programs, folders and Personal
Listings is setup by the user in the folder. There is a field for
every type of folder called "Personal Listing Id". This name is the
cross-reference between folders and Personal Listings, and the link
between different folders for a family member. When you display a
Personal Listing, you are actually displaying the combination of all
programs selected by all folders referring to the Personal Listing.
Personal Listings may be combinations of any type of folder, and as
many folders as you like - even all of the folders.
5.6 Folders And Personal Listings Menu
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Folders And Personal Listings Menu is used to access folder and
Personal Listing functions. To select a function, either highlight
the function with the cursor and press ENTER, or press the number or
letter key (not the function key) associated with the function.
The functions available from this screen are:
View Personal Listings - Press 1 - displays the Personal Listings
Menu screen.
View or Modify Folders - Press 2 - displays a list of the folders

The Folder List screen displays folders in alphabetical order. It can
be paged forward or backward. To skip to a particular folder, enter
the beginning letters in the Search field and press F8. Folder
contents can be displayed by highlighting a folder with the cursor and
pressing ENTER. Folder criteria can be displayed by highlighting a
folder with the cursor and pressing F5. The screen displayed for
folder criteria is dependent on the type of folder selected.
To update a MOVIE, SPORTS or PROGRAM folder, use the "Criteria"
function (F5). When the appropriate folder criteria screen is
displayed, you can make updates and recalculate the folder.
There are two functions provided for updating TITLE folders. In
either case, a folder must be highlighted with cursor. To add a title
to the folder or update the Personal Listing cross-reference name in
the folder, use the "Add To" function (F3). This will display the Add
To Or Update Title Folder screen, from which the title folder can be

The Personal Listing is a listing of program events in chronological
order, grouped by starting time. These program events are associated
with the combined contents of all folders that cross-reference the
Personal Listing name.
The functioning of this screen is the same as the Rolling Log listing
with the exception that the heading is entitled "Personal Listing
(XXXXXXXX) For" followed by the day of week, calendar date and time.
The "XXXXXXXX" represents the Personal Listing name. Please refer to
the Rolling Log screen for details on how to operate this screen.
6. FILE MAINTENANCE
6.1 Introduction
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide requires new information
downloaded from the source of PEG Weekly Update Files and
integrated into the database on your PC at least once every three
weeks. You can get updates as often as once per week. The
procedure for accomplishing this is called "PEGBATCH".
6.2 The PEGBATCH Procedure
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The PEGBATCH procedure is run whenever you add or delete a PEG
Weekly Update File, or restore the folder files. To start the
procedure, type PEGBATCH at the DOS prompt.
You may interrupt PEGBATCH at any point during the process by pressing
Ctrl-C. Please note that once you have allowed PEGBATCH to begin the
database reorganization process, pressing Ctrl-C almost guarantees a
corrupt database, and you won't be able to run PEG until you run
PEGBATCH start to finish.
When you start PEGBATCH, the following steps are executed:
Step 1
------
The details of your authorization file are displayed which include:
- if this is a registered copy, your name and address,
- if this is an un-registered copy, the caption "DEMO"
- your account number, or a demo account number,
- the PEG file prefix which you are authorized to decode.
Each city or cable system will be assigned a PEG file prefix (see
PEG File name conventions in Appendix C). You are only able to
decode PEG update files which begin with that file prefix.
If your authorization has expired or is invalid, the PEGBATCH will
stop with an error message and you will not get to this screen. If
you want to exit from PEGBATCH, press Ctrl-C, otherwise press ENTER.
Step 2
------
The PEGBATCH procedure checks the PEG directory for incorrect file
names (internally, the program executes "DIR *.PEG"). If any are
found, the program will ask you if you want to delete them. If you
answer "N" for no, PEGBATCH cannot proceed and you will be returned to
the DOS prompt. If you answer "Y" for yes, then PEGBATCH will delete
all *.PEG files that don't conform to the .PEG file name standard. If
you want to exit at this point, you can press Ctrl-C at any point.
PEGBATCH will keep asking you to delete files until there are no
inconsistant file prefixes, at which point PEGBATCH will proceed to
the next step.
Step 3
------
The directory is checked again for inconsistant file prefixes. You
cannot mix different listing files from different cities. If found,
the program will ask you if you want to delete the inconsistant files.
If you answer "N" for no, PEGBATCH cannot proceed and you will be
returned to the DOS prompt. If you answer "Y" for yes, then PEGBATCH
will prompt you file by file for permission to delete. If you want to
exit at this point, you can press Ctrl-C at any point. PEGBATCH will
keep asking you to delete files until there are no inconsistant file
prefixes, at which point PEGBATCH will proceed to the next step.
Step 4
------
The PEGBATCH procedure checks the PEG directory for more than 3 *.PEG
files. If any are found, the program will ask you if you want to
delete them. If you answer "N" for no, PEGBATCH *can* proceed and
will use only the three most recent files, as determined by the file
name (each file has a 3 digit number representing what week the file
contains listings for). If you answer "Y" for yes, then PEGBATCH will
delete all of the extra files and continue to the next step. If you
want to exit at this point, you can press Ctrl-C. If you want
to proceed, press ENTER.
Step 5
------
PEGBATCH will then execute 4 to 5 programs which reorganize the PEG
Database. You can interrupt after this point by pressing Ctrl-C, but
if you do, you are almost guaranteed a corrupt database and PEG cannot
run.
7. PRINTING PERSONAL LISTINGS (PEGPRINT)
7.1 Introduction
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The Personal Entertainment Guide provides a method for formatting and
printing a hard-copy version of any Personal Listing. The format is a
compressed version of the Personal Listing screen. The hard-copy
listing is designed to be printed once per week and placed besides
your television(s) for easy and immediate reference. An example of a
hard-copy listing is given in Appendix B.
7.2 The PEGPRINT Utility
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
The program responsible for formatting the hard-copy version of the
Personal Listing is PEGPRINT. To start this utility, type "PEGPRINT"
from the DOS prompt. If you don't enter any parameters, the PEGPRINT
program will ask for a Personal Listing name, and a destination. The
Personal Listing name can be any valid Personal Listing name - even
one not referenced on the Personal Listing Menu. The default
destination is LPT1: which is the name of your first printer. To
select the default destination, press ENTER, or you can enter either
another device name, or the name of a file. If a file name is
entered, PEGPRINT will create a standard DOS ASCII file.
If you wish, you can enter the Personal Listing name and the
destination on the DOS command line. This is handy if you want to
place the PEGPRINT command in a .BAT file. The format is:
PEGPRINT "Personal Listing Name" "Destination"
For example:
PEGPRINT MY_FAVS MY_FAVS.LST
PEGPRINT JOESLIST LPT2:
