PAGEME VERSION D1.0

INTRODUCTION

PAGEME is a PAGING/CALL NOTIFICATION system that may be used
in conjunction with, or without a commercial pager (beeper).
PAGEME will determine that a call has been answered by an
answering machine. It will then either call a commercial paging
system or call you at another number to notify you that a message
has been left on your answering machine. It is intended for use
by persons desiring notification that they have received a call
or calls on their answering machine. PAGEME is useful to
consultants, salesmen/women and others that use an answering
machine when they are away from their home or office. Since you
will know within minutes that someone is trying to reach you,
your clients and callers will no longer have to wait forever for
you to return an important call.

THEORY OF OPERATION

PAGEME works by detecting the ring signal of your telephone
just like your answering machine does. It then waits a specified
period of time and then dials a telephone number designated by
the user. This telephone number may be associated with a
commercial paging system or it may merely be a second phone
number at which you can be reached. PAGEME will then wait for
the other phone to answer and dial a return code/phone number.
If you are using a pager, your paging system will be activated
just as if someone had called the pager themselves. If you are
using PAGEME to call another telephone number where you can be
reached, the multi-frequency touch tones of the return
code/phone number that you selected will inform you that someone
has called your answering machine.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to your PC, PAGEME requires the following for proper
operation:

1. A 1200 or 2400 baud auto-dial modem utilizing the
industry standard `AT' command set.

2. An answering machine connected to the same line as the
modem/computer.

RUNNING PAGEME VERSION D1.0

HARDWARE SET-UP:

The only hardware set-up required for PAGEME Version D1.0 is
that the modem/computer and answering machine must be connected
to the same telephone line.

START-UP:

PAGEME Version D1.0 is extremely simple to use. The program
is invoked by typing:

PAGEME

at the DOS prompt. The opening title screen will then appear
followed shortly thereafter by the program screen.

Telephone Number -

The cursor will initially be positioned under the first
asterisk following `Telephone Number:'. You may then enter the
telephone number of your pager or the telephone number at which
you want PAGEME to call you. As soon as the last digit is
entered the cursor will move to the asterisk next to `Pager End
Code:'. If you make a mistake when entering the telephone number
you can press the backspace key until the last digit is entered.
Once the last digit is depressed the cursor moves to the next
line and you must exit and rerun the program in order to enter
the correct number. The registered version allows you to move
between input fields. It also supports saving of Set-Up
parameters.

Pager End Code -

The Pager End Code is used by many commercial paging systems
to signal the end of the Call Return Number. When the paging
system receives this code it initiates the paging sequence. You
should enter the correct Pager End Code for your particular
system. If your system does not use an End Code or you are not
using a pager, you should enter a space.

PAGE 6

PAGEME VERSION D1.0

Call Return Code -

The Call Return Code is not user-selectable in PAGEME Version
D1.0. When PAGEME detects a call it will dial this code and your
Call Return Number to the paging system. When your display pager
alerts you of a call it will show this code and the Call Return
Number. The registered version provides a user-selectable Call
Return Code.

Call Return Number -

The Call Return Number is simply the telephone number that you
select which is sent to the pager when a call is detected. I
usually use my office phone number. When I get paged and the
pager displays the Call Return Code followed by my office
telephone number, I know that I have received a call on my
answering machine.

Alarm Code -

The Alarm Code is similar to the Call Detected Code. It is

sent by PAGEME along with the Call Return Number to designate
that one of the user-selectable Alarm Times have been reached.

Alarm Times -

There are two Alarm Times that are selectable by the user.
The Alarm Times must be entered in the following format:

HH:MM

where: HH = Hour
MM = Minutes

A 24 hour clock is used so 5:00 PM must be entered as 17:00.
Leading and trailing zeros are significant and must be entered so
5:00 AM must be entered as 05:00. The colon ` : ' is provided by
PAGEME and does not need to be entered by the user. Alarm Times
must be entered in PAGEME Version D1.0. If you do not want to
set an Alarm Time, set the Alarm Time(s) equal to 23:59 or some
other time that will not be reached before you get back to the
office. The registered version allows you to set and disable
multiple alarms. PAGEME Version D1.0 only supports two (2) Alarm
Times.

PAGE 7

PAGEME VERSION D1.0

Pager Dialing Delay -

The Pager Dialing Delay is the time in seconds that PAGEME
waits from the time it detects a call until the time it dials
your pager or other designated telephone number. The Pager
Dialing Delay is fixed at 180 seconds (3 minutes) in PAGEME
Version D1.0 but is user-selectable in the registered version.

Return Number Dialing Delay -

The Return Number Dialing Delay is the time in seconds that
PAGEME waits after it dials your pager/telephone number until it
dials the Call Return Code and Call Return Numbers. This number
must be entered and must be between 0 and 99 inclusive. The
leading zero is significant and must be included so 9 seconds
must be entered as 09.

COM Port -

The COM Port is the communication port number assigned to your
modem. It must be entered and must be either 1 or 2.

Baud Rate -

The Baud Rate is the communications speed of the COM port and
modem. PAGEME currently supports 300, 1200 and 2400 baud
communication speeds. If the 300 baud option is selected it must
be entered as `0300' with the leading zero.

PAGE 8

PAGEME VERSION D1.0

PROGRAM OPERATION

After the Baud Rate has been entered PAGEME will initialize
the modem and wait for a call. When a call has been detected a
window will " pop " onto the right-hand side of the screen and
log the date and time of the call. PAGEME Version D1.0 will then
countdown from the Pager Dialing Delay to zero and then dial the
pager/telephone number. PAGEME Version D1.0 will then wait for
the time specified by the Return Number Dialing Delay and dial
the Call Detected Code/Call Return Number combination.

PAGEME also monitors the time of day. When the time of day
reaches any of the user-specified Alarm Times, PAGEME will dial
the pager/telephone number, wait the number of seconds specified
by the Return Number Dialing Delay and then dial the Alarm
Code/Call Return Number combination.

PAGEME Version D1.0 can be exited while waiting for a call by
pressing the ESCAPE ` Esc ' key.

HINTS

When determining how long you should make the Return Number
Dialing Delay, it is suggested that you monitor the progress of
the PAGEME dialing sequence and time how many seconds you need
for your paging system to answer. Then experiment with values
around this number until you find a reliable Delay time.

The Alarm feature can be used as a call detection/pager
activation test mode by setting one of the Alarm Times to a time
earlier than the current time. PAGEME will then immediately
enter ALARM mode after it initializes the modem. By doing this
you can be sure that your modem is working properly.

TROUBLESHOOTING

PAGEME Version D1.0 has fundamental error detection programmed
into it. However, because of the wide variety of computers and
modems in use, PAGEME may not work with all combinations of
equipment.

If PAGEME Version D1.0 does not work with your particular
equipment try referencing the following Troubleshooting Guide.

1. Make sure that your modem, computer and answering machine
are connected correctly. The modem must be set up for the COM
port that you are telling PAGEME Version D1.0 to use. The
answering machine must be connected to the same telephone line as
your modem.

2. Make sure that your answering machine rings one complete
cycle before answering. This way PAGEME Version D1.0 will be
able to detect the ` RING ' signal.

3. Make sure that you do not have too many telecommunication
devices connected to the same telephone line. Sometimes when
too many phones, etc. are connected to the same line, the line
voltage drops below that required for your modem to sense a
` RING '.

4. Try turning your computer and modem completely off,
waiting a few minutes, and then restarting them. Sometimes
other software change or interfere with the programmable modem
and communication port parameters and do not reset them properly.

5. Try removing memory resident programs. Sometimes they
interfere with the proper operation of other programs.

If after trying these methods PAGEME Version D1.0 still does not
work, please write to me at the address given in the CUSTOMER
SERVICE section. Please include your name, mailing address,
telephone number, best time to call and a description of the
problem. I will try to determine the reason for the problem and
provide a remedy.
