PC YEARBOOK

Version 2.0

Copyright October 1984

by

PC YEARBOOK Version 2.0 is an enhanced version of a calendar
/appointment schedule program written in C using the De Smet C
Compiler. PC Yearbook turns the PC into an electronic appointment
book. Appointments can be scheduled from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm in half-
hour increments. There is also a Note Pad to record other information.

Version 2.0 adds a number of features to the program. The
enhancements include a new section to provide time-related
functions such as reset date, reset time, alarm features and
chimes. Additionally, I have added search capability to the
calendar functions. The use of the function keys has changed. The
current version is much faster than previous versions. I have also
corrected a number of minor bugs and standardized function key
usage.

Like any program of this type, it is never finished. There is
always a better way to accomplish a task or a new function to
add. The value of the program is whether it is useful or not. I
would really like to hear from people who use the program. Many
of the enhancements resulted from user comments. What would you
like to see added ? What don't you like ?

The program as been tested on a PC with 256K and a Zenth 150 with
320K, color monitor, and with DOS 1.1, 2.0,and 2.1. I no longer have
access to a PC with 64K. The program may run on a 64K PC with DOS 1.1
but may not run under 2.0 due to the operating system overhead. I have
not tested the program on a monochrome display except very briefly but
the program makes no use of special color commands and should have no
difficulity with the monochrome display.

You are encouraged to copy and distribute this program. If you
distribute copies, please include both the EXE and DOC files. If
you find this program useful, a contribution of $15 would be
appreaciated. I am especially interested in suggested
improvements, bugs, comments, etc. These may be mailed to:

Running the program:

Before running PC Yearbook, you should copy the program onto a system
disk containing COMMAND.COM. This is necessary as several of the date
functions call portions of COMMAND.COM and will not operate correctly
without the program. You should make sure you have the correct time
and date in the system. While you do not need to have the correct
system date and time when the program is booted, it is a good practice
to enter the correct time and date when you first start your system.
Additionally, it will save several key strokes once the program is
loaded as the program utliizes that date and time to display the
initial calendar and clock. The program also uses the initial system
date to read the correct appointment data file.

To run the program, type PCYRBK20 and press .

PCYRBK20 checks the default drive, usually Drive A, for the current
appointment schedule based on the system date and also loads the
Notepad file. It will then clear the screen and display the title
page. Pressing any key will clear the screen and display the current
calendar.

Main Menu:

The Main Menu will display the calendar for the current month with the
date highlighted in reverse video. On the right side of the screen is
a box labeled TODAY. This box will always display the current date and
time based on the system clock. Below the current calendar and TODAY
box will be displayed the current page of the appointment book. When
the program is first run, the date above the appointment book and the
day displayed in the TODAY box will be identical. Below the
appointment schedule are the function and other keys available from
the current menu.

From the Main Menu, the following options are available.

Calendar functions
Note Pad functions
Time Functions
Print Calendar
Quit

MAIN MENU - Calendar Function:

Each time the PC YEARBOOK is run, it will dispaly a calendar of the
month contained in the system dateand the time. Thus if you initialize
the program and have entered a date of 04-23-84, a calendar for April
1984 will be displayed at the top left of the screen with the 23rd
highlighted in reverse video. The date will also be printed to the
right of the calendar in the box labeled TODAY as Monday April 23,
1984 with the current time as read from the system clock. The
appointment times and current appointments for April 23rd will be
displayed below the calendar and a lightbar will indicate the first
appointment at 8:00 am.

The keys used to manipulate the calendar are:

keys are used to move the highlighted day on the calendar.
The Right/Left arrow keys move the date one day. The Up/Down
arrow keys move to the same day in the previous or next week.
The appointment schedule will be updated as the date is moved.

LAST MONTH - displays the month previous to the month
currently displayed. All appointment data from the currently
displayed month will be saved to disk and the data from the
previous month (if any) will be loaded into memory from disk.

NEXT MONTH - displays the next month after the month
currently displayed. All appointment data from the currently
displayed month will be saved to disk and the data from the
previous month (if any) will be loaded into memory from disk.

TODAY - will display the month and highlight the day/date
that first appeared when the program was run during the
current session. This allows you to return to the current
date from any other month. All appointment data from the
currently displayed month will be saved to disk and the data
from the previous month (if any) will be loaded into memory
from disk.

? MONTH - will display the appointment schedule for any
month. The program will ask for a specific month and year in
the format MM-YY. You should enter the specific month and
year of the appointment schedule you wish to see. For
example, if you wished to view the month of October 1984, you
would enter 10-84 when prompted by the question "Schedule
for which month ? (MM-YY) " The schedule for the current
month will be saved to disk and the schedule for October 1984
(if any) will be loaded into memory.

PC YEARBOOK 2.0 Page 4.

SEARCH - allows you to search for a specific string within
the appointment schedule for the current month. The search
string can be from one to 32 characters in length. If a match
is found the schedule for that day is displayed and the
matching string will blink. You then have the option of
continuing the search for other matches or cancelling the
search at that point. When the search is completed or no
match is found, the program will return to the current day
and redisplay the appointment schedule for that day.

MENU - Quit the calendar functions and return to the Main
Menu.

Appointment Schedule Function: (Part of the Calendar menu)

The appointment schedule allows appointments from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm
for each day. Each appointment may be up to 32 characters of text and
is active whenever the calendar is displayed.

to the next appointment. The highlighted bar indicates the
current cursor position for adding or deleting an appointment.

INSERT (AN APPOINTMENT) - opens an appointment time at the
current position of the highlighted bar for input of
appointment text. The text is limited to a maximum of 32
characters. If you use all 32 characters, the program will
generate an automatic carriage return and will turn off the

Appointment Data Files:

Appointment data is stored on the disk in the default drive. A file is
created for each month using the naming format of MMMYYAPT.DAT with the
first three characters being the first three in the name of the month and
the next two the last two digits of the year. Thus data for April 1984
would be stored in a file named APR84APT.DAT.

The amount of disk space required to store a month's data is dependent
upon the number of appointments scheduled. The maximum size is about 23K
which would represent an appointment scheduled for each half-hour for the
entire month. A 320K diskette should have no problems containing an
entire year of data.

MAIN MENU - Note Pad Function:

The Note Pad provides four pages of fifteen lines to store notes and
other textual information that you do not wish to put on the appointment
schedule. Each line can be up to 70 characters long.

The Note Pad is always resident and available. It is not date dependent.

The keys to use the Note Pad function are:

LAST PAGE - displays the previous page in the Note Pad. If
you are on page 1, it will wrap around to page 4.

NEXT PAGE - displays the next page in the Note Pad. If you
are on page 4, it will wrap around to page 1.

MOVE BAR - moves the lighlighted bar on the Note Pad. It
indicates the cursor position for adding or deleting a note.

ADD NOTE - opens a Note Pad line at the current position of
the highlighted bar for input of note text. The text is
limited to a maximum of 70 characters. If you use all 70
characters, the program will generate an automatic carriage
return and will turn off the cursor otherwise you must press
to terminate the entry of the text.

DELETE NOTE - deletes a line of text on the Note Pad at the
current position of the highlighted bar.

PC YEARBOOK 2.0 Page 6.

END NOTE - terminates the entry of Note Pad text if the text
is less than 70 characters.

or the left arrow key will delete the previous character
of text during entry of Note Pad text.

QUIT - exits the Note Pad and returns to the Main Menu.

PRINT NOTES - printouts out the Note Pad. On the printout,
the notes are printed from 1 to 60 without page indications
as they are displayed on the screen.

MAIN MENU - Time Functions:

The time functions provide you access to five time-related features
which you may use to enhance the usefulness of PC YEARBOOK 2.0.

RESET DATE - This function allows you to reset the current
system date. This function calls the Date function in DOS and
the input is the same.

specific time for an alarm for all appointments. For example,
if you select 10 minutes before then an alarm will beep for
all appointments on the current day at 10 minutes before the
time the appointment is scheduled. If you type 'N', the

and 15 for that appointment. If you type 'N', the next
appointment will blink and the question repeated. You will be
able to set an individual alarm for all apointments currently
scheduled for the current day.

MENU - Returns to the Main Menu.

MAIN MENU - Print Calendar:

month of an appointment schedule. When this function is selected, the
days of the current schedule month are displayed over the appointment
schedule in three columns. Use the to move the cursor.
Pressing will select the day indicated by the cursor for
printing. A small graphic block will appear in place of the cursor
indicating that that day has been selected, pressing will
erase the selection. Pressing the on a day will not alter a
selection. When all selections have been made, press to printout
